    LOVE THIS AMP! I ditched all of my effects pedals off my board because this does everything I need. The effects are very usable. I had the grandmeister 40 when it came out and it got buried in the live mix. This thing sticks out perfectly in a mix. It hits hard. Super versatile too. Goes from super happy to ultra PISSED with whatever effects with the tap of 1 button. No more tap dancing on my pedalboard live!

    Played already 3 death metal gigs with it. Fantastic sound and convenient as fug. People liked the sound very much. Only downside is the build-in gate. I used an isp decimator g string. This thing compliments the Ironball fantastically good and last time plus an orange pedal baby via send, since there were 2 4x12. Ironball is flexible by any means.

      @Schizmatizmify Před 2 lety

      This is something I've noticed with the gear demos of this amp. Not so much that there's too much mid or treble, but that there's not enough bass. I think that generally flies because us metal guys are always trying to 'tame the low end' in one way or another, but when you stack it up against the Fireball 25 or Invective MH (or just a bigger amp) it sounds a tad anemic. I find a good low-end adds a lot of dynamics and texture to a tone. You get more of the fundamental, too - people can actually tell what notes you're playing. In my experience this is easier to take out where there's too much, than to add back in where there isn't enough out of the box.

    • @rubievale
      @rubievale Před 2 lety +2

      My main gigging/touring rig is a rack mounted Boogie Triaxis into a valve power amp. I used to use a 50+50w Marshall EL34 power amp but it weighs a lot, like a hell of a lot, and I got fed up with lifting something that weighed several stone. I brought a mono 6L6 power amp that switches from 50w down to 20w and the 20w is absolutely capable of being used with a live drummer. In fact there's very little difference between 50w and 20w in terms of perceived volume. It's loud enough to take your head off so while I haven't played the Engl I can state that in my experience 20w is well up to the job. I use a 2x12 custom built Matamp cab and most people underestimate how much of an impact on your tone a cabinet can have. Not every 20w amp is the same in terms of volume though but I reckon it'd be grand for a full band rehearsal.

    • @TriInfinity
      @TriInfinity Před 2 lety

      @@rubievale thanks for the info. I also have a tube Poweramp (that rack mount engl one) with 2x20 watts, there I go out in stereo to the 4x12 cab because I never could get the real cut through with only 1x20w... The interesting part here is, that you could even if it may lack a bit volume vice, you could still go direct into the PA at rehearsal and be heard through that as well... Or your own monitoring system, in ears etc.... The Engl mini version is only 8 kg, which is fine for a complete rack. I hate the weight of my AxeFx plus the Engl Rack Tube Poweramp sooo unnecessary 🪨.

      @daniloberserk Před 2 lety +1

      Legit question... If a modeler is "good enough" already, would you care about updates anyway?
      A good modeler doesn't get "outdated" either. And will probably last forever without maintenance.

    • @Escapism7133
      @Escapism7133 Před 2 lety +1

      @@daniloberserk All electronics can potentially fail. Sure there's routine maintenance on tube amps but if a modeler gets fried then I guarantee most amp repair shops won't help you and if it's out of warranty then the manufacturer won't help either. You can find tube amps that can be serviced back to life even from the 30s/40s, whereas a lot of digital gear gets tossed in the garbage. That being said, this Engl Ironball SE probably isn't fun for amp techs to work on due to it having digital components inside and it being a cramped chassis. If reliability is what you're after a modeler is great but it's hard to beat a simple tube amp as far as longevity.

    • @daniloberserk
      @daniloberserk Před 2 lety

      @@Escapism7133 Oh, I'm sure that most repair shops wouldn't bother to fix an amp modeler. But they're not even close price wise to be a comparison to start with. And I'm pretty sure they're extremely reliable, I mean, it's still easy to buy an Zoom 505 nowadays.
      Not sure where you got the info about a ton of digital gear getting tossed out though.
      -
      What I'm saying is that isn't a strict "rule" that makes digital gear obsolete. It's just the consumerism of guitarists talking.
      Personally, I don't understand the existence of extremely expensive modelers like kemper or axe-fx. So for units like these, I personally would just get an real amp instead.
      Sure, no "good amp" gets outdated. In fact, most of then get more valuable over time (like what happens with dual rect revisions). But the "fixation" toward tube amps is mostly an psychological phenomena then anything else nowadays.
      I mean, an hotone ampero one costs 300 bucks and doesn't sound worse then an axe fx, and mostly important, it can import IRs.
      You'll still need an good power amp + good cabs or some FRFR solution. Fortunately, it's very cheap to make or buy an Class D solution with tons of watts. The "power amp" distortion can be modeled and having enough headroom in a class D is everything you need at that point to sound exactly like an cranked tube amp (if you like that type of sound), ss amp, or whatever you need.
      ---
      I'm not saying that tube amps aren't important and must die. But it bothers me how many people think they NEED an tube amp, or even an SS amp to sound good or professional, or any expensive gear. Even free plugins from years ago (like Lepou stuff) doesn't sound "outdated" by any means.

      @@daniloberserk They all have one thing in common, they're tools for musicians. I don't think any one category of gear is better than another, they're all just a means to amplify or record your guitar and whichever you prefer is what is best for you.
      I'm merely pointing out that a tube amp with a simple circuit will continue to run as long as someone is willing to work on it because the parts were made to be replaced and fixed. To reiterate, not all tube amps are created equal and many are not designed to be easily repaired (ironically most of those would be amps that incorporate more digital components or use manufacturing techniques that cut production costs such as PCBs).
      However, the vast majority of digital gear is not designed to be easily repaired at all (not that some techs can't). The components are often small and not modular (meaning you have to replace a large chunk of the equipment if something goes wrong - if it's salvageable at all).
      What do you think happens to modern TV's or stereos when they have an issue? Most of them go in the garbage. Tube TV and stereo/radio repair was a decent business for techs before digital flat-screen TV's were around. This goes for the vast majority of digital equipment of various industries. Most of the time it makes more sense to replace the item entirely than to pay to have it fixed.

      @@Escapism7133 I 100% agree. But the main argument was modelers getting "outdated". Most people think that you must buy the new "hot "modeler" every year and this is just wrong.
      But price tag and "value" is something very strange when talking about music gear. People get very emotional about that sometimes, to the point of entering in denial about the science behind this techs and psychoacoustics.
      Talking about tone specifically, no one sounds necessarily better or worse. In fact, sometimes in music you may like something "technically" worse. It's an artistic representation after all... Most modern metal sounds "expensive" production wise, but very generic. Is this a good thing? I can't answer.
      Talking strictly about modeling technology and matching the tone of a real gear, it's a fact that nowadays we already have technology for that. I mean... Some people still think an Klon Centaur costing 8000 USD would sound "better" then any 50 USD clone that you can buy. As I said, it's an psychological phenomena.
      The fact is, it doesn't. BUT you might have an inspiration playing with something like an original Klon Centaur and knowing it's history.
      ---
      TL/DR: Tone wise, probably any modern gear is "good enough", and you don't need to be rich to have an "expensive sound". But to create music and get inspiration is another thing. No piece of gear can do anything without an artist after all. Most praised gear started to be "legendary" specially because musicians created classics with then.

    That's cringe right there. Damn Germans... Using outdated British English for the international market or in general. C'mon Engl, you should know better. But then again, they're Germans, so they don't...
