Redfin Perch fishing tips, tricks and pointers on a quiet July day

  • Perch, or redfin as we know them in Australia due to the fact that we have so many native species of perch, are a popular species of fish in many countries around the world where they are embraced by fisherman just about everywhere.
    Whether it is the juicy white flesh, the fighting abilities or just the fact that they are such a fun fish to catch I am not sure, but for whatever reason, redfin Perch are just a loved fish.
    Today I went out chasing redfin perch in the middle of July. I knew before I even left that I would have a battle on my hands just finding a fish that would be on the bite enough to even contemplate taking my lure. I was dead right! I found one redfin perch that followed my lure in and had a few swipes at it, but that was it. That was my end result!
    Anyhow, it is called fishing and not catching for a reason...because we do not always catch and attempting to catch a redfin perch at the coldest time of the year was always going to be a big ask.
    I hope you find this video informative and entertaining, and I hope you find my tips useful.
    Thank you for watching.

    I don't live in Vic, I live in NSW, however I live in a colder area and I catch many Redfin. To target a fish with a certain lure, you find out what it's typically eating, to replicate that. The Redfin is not a large fish, the Redfin mostly preys on the yabby and large aquatic insects. Large aquatic insects typically move through mid levels of the water far more often than the yabby, so I pick a lure that is more insect in what it seems like. I only ever had moderate success catching Redfin until I switched to a spinner lure, the spinner lure is like a small shaft that can be coloured, and then a piece of shiny metal that spins around it while it's pulled through the water, it resembles what could be a large aquatic insect making it's way through the water.
    Once I use these, I have caught hundreds of Redfin, the Redfin is easy to catch once I used this lure.
    In the same river I catch these, I have never hooked a common carp if I use a spinner, because it doesn't replicate what the carp would eat.
    I never used to catch carp, until I looked at Malcolm Douglas catch and cook one, explaining that it actually does have good meat, and has gotten a bad reputation mostly based on myth here in Australia. Indeed I have caught carp and it's tasty meat, better then Redfin.
    But as I said, different methods have to be used. I notice the carp commonly exist in groups, and aren't very far underwater, often you can see a bunch of them from the surface of the water. As a result I realised how easy it is to target and catch them. The carp has a small mouth compared to it's body, so a small hook should be used. One way to catch them is to use a floater, then around only 5cm of line under that, with a tiny sinker, a small hook and some live insect stabbed onto the hook. With this method I have caught many carp easily.

    The first fish that I caught on a plastic, I watched the whole thing from a jetty.
    It was a small Flathead who followed my lure but wouldn't take it.
    I stopped the lure and he stopped, and he looked like he was getting sick of following.
    I let the plastic sit on the bottom with the fish looking at the lure.
    I gave the plastic literally the tiniest twitch to barely move.
    The Flathead ate it.

    I fished for redfin in ponds along the Light River in South Australia and I always used a small lure that looks exactly like a yabby. It moved backwards and dangles two small trebles below. It is dark green so it just looks like a yabby. I found this would out fish any other lure every time anywhere.

Americans are spoiled for freshwater fish over there and the Bass will eat any lure presented to them from what I've seen. There is decent largemouth in every pond, swamp and drain. • @Preirin

    .... I love dad puns, but that one was baaad LOL
    That retrieve... I've always called it a 'twitch', but whatever it's called, it works in enticing slow-to-strike fish. But still, as you know, you can bring the lure in front of a fish 5-6x without a strike, then finally BOOM!
    What are your thoughts on surface poppers in cooler waters for Reddies?

  • @yep.fishing
    @yep.fishing Před rokem

    4:08 If I may make a suggestion to others. If you find you need to upsize your jighead for casting distance then you really should be casting with a rod with a lower casting weight. Heavier jigheads for the sake of casting will just mean the lure isn't in the strike zone as much.

    • @robbiefishing
      @robbiefishing  Před 7 lety +1

      G'day mate, in water with low clarity I prefer to use brightly coloured lures, preferably with a rattle. I also only like to fish dirty water if it is alwats dirty. I find that when a clear waterway becomes dirty the fish often go off the bits until it settled, but if the waterway is always dirty that is fine. Small lipless crankbaits can work well in dirty water.
