Hey Warren, In the past I've rotated between Limiter into Compressor or Compressor into Limiter, Sounds here that you like that ladder. I know both have their merit, but how would you decide when to order these ?
We just tried it with our new Rode NT1 for the mic test and we both agreed it is the best vocal sound we've gotten out of our home studio! Thanks, Warren!
Analog obsession make really great free emulations of these. I know the channev, britpre and britchannel are neve eqs, the FETish is an 1176, and the dbcomp is the dbx 160.
We use Neve 1073’s for Mic Pre’s as well, usually a pair, as we use two Vocal Mics at the same time (right next to each other). For Limit & Compression we first hit a Tube Tech SMC2B Multi-Band Stereo Compressor/Limiter, and sometimes dual 1176LN Black Face behind the SMC2B. Mics in most cases are a Telefunken Elam 251 & AKG C12A or a AKG 414EB w/C12 Capsule.🎤 The Multiband is Trick! 🎯
Thats actually pretty crazy for me. There isn’t a single tube going through. Of course the tube is not a must but a fet condenser going through the transistor pre and then into a vca into another fet compressor is just too much for me 😅. Im definitely using a tube mic for this chain.
I really like to use a 610 preamp into an 1176, deess a bit there. Then I focus the lead vocal into 2 separate busses, one for chorus and one for verse vocals, my chorus vocals are chained to 3 compressors and verse vocals are each chained into the other 2 compressors. I like to use something to bring clarity to the verse and attitude to the chorus, after this it goes through another deeser(I like the sonnox supresser), and from there it goes straight to the stereo buss
@@agesonjohanesburg2915 actually yes there is eq, right after the 1176, I have a Curve Bender with some very sparing settings, nothing too drastic, I love the warmth of the curve Bender and that "live rock band" feel of letting the singers voice have a long leash. Sometimes, if there's an annoying pitch, I actually use the eventide spliteq (what a fantastic plugin btw), it really gives you control without a heavy handed push.
I’m using a wa8000 into a GoldenAge 1073 the Premier edition--> Antelope Audio Zen Go interface. Then I use the DSP plugins so I can have effects on my voice in real time with no latency the effects I use are de-esser, a transparent parametric EQ, then a pultec style EQ for the warmth, then 1176 Comp and ending with a Distressor emulation(a very good one, real close to the hardware) I have the Distressor set to 10:1 so it activates the Opto mode. although I might try 2:1 or 4:1 next time. oh and I love the 2nd Order Harmonics button on the Distressor. Sounds very analogue. Sometime I’ll add tape emulation after the Distressor
Isn't the 160 an affordable rack mount? Never mind I used that one for live performance all the time. I thought it was the greatest piece of equipment I've ever owned. A must have
Is there a particular reason for having the DBX before the 1176 instead of after it? I haven’t tried it yet with my plugins, but I’m thinking that the occasional super aggressive peaks will cause the DBX to work super hard. Would be nice to have them caught by the 1176 before they reach the DBX for gentle compression. Is my concern valid? Eager to get your thoughts! :)
yes 100% it just keeps everything level at the end as he said the super aggressive note so it shouldnt even matter unless you peak a word which more of a singing thing aside from sibilance rapping
Depends on the singer. Compression/Limiting isn't always used. I prefer the 1066 over the 1073, but any Neve 10_ _ is fine. On my voice I've tried a U67 or C12A into a 1066 into an LA-2A in Limit mode with 3-5 dB reduction. Another one I've used is a Shure KSM313 into an RCA/Retro OP-6, into a Chandler Zener limiter in Limit mode.
Analog or Digital, what is your favourite chain for recording vocals?

Api or SSL ch strip into 1176
WA412 into an 1176 at a 4:1 ratio, somewhat fast attack, fast release
@@e.apollis2877 API
@@sushirollusa API 5khz & 10khz boost,
SSL the magic 8khz boost.
It's so good sometimes getting a real answer instead as the usual "it depends on..." 😅

this is the exactly the type of content im looking for! too much gatekeeping.
Glad to be able to help!
I used free plugin emulation of these gears to emulate the chain and my raw vocal sounds so great. This actually works! Wow Thanks
That’s wonderful to hear
What are the names of these free plug-in emulations you speak of?
@@l_ord9I also wanna know

What are the names of the plugins bro?
I mainly do rap vocals but I'm gonna try your chain out!
My favorite chain for recording vocals? Probably Boston Market. Love the acoustics :)
Damn bro where do you live? there’s no more Boston markets out here in my area (SoCal)
@@barrybmusic7742 A few have survived her in the Houston area
will definitely try this chain. awesome tip warren! 👌🏻 cheers! 🇵🇭
Love, love, love these. And I don't produce. Can barely play guitar, actually. Still, love these.
Thanks ever so much
Wow, once again : how lucky we are ! Thank You, Warren.

My wallet cried a little bit more than usual today.

there is a nasty resonance up on top. could use some soothe

1028 here and love it!
thank you
I dont have money for all that , i use free plugins| by analog obsession
Britpre(neve 1073)
DBCOMP(dbx 160)
Fetish(1176)
I use almost the same.
I used BritChannel from Analog Obsssession instead of Britpre.
I tired this on my vocal chain. thx : )
That’s great to hear!
😊
Thanks ever so much

The ratio of the DBX would only be set to 3:1 so it won’t adversely affect the sound. I find the 1176 set properly should only catch the worst peaks
@@Producelikeapro Thank you very much for the reply. I wasn’t taking into account the DBX’s ratio, makes sense! 🙌
For rap vocals would you still keep a 20:1 ratio on 1176
yes 100% it just keeps everything level at the end as he said the super aggressive note so it shouldnt even matter unless you peak a word which more of a singing thing aside from sibilance rapping
Feel like you got the last two instances reversed when you talk about how they respond in the meter. I could be wrong
Hi Warren. I remember you mentioned the shelford in your channel. Would you still use this with the dbx 160 and 1176? Or a CL1b?
I do love Shelford! You could definitely use it instead of a 1073
I'm wondering if the dbx 286s would be a decent substitute for the dbx 160 that Warren uses. Professional sound worthy?
I too wonder. Did you try?

Have not.

Just £5k for that.
Super, super expensive chain. And thats not including the mic.😮
Not the classic 1176 going to LA2A?
