If you’re serious about it you can sometimes get them at the chinese supermarkets in london’s chinatown. The durians are frozen before shipping tho so the smell wouldn’t be as pungent as the real deal.

if you plug your nose so you can't smell it Durian probably tastes fine. it's not toxic or whatever, it just stinks, so if you hide the smell you're good to go. Lutefisk (the picture) is a Scandinavian delicacy, delicious and not smelly at all. You're thinking of surströmming (the guy opening the can in the car), however, which is not edible unless you're Swedish.
Durian is pretty strong-smelling, yeah. That's why, if you're a fresh new person trying to eat it, go for the ones that are frozen and dethawed (ameliorates the smell) or eat it outside where it will dissipate faster. Or eat durian-based desserts to see if you like it.
Durian is a normal thing for many people down in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore. Granted, even there not all people like the fruit. It is banned in most public spaces aside from markets and some parks because of the smell and the fact that it's a naturally grown spiky mace more than capable of hurting someone. In my experience, durian is something best enjoyed you can it get fresh at a stall in a market on the side of the road, where you pick a spiky boi, the person standing by the side with a machete grabs it wearing a glove, splits it down the middle, then sometimes proceeds to take off said glove and finish the job of prying it open with their hands. You then can scoop out all the seeds and the yellow flesh and eat it right there and then if you want. The smell when fresh is still quite powerful, but far better than if you were to get it imported, at which point the smell has really soured. (Which exacerbates the stigma around it) The taste when fresh is often described as a slightly smoky vanilla or caramelly custard. The texture is creamy, odd for a fruit and so some may not enjoy it even if they like the taste.
I do in fact want to try an actual durian someday. I've had durian popsicles that people said tasted disgusting, tasted like bananas to me. Someone bought Durian cookies and put them in my cubicle as a prank, I was happily eating them until everyone with a desk within 50 yards converged and made me take them out to the trash bin. Now neither the popsicles nor the cookies are the actual fruit but either it was a huge prank involving way too many people, or I might just be one of those people who finds Durian amazing.

I've had durian... it does smell pretty bad, but the taste is pretty nice actually. We were outdoors, on a roof, which for sure helped.
