N.J. state investigators test boardwalk games of chance for impossible odds

  • We all suspect it, but is it true? Are boardwalk games rigged? State investigators from an under-the-radar unit at the state's Division of Consumer Affairs will often follow up on complaints by covertly visiting outlets at peak hours and ferreting out violations of the laws that govern "games of chance." That can mean anything from lopsided basketball hoops, to immovable prizes, to darts missing the fins that keep them steady. Despite the widespread notion that boardwalk game operators tilt the odds in their favor, investigators with the DCA's Legalized Games of Chance Control Commission say most licensed operators are in compliance. The games are just hard. Commission officers joined county health officials at the boardwalk in Point Pleasant yesterday to launch the state's "Safe Summer 2011" task force. In addition to assessing the level of fair play, officials also tested food and toys. (Video by Nyier Abdou/The Star-Ledger)

      +pkmanlol6 She may not be responsible when it comes to potential fines but as the operator on duty she is responsible for fixing the violations. I would assume that the faulty darts would just need to stopped being used until they are repaired. That is her responsibility to remove them from use until that's done.

    • @walterbabst2218
      @walterbabst2218 Před 8 lety +74

      Kanders190 Yeah but i'm guessing the owner or manager/boss didn't explain to her that faulty darts need to be removed. She can claim ignorance. Get off your fucking high horse, she's just a worker, blame the owner or manager.

    • @Kanders190

      +Walter Babst Haha what high horse? It doesn't matter that she's "just a worker" and it doesn't matter if she claims ignorance. The people that do these audits don't care that she's "just a teenager worker earning minimum wage", if she's the one there operating the game, she has to know what to do. They give you two options. Fix the problem or shut down. I've had experience with similar groups like the guys in the video and they are usually pretty nice. They tell you exactly what you need to do to fix the problem. I'm sure they just told her that those particular darts can't be used anymore until they are repaired. I'm sorry that you're upset at my preposterous idea that the individual working there would have to do her job. My bad, yo.

    I never understood why the claw games with the stuffed animals were rigged to that extent. The thing can't cost more than 2 cents to make and you're making it so every $100 dollars that goes into the machine causes it to spit out one.

    • @mcshakycheese7396
      @mcshakycheese7396 Před 8 lety +23

      +SoaR Hardly The games all have internal settings that you can adjust to change the difficulty of the game. The most common thing to do is to set a "payout ratio," which would allow for the claw to grip with appropriate strength every x out of y times. Of course, this doesn't help the case shown in the video where the prize is impossible to grab, regardless of the strength of the claw. It's similar to gambling in that you're paying for the chance to be that lucky person the jackpot lands on, but you've got to go in with the mindset knowing that there is not that much skill involved. I tend to stick to the actual skill based games, because knowing what I know makes the other games a whole lot less fun.

      actually the plush cost more then 2 cents they often cost at a least dollar for smaller generic plush.once you start talking bigger licensed plush it starts to get into the 10 to 15 dollar range.
      also they aren't all impossible to win(they actually legally can't be).older claws can't be rigged to change pay out and even on ones with set pay out rates if you are skilled enough you can beat the claw.also if they really are impossible to win call the game board cause legally all claw machines have to be win able.

      because it's the best $ trap out there for a nice parent.
      you walk by with the kids, kids point at one of the plush toys, and you want to be the nice dad or the cool mom that beat the game to get the prize for a small price,
      yet you flunk 10 or maybe even 20$ and can't get it out or to get it.
      1 to 5$ plush bring in 100% profit and more.

    I once found an owners manual for a claw machine in the basement of a former job. Reading it revealed that it could actually be set for a number of different cheats, such as programming when the claw has enough strength to pick up an object; or even how many tries you get when before claw moves a few MM as it lowers to miss the object

    Many of these newer games like the claw or digital games are programs to only allow a single win for every other 200game played or so. This means that even though you should have won, the game was programmed so you would lose unless that number had Ben satisfied.

    The claw.. isn't it rigged to actually grasp tight only every so often?

    • @jeremywj
      @jeremywj Před 4 lety +6

      Yep. Typically they are programmed to only grasp tight on a certain percentage of plays. All other plays you have 0% chance of winning. Even the plays that it does grip tight you still have at best probably a 50% chance of winning. The claw games that have high value prizes probably have a lower chance than winning big on a $1 scratch off ticket. Honestly though, it doesn't really matter much. If you play games at the carnival you should be playing only to have fun. Even if you win you are going to win crap that you'll probably never mess with or play with again after a day or so.

    • @alyxburton3245
      @alyxburton3245 Před 4 lety +2

      In my experience, the claw gets a tighter grip the more money the machine has inside. When it cashes out a prize, it resets. Pretty shitty, but lots of others do it too, like the Stacker machine (I'm still proud of winning a rigged one to this day)

    • @Andrew-yl7lm
      @Andrew-yl7lm Před 4 lety +1

      @@alyxburton3245 I remember reading that this is indeed the case but it isn't actually dependant on if the prize is won. If the claw does it's 100℅ guaranteed grab and hold but your aim was off and no prize was lifted, it simply resets again.

    • @swolf073
      @swolf073 Před 4 lety

      Most newer claw games have a setting were you set how often it can payout between 0 to 99. So a 12 would mean about one payout every 12 games. This lets owners set their profits from the machine. So if the plushes cost $2 with a 8(every eight games) and $.50 you would make about $2 per payout. By change cost per game our payout frequency you can increase your margin.

      We "dummies" use the claw machines and put out hard earned cash for the fun of the game. These people who investigate the machines to insure the fun, difficulty, and reward of the games. Another reason why we play these games is the high risk, high reward. It's no fun to work 8 hours, for the past 2-4 weeks, just to get your giant angry bird plushy or iPad 2. I have a point so don't try to argue with me.

    • @SmokeyBluntRoach
      @SmokeyBluntRoach Před 9 lety +2

      this dummy has no problems winning. last time i spent a few on a claw machine, i walked away with a walking dead plush zombie, a green domo, a thor plush, a raphael plush, a transformers hat (optimus prime) and a knock-off angry bird and a few random bears for my two kids. the true "dummies" are the ones trying to win prizes that are buried, or ones that the claw doesn't fit around, causing the claw to slide right off. now games like key master, stacker, and other modern machines can actually have odds set, as high as 1 in 2500 at random. at random means it could be game 50, or it could be game 2031 that wins. so for example stacker, thats up to 2,500 games possibly considering you can get to the major prize line every time. then again, if there has been 1000 games played, and 1001 is the magic number set at random by the machine, and you get to the major prize line, you can win an ipad. the more expensive the prizes, the higher the odds. just gotta know what to look for and what to expect.

      Yeah that's why.

    I thought I've heard that those claw games could be programmed so that the claw is strong enough only a percentage of the time

    how do you contact these guys? I had a group on a prize that should not have slipped at least half a dozen times just the other day. It dropped every time just before the claw raised fully. I'm talking about a fully closed claw slipping open and dripping the prize straight down, it didn't slide out the side or anything like that.

    yeah some of those claw machines only fully grab every 15-20 tries, but in this case, the box was way to heavy

    • @Lyro92
      @Lyro92 Před 7 lety

      The thing is that it should never be too heavy to never get. It's not a game where you have to pick the right box, it's supposed to be about skill in order to grip something the right way. That's the point.

    When I was a kid, about the same age as those shown, I threw the dart and somehow it managed to squeeze through a gap in the wall, hitting a passer-by in the arm, near an artery. This guy was shooting blood, and that experience haunted me for years of childhood, haha.
