      Except it wasn't accurate in that most flappers are universal and only thing to know is 2" vs 3" which can be easily achieved by bringing the old flapper with you. Boom.

      Small caveat is Kohler, but most universals I found have adapters for the nuanced flappers, therefore most universals are truly, universal. Takes zero effort, literally

    Very helpful video!
    We experienced "ghost flushing" every few hours or so. We had no idea it was due to worn out old flapper valves. Our valves were original OEM and 24 years old.
    Time for replacement for sure!! Picked up a couple of new flapper valves at Amazon and installed per this video and problem solved!!! No more leaking or wasted water back into the toilet bowl or ghost flushing!!
    Thank you RotoRooter! We were going to call a very expensive SF plumber too! Saved us a bundle!

    DON"T BELIEVE "universal size" flapper it's not true! I found it is best to bring the old bad flapper to the hardware store for comparison alongside what is available to buy. After buying a "universal" size, and trying to install it I found that the distance from the hinge points to mean center of the seal was too long and the "universal" flapper would not seat into the hole causing a continuing leakage. Back to the hardware store the next day with the old flapper, I eyeballed it side by side with others and was able to choose the correct size flapper which worked perfectly when installed. No more leakage.

    • @RotoRooterTV
      @RotoRooterTV  Před 8 lety +1

      It's always good advice to take your original flapper valve with you to the hardware store and match it up with the right replacement part, but universal flappers will fit the majority of toilets out there - though not all, as you learned. Thanks for your constructive comment.

      1. Make a decision (somehow) to cut the part of the new flapper off, that part that seems like it could help seat the flapper.
      2. Wish that you had 1/4 turn off valves if you instead have a 25-20 year old gate valve that doesn't turn all the way off...
      3. Do your new flapper install.
      4. See how easy that was!!

      We get it, and it does seem silly until you understand that our plumbers must follow all OSHA safety guidelines. I believe this one was probably put in place due to the risk of chemical cleaners that are in so many toilet tanks. Plumbers also encounter toilets in which the owners have poured caustic chemical drain openers. A splash to the eyes of either of these can be dangerous and painful.

    Removal of the existing flap is not as easy as shown in this video. If the flapper has stiffened over time and isn't flexible enough to remove as shown, use a pair of plier-cutters to cut the old one up if necessary so it can easily slip over the pegs.

    I did mine without shutting off the water. I disconnected the chain to the old flapper, and unhooked its arms, but left the flapper in place. Then I hooked up the chain to the new flapper, set it down on top of the old flapper, hooked up the arms on the new flapper, then pulled the old flapper out from underneath the new one, losing no more water than a flush of the toilet.

    I tried to remove the old flapper by "pulling the old flapper from pivot arm mount pegs on the overflow tube"...but it would not come off no matter how much I pulled and twisted. I was afraid of breaking the mounting pegs, so I stopped pulling and cut the tough old flapper off with an exacto knife. The old flapper was hard and rigid. This was excellent.... I looked at the flapper that was in my toliet... I order it from amazon and got it overnight.. I literally did EXACTLY what he said to do and it is done!!! I had that "ghost flushing" mostly and every once in a while I would hear it bubbling in the bowl but only for a few seconds but then the "ghost flushing" started every day instead of once in a while and then is stared every 20 or 30 minutes... that is when I started goggling... So happy to find this ths you tube video.... Now I just installed it and so far I hear nothing but it is still too soon to see if that was the actual problem but I think it is because there was never an actual leak on the floor or behind the toliet that I could see... however, maybe someone can answer this for me.... when I replaced the flapper I noticed that there was like a putty type of seal under the flapper that actually hits the bottom on the bowl.. half of that was floating around and the other half was sealed... I know I had a gasket issue last year and a plumber came over and removed the tank and replaced the gasket on the bottom of the bowl... at that time he also replaced the flapper and I am sure it was an OK flapper but it didn't last more then a year because it was not a fluidmaster as far as I am concerned, but my question is to anyone... I have NO LEAKS that I know of and I am positive the gasket under the tank was just replaced... should I be worried about that seal or is there a way to replace that seal without having to remove the filler valve?? Thanks and I will get back and let you now if this was indeed the issue but I have not heard anything thus far... Thanks for this video... it was just perfect and easy for me to do so I didn't have to call a man or beg for help... I actually did it myself... KUDOS
