      Not to be nitpicking too much either, but only a certain basketball team pronounces it "sell-tic". Any other pronunciation is "kel-tic", which is the proper Irish pronunciation.

    When Geoff does the line ‘carve his heart out’ he’s holding a wooden spoon. This is a nod to one of Alan Rickman’s lines in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves.
    People have said the same thing about losing members, but after Earl and then J left, VoicePlay is still intact. Geoff and Layne have both said that they arrange for the people they have, not who they would like to have. So the loss of a member - while they would be missed - would not mean the end of the group.
    In November when VoicePlay is performing with Chicago in Atlantic City, there’s a chance Eli may not be there. (He’s expecting the birth of his son about then). But they will have a backup, and will be amazing!
    There’s even a video out there of a Christmas performance at Disney World. It’s their set and arrangements and the name VoicePlay on the set, but every single performer there was one of their backups! (Not as amazing, but pretty good!)

    • @Badger77722
      @Badger77722 Před rokem +3

      I sang it back in the 60s in elementary school music class, and we also pronounced it "er-lie" as well (although we used PG versions of the verses!). It probably has something to do with either pronunciation from several hundred years ago when it originated, or something to do with accenting the second syllable for whatever job it was used for as a sea shanty.

  • @janetdw
    @janetdw Před rokem +14

    It has been sung at a lot of camps where they substitute some of the more questionable lyrics with a little more family-friendly ones. It’s a call and response piece and lends itself well to a lot of humor. They list some of the things they could do to either punish or sober up their Drunken Sailor. Geoff wrote the bridge that comes in right after the sailor tosses the doll away.
    VoicePlay has, of course, pushed that limit as far as they could. The cast is the same as it was Hoist the Colours with the addition of a friend of Geoff and Layne from back when they performed under another group name.
    Bucky also was in the mini of the Candy Crush song as the deranged mall shopper that decided to pop in. You can see him in the background bopping along. He is so funny!
    He was also in their mini of 500 Miles where once again he jumped into the group. In that one, Geoff can barely keep a straight face while he’s singing because he knows that Bucky is just a little bit crazy. In that piece Bucky acknowledges their history when he turns around and waves at Geoff and Layne.
    He also did the choreography for the cover that Geoff did of Monster Mash a few years back.
    I hope we see more of him. He has his own brand of silliness to their special kind of dumb.
    By the way, on Geoff’s solo channel he does narrations. Edgar Allan Poe just gives me the creeps. Most of them are scary stuff so I don’t listen to those. But he did a beautiful job of the Night before Christmas. It is incredibly soothing. I also really enjoyed his narration of the Cremation of Sam McGee.

    Bucky is an online Gamer, voice actor and works at Disney World. He stops in every now and then to say hi to the guys.
    Bucky can also be seen in 2 of Voiceplay minis... Candy Crush and I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) as a mall shopper.
    In this one Geoff told him the basic script and let him ad lib his part.
    That's another thing Voiceplay is awesome at. Not rehearsing until right before filming.
    This one is definitely alot of fun.

They were talking about moving them back to the main channel and discontinuing the minis channel. They moved some but I guess they got too busy to move the rest. So for now they're on one channel or the other. Newer on main.

    On your comment about great voices - another great speaking voice was given an actual nod in this video. Geoff’s “cut his heart out” is motioned with that wooden spoon. A clear reference to Alan Rickman’s line as the Sheriff of Nottingham, regarding using a spoon to do so because it will hurt more. Rickman’s voice was velvety lusciousness. For those who don’t recognize the name, he was probably best known to most people as Professor Snape in the Potter movies.

    The first time I ever heard this song, was on a family trip to Baltimore and Anapolis in the mid eighties. I don't remember for sure whether it was one of the songs sung by a group of teenagers who were performing at a lighthouse we visited in Baltimore, or whether the enlisted men at the Naval Academy were singing it (they were having a "parent's weekend" so were doing some performances for visitors). Probably the latter, but I'm not 100% on that. What I do remember for sure, is the odd pronunciation of "early", which was similar to what VoicePlay is doing here, especially on the second syllable. So, I guess it's a traditional feature of the song?

    Being into pirate fests, I've heard hundreds of renditions of this song. 99% of the time it's sang "earl-eye." Not sure when that started, maybe a leftover of mosty-Irish sailors from the Age of Piracy. I have seen a whole audience dressed in pirate garb suddenly pull out cutlasses and blunderbusses and go into a mutiny when a music group at a pirate festival sang "earl-ee in the morning" instead of "earl-eye." No one hurt, but a lot of "ARRRRGH WHAT YE BE DOIN' MATEY!" from the folks trying too hard to "talk like a pirate."
