Ghiaurov and Talvela together were simply magnificent. Ghiaurov, elegantly imposing. ..Talvela, the snarling menace, the head of the Inquisition. Both men's voices were tidalwaves of sound. And Verdi's genius to write this duet as a "one-up-manship" declarative vocal line remains one of the greatest scenes he ever wrote. The tension between the two literally is breath-taking!! RIP both Ghiaurov and Talvela. They are both long gone - but egad how blessed we are to have their recordings.
This, right here, is why I love Italian opera: we have the gorgeous stylings of the Bel Canto masters on the one hand...and on the other,we have this. Just spectacular .
Both Ghiaurov and Talvela are formidable here, but especially Talvela's emotional expressiveness and intensity drives the action forward! He is definitely the number one grand inquisitore! Fantastic duet!!! No one of today's singers can repeat this! Unfortunately!! :-(
....Two Titans of operatic history in a reference recording for eternity...together with Corelli and Verett absolutely up in the Olymp... Mi piace moltissimo
Since I haven't heard every performance in history of this duet, I cannot say for certainty that none other was as good as this, but I can say that none other surpassed this, because both of these performances are utter perfection. Two of the basso GOATs, both with stupendously large, beautiful and deep voices, and both of whom sang their part with incredible passion and musical perfection. The genius of Verdi was that he matched these two voices to the 2 top rulers of Spain, the king and the grand inquisitor, and the power rivalry between them permeates the lyrics and the vocal line of this incredible duet. These 2 singers capture the power of the 2 leaders with their voices, and their singing captures the complex psychological rivalry between them. Thanks a mil for the upload.
I honk the siepi and hines duet surpasses this one. I disagree with some of the artistic choices in this version, and while Talvela has a massive voice, it feels like it needs to sound older (which Hines did a good job with). I still like this performance, but I don’t think it’s at the top. Ghiaurov is a beast among beasts though, my personal favorite bass.
Totally agree- opera today is a dying art, houses are more concerned with egocentric producers rather than standards of singing which have been falling at an alarming rate.
...Today egocentric directors use the textbook iso la partitura. Music is sometimes secondary. And furthermore during the times of a Talvela and a Ghiaurov big voices were demanded and developed. Today they develop even voices where there is no voice at all . They burn like candles and are easily substituted by the next ones. Dreadful to see male voices on top level opera houses. Mediocrity reigns supreme. Dreadful. RDS
@@roideschats8799I just listened to that performance. It's stunning. I had to come here right away to compare with Ghiaurov. This scene was not familiar to me until recently, and now has become my favorite duet in all opera. Talvela displays a hideous character while singing beautifully. Nobody did it better
Of the many live recordings of Ghiaurov and Talvela in this duet, the present one from Vienna 1970 is my favourite. Absolutely peerless interpretation of two titanic voices. And with Corelli and Verrett, like Ghiaurov and Talvela, in sensational form, this is one of the greatest live Don Carlo performances on record (pity for the soprano and baritone: Frieni had not started singing Elisabetta yet and Bastianini was already dead; with them the cast would have been the ideal one!).
In Buenos Aires, 1971, Don Carlo was sang at the Teatro Colón by Ghiaurov and Giovanni Foiani and it was absolutely great. Because Foiani though he was Italian had almost a "russian" voice.
Two of the best in their roles... nowadays basses have no that height and also the deepnes in their voices. Natural singing with true talent. todays basses are pretending singing, too educated and too hyped gyus, everybody just telling them that sound great... listen to this!
P. S. Orchestra a dir poco fantastica!

Un duel de Titans, Verdi was such a genius to compose such a duel. So dark and evil.
Here is the proof that opera is the greatest of all art forms, the human voice its exponent, this the duet written by a true genius.
Ein Duell zweier Titanen. Einfach grandios!

due Grandi della lirica !
grazie !
Talvela is a force of nature!
The most exciting version ever I think. They were both in fire!
Magistral duo ! Inégalé.
Ghiaurov owns the role and wins
Whatever the score says, these are both kings!
great comment, nearly a decade later, I tell you "nice work"
So marvelously dark. Thank you for posting.

Play this at my marriage, my funeral, i dont know i dont need anything else besides this orgasmic sensation of satisfaction that this gives
I can't think of anything today that would match or even come close to this sadly... So glad we have these recordings....
You're SO right, Kofi!!

Holy crap Talvela is terrifying, and Ghiaurov is titanic. No better pairing for this scene!
Mark Decker I couldn't agree more. The music is chilling and interpreted by both singers perfectly.
Greindl (Filipo) and Talvela (inquisitore) are also very good ... on youtube
Christoff and Neri, Neri already suffering from cancer
@@andreasgattiker9831Neri died of a heart attack. Did he also have cancer?

bastianinicorelli Gundula molto meglio 😁
Tremendous!
I love this performance.Corelli's Don Carlo and Verrett's Eboli also amazing.
Mostruosamente bravi

VERO!!! grazie
Wow!!!
My Italian friends take Verdi for a god, and by God they're right.

My personal favorite performance of this scene is Macurdy’s and Siepi’s at the met (1972)
I really like Talvela and Macurdy as the inquisitors. They’re my favorites.
I do feel like the inquisitor is a little way too energetic in this interpretation though.
boy if that doesn't shake you...

Orchestra a dir poco fantastica!
Troppo ingeneroso con talvela
My apologies... Please forgive me for this.... But.... FUCK YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THAT'S PURE OPERA!!!!!!!!
Very singulair.
Conductor: Hors Stein
Who's conducting? Solti?
Did his voice break or Crack at 6:22 or was that just expression?
Expression.
I did not even notice that at all. I guess Talvela's towering vocal acting won me over that effectively.
Sorry, Horst Stein
the number of cough's is absurd!!
