Absolutely the best Basses ever! I know them so well......they sang during my time at Berlin and Vienna!!

Two of the best bassos ever. Talvela was simply unrivaled as the Inquisitor, given his massive frame and huge, biting voice. Ghiaurov was similarly unmatched as Filippo, bringing genuine humanity to the role.

Interpreti ideali per un duetto sublime. Ghiaurov è il miglior basso della storia.

Such a hard, imposing aria with two powerful voices... Talvela is terrifying as the Inquisitor.

Susi K It's a terrifying piece of music. The whole thing is meant to frighten not only Philip but the audience as well. Bravo Verdi!

Two giants with titanic voices. The ideal Filippo / Inquisitore pair of the world's leading theatres through the 1960s and 1970s, fortunately preserved in numerous live Don Carlos.

Talvela, one of my favorite basses, was a force of nature. Born to sing the Inquisitor as well as Hagen, Boris, Osmin and Sarastro. Sadly taken from us much too soon. Ghiarov was also an imposing and fantastic singer in his own right.

Scontro di titani. Ognuno eccelle nel suo ruolo. Ghiaurov semplicemente perfetto. Talvela monumentale, anche se ogni tanto si lascia andare a ringhiate veriste, secondo me non adatte ad un grande componimento operistico-sinfonico qual il Don Carlo è.

A pity this wasn't recorded on film . . . it would be interesting to compare it with my favorite version with Talvela as the Inquisitor and Josef Greindl as Philip (in German). Talvela was frightening in the version with Greindl . . . a towering, maleficent fanatic.

So, a third version of this Ghiaurov/Talvela duo, after Solti (1965) and before Stein (1970). Interesting. Regarding Talvela, it is clearly in the Stein version that he is the most violent (almost too much! even with his own voice)

The recording quality does not do justice to Talvela. He records here much lighter than he would have sounded live. But he still sounds lower than Ghiaurov, and Talvela has the better downrange of the two. Both are superb topside.
Hopefullly there is somewhere a 1935-ish recording of this duet with Ezio Pinza as the King and Emanuel List as the Inquisitor. That would have been a recording for the ages, the ne plus ultra.

Listen how Ghiaurov's voice is much grander and bigger than Talvela who sounds like his junior here. I saw Talvela many times on stage and he was a fine singer, but I thought both Ghiaurov and Hines were better in their competing repertoire. My apologies to the Talvela fans who will be all over me. He and I had one thing in common, a bad heart problem. He died from his early in his career, and my career was cut short because of mine. (This is not a very good tape of this.)

I admit, but in 1968, Talvela was only 33 years old, which is quite young for the Inquisitor's profundo. Lsten to him 2 or 3 years later, the change in his voice is quite audible.

you must be confusing voices, sir. it is ghiaurov who sounds like a light tenor. i know the recording is sharp.

Joseph Shore: You write that Talvela was only "a fine singer". When you write that, for me, you first and foremost say a lot about who you are, not so much about Talvela. I'm sorry, but I have to write this. And you say that Hines was better than him - how could you....? I agree that Ghiaurov was fantastic - except for one thing - his top notes. But for me, and thousands others, the soul in Talvela's voice made it so special and so moving. In that area he had much in common with Jussi Bjørling. Imagine those two together in Hostias from Verdi Requiem.... And I agree with 1donpizarro - his voice became bigger - later reviewers called it mighty. And if your voice is mighty, you are not a junior, Mr. Shore!

Vilhelm Hammershoi are you kidding? Ghiaurov's Italian is flawless, if you didn't know he's not Italian you would basically think of him as a native speaker
