    Purchased a 70’s house that had to be completely refurbished, including full re plumb, insisted everything was to be in 22mm pipe, still had flow problems, so replaced the incoming mains, still had problems, found out the plumber has used the very cheapest isolating valves he could buy, changed them for full flow valves, job done. Since fitted a water softener, which has reduced flow, now looking at a home boost pump.

    • @craigwatson7692
      @craigwatson7692 Před 4 lety

      Water softeners usually dont impact the water flow to a household. I would check that the water softener is fitted with a highflow hose kit. You'll know by looking at it. The standard kit is fed from the same valves and hoses you would feed your washing machine with. The highflow kits use fullbore valves and bigger diameter hoses.

    I stay in a rural part of Scotland with mains water but for whatever reason we have the most outrageously high water pressure I’ve ever seen. Could fill up a 4 pint water jug in about a second whilst soaking the ceiling. Can fire a hose over the 2 storey house at half pressure.
    We’ve actually had to limit the water entering the property down to about 20% to make things manageable.
    Seeing as water is unmetered here I’ve often wondered if I could run my own hydroelectric system from the kitchen sink!

    • @johnburns4017
      @johnburns4017 Před 4 lety

      You need a pressure reducer on the mains pipe as it enters the property. Too high a pressure can ruin plumbing fittings and appliances.

    Great informative video as always Alan. Where possible I would always recommend a new mains supply to a customer over a pump, less moving parts to go wrong in the future that will cost a few hundred pound to fix. Pumps these days even the brass ones dont last that long. I would say 10 years max and that it is been optimistic vs 20+ years easily with only a nip up of a gland nut required 😁. Obviously a new mains pipe isnt always an option and it's a good that all these options are available. Probably an obvious question but with the mainsboost from stuartturner, I presume they are the standard monsoon single impellar pumps that are attached to the accumulator and if they do fail, the pump itself is replaceable without the need to replace the accumulator too?

    Thanks for the video Alan, hope you're well. How would the big accumulators and home boost compare to pressure from a twin impeller shower pump for just supplying a bathroom? I know it's more of a whole property solution, but would you still recommend a shower pump to a customer to boost bathroom pressure as well or can something like the home boost handle it all? Thanks

    • @craigwatson7692
      @craigwatson7692 Před 4 lety +3

      You cant really compare a twin impellar booster pump with the home or mainsboost systems. Both are used for different systems. A twin impellar pump will be recommended for a customer who is using a gravity fed water supply where the mains or homeboost is suited to those who are using a mains water system.

    Thanks Alan. Can I please ask you for some advice ?
    We have around 14-16 litres a minute static from a 15mm mains pipe. We had a viessmann combi fitted last year and as long as one outlet is open things are fine.
    When the shower is on and someone flushes the toilet downstairs, the shower is left to dribble.
    Can I please ask to know what I could do to fix this ? Should we have our mains pipe replaced to a 25mm, or is there anything else more cost effective ?
    I have a viessmann 100 30kw which provides up to 12 litres a minute.

    Flow rates and pressure drops. A case in point. Typical "conversation", one way though, twixt me n the missus.
    "What the bloody hell have you been up to? Yer filthy. Get nekid on't back door mat 'n gerrin that shower, now!"
    I dutifully oblige. I get in shower, lather up mi bonce with shampoo and the shower reduces to a trickle.
    She's chucked mi filthy clothes in the wash mac and turned it on. The shower virtually stops.
    A pressure equalisation valve was fitted under the bath feeding non thermo shower mixer. Wash mac cold feed demanding -> shower reduces to a trickle.
    Ripped the blasted thing out when I redid the bathroom last year and fitted a thermo bar mixer. So now, wash mac on and demanding and I can shower at the same time, baht standing eyes tight shut, lest shampoo gets in them whilst waiting for the wash mac to fill.
    Alan, what sort of shampoo do you use?
    I'd share but I am not on any other social media platform and I don't do Twitter. I have hit like tho.

    What would be the best option to boost mains pressure to the property on a gravity fed system , why would the salamander boost not be suitable

    • @billybobhouse9559
      @billybobhouse9559 Před 3 lety

      The salamander would boost your cold mains only. The hot water pressure would still be governed by your tank in the loft and so would not be improved with the salamander pump. You could have an additional pump plumbed into your hot water cylinder which would improve your hot water flow significantly but please bear in mind they are quite noisy and will drain a small cylinder of hot water reasonably quickly. Hope this helps.

    Excellent video, thank you though i'm still not sure how to sort our pressure problem. Already upgraded mains to 25mm mdpe prior to Baxi Platinum 40kw being fitted in the garage (used to get about 12-14lpm now about 18lpm'ish on outside tap), new combi should be doing 16.4lpm but only get about 12lpm up stairs on the hot, (cold is working as expected), to be fare the shower on its own is fine until other HOT taps are switched on. Think the issue is due to dynamic pressure, static is about 2bar but when one tap is on it goes down to about 0.5 bar, if the tap being turned on is the hot one the shower up stairs is unusable at that point, 2 taps on hot and the shower stops. One thing thats a bit rubbish is we have the new 25mm MDPE going to 15mm stop tap, then a 15mm T, would it make sense to change that section to all 22mm? Anyway, I think its a bit of an odd one as the flow is really okay but maybe we have a pressure problem, should the Baxi be preforming better at that pressure? Already put a flow restricted nozel on the kitchen sink which has helped a little. Hope you can give some advice. Thank you.

      Annoyingly we have the same problem in our house, the previous owners had the house extended, a new plastic mains pipe put in and a fantastic ATAG Q38C high flow boiler then the pleb plumber who did the install used 15mm stop cock and 15mm pipe so can’t have a shower and use a another tap as flow drops off a cliff 😑

    • @radfoo
      @radfoo Před 4 lety +1

      @@copperskills3973 Thanks for reply. Issue is not so bad with other COLD taps but you would still think it would make some performance difference so ordered the parts to change this over. Its a shame i'm not getting that 16.4l out of the baxi, I assume it has a minimum working pressure to get the advertised rate. I'm thinking the only thing thats going to sort it properly is an accumulator, but don't really want a pump. Its def a funny one as most people have low pressure and flow, not just the low pressure so normally more clear cut, struggling to find info and advice on my particular situation. Thanks

    • @radfoo
      @radfoo Před 4 lety +1

      @@dan123collins Yeah, its bonkers isn't it. I asked the plumber that fitted the boiler and he said it won't make any difference. I'm not expecting a miracle and this is not the main issue (still have pressure issues if you just use the hot tap), but it has to make some difference, just wish I understood flow rate and pressure maths/formulas as should be able to work out the theory but it blew my mind, lol.

    • @radfoo
      @radfoo Před 4 lety

      @@copperskills3973 yeah, gas pipework upgraded, it's only a couple of metres away so was no bother at time of install. Overall I think the installation of the boiler itself is correct. (Edit - Though more considerations should have been made to the pressure and flow, unless the boiler itself is faulty?)

    • @craigwatson7692
      @craigwatson7692 Před 4 lety

      Problem is you have is low static pressure which in turn gives you a low working pressure. You can improve your flow by increasing your stoptap to a 25/22mm and if its accessible, replace as much copper from the stop tap in 22mm copper as possible. It wont be a drastic improvement but will help. Unfortunately though it sounds like your plumber hasnt installed the correct boiler to suit your system. The problem can be solved but not without further cost.
      Also just thinking about it, when you had a new 25mm main installed, was this a full new supply with new boundary stop tap or did the plumber install the pipe himself and make the connection after the boundary stop tap.

    • @craigwatson7692
      @craigwatson7692 Před 4 lety

      Booster pumps in general are against water regs as you cant directly pump off the mains. I believe the mainsboost systems get around this as it pumps water from the reservoir and not direct off the mains. I wasnt aware of the 12lpm cap for pumping mains either but the homeboost has been around for a good few years now so it's safe to say it isnt a new regulation.

    • @DALEYPLUMBING

      My Monkey - you can install an approved pump to the mains without consent as long as the capacity doesn't exceed 12ltrs per min. If you require more than 12 ltrs per minute, you can apply by submitting a Regulation 5 application to your local water company.
