You get the 'Handy Andy' award for 2016. I don't see much of this anymore and it is truly refreshing. I'm from the 'baby boomer gen.', we fix, improve or invent what we use, nowadays it's 'throw it away', somebody needs to start a trash service where we send it all back to China!
Marty....you're DIY skills are turbo! I don't have the guts to cut into my yak, but you are fearless and it always comes out looking top rate professional. Well done and thanks for sharing.
Another winner! You are the most creative dude. I don't know if you have ever heard of it, but there is a Marine Sealant called 5200 by 3M. If you wanted to glue those wooden blocks instead of using screws 5200 will bond anything together in a permanent fashion. It is great stuff. It is a bulk glue for sealing areas that don't fit together perfectly. It cleans up perfectly with isopropyl alcohol.
Where the 2 screws go thru the plastic hull are stress raisers. When a fish pulls on the rod the bending force will become focused at the screws. A spreader plate or large penny washers will reduce the focus a lot. Nice going Marty!
A heat gun and a few minutes and the PVC would have stretched and conformed to the Scotty mount. Thats how I made mine. Be sure to make plugs for them. I got into rough water and those holes get thirsty! four 3/4" holes is equal to a 3" hole in the yak! When I cut access points/hatches into my boat I use Little Tykes or Playschool toys in either white or a color to my kayak to make covers. You can also cut a PVC pipe on one side. heat it and flatten it between 2 boards to cut the shape you need. On my boat I marked the boat itself and etched in the measuring lines with my dremel etching tool. At the foot marks is a 3" black cross hatch. at the inch is a 1/4" black cross hatch and at the half inch marks is a 1/8" red cross hatch. Great videos, I did like when you had the poor man kayak though!
Thanks for all of your awesome video tutorials! I used your ideas from this video and combined them with Kayak Fishing Hack's ideas for DIY PVC rail accessory mounts to make a scotty type rod holder mount and a camera mount.
Recently got my first Kayak and loving it. Already hi-jacked a bunch of your ideas, so I thought it would be appropriate to thank you at some stage ;). Thanks for the awesome videos and easy DIY ideas. Always looking forward to the next one
really neat idea. I think another way to get all of the notches into the pvc that might be less involved would be to boil the pvc in water. this will make it very pliable. then you should just be able to push the rod holder down into the pvc which will make its own notches. anyway, I will definitely keep this idea in mind. great video marty.
Dig the MENSA lid Marty. You a member? I would believe it. Pretty cool. Love the low profile. I don't have enough flat gunwale to attach a "regular" Scotty. Great idea! Thanks for sharing.
You must use primer on PVC. You must primer both PVC fittings. The reason for primer is to clean the surfaces to allow the glue to adhere 100%. Now, primer comes in clear. Glue comes in clear also.
+Cameron Ballantine I'm guessing you're from Australia (me too) but they don't have the same flathead as us. They don't have dusky's or southern blue spots, they have flathead catfish in USA.
Ah man you realy got me in to kajaking, i just got a kajak drom my parents but i need to w8 till summer:( , im realy looking forwards to the summer now
Hey, could you set out on a mission? I don't know about the rest of your subscribers, but I would totally love to see you catch a Silver King! One Tarpon, I'm sure that would be exiting and something to remember for the rest of your life :)
Oh wow! Stupidly simple! Great Scotty mount idea! I had to laugh though. You cut the nub with snub nose pliers.... all the while you have a Dremel with a cut off wheel on it. 😁😁😁😁
I’m trying your Scotty mount diy but the 3/4” pvc doesn’t fit over rod holder. Did you use schedule 40? Did you increase the inside size of the pipe? Maybe Scotty has reengineered their products to be larger then the inside dimensions of 3/4” pvc.
Nice one Marty!! That "hyper-precise measuring equipment" of yours must cost a fortune! I really don't know how you manage to afford such equipment mate ;)
Ok. So I have the base in my kayak but the previous owner lost the rod holders. 😩 How can I make a holder that fits into the base? That would be a great video 😊
Great video Marty, I love your DIY videos very creative and detailed. I do have a question for you a little off topic, when you catch a fish do you bleed them out first to get the gamey taste out before you felt them? If so how do you do it. Thanks
And women wonder why we save strange things! Saved more than one project with something that I had pack-ratted away! Nice job Marty.

Great work👌 here’s a tip. next time. You can also heat up the PVC with a heat gun to in large the hole easier.
Caddyshack reference was a nice touch

zoffinger you should make a video of how you started your fishing channel and tips for beginners
brilliant!
