    Without out a doubt the strangest whistle I've ever heard. Almost sounds like a kazoo.

      And occasionally it almost sounded like a sliding whistle

    A hooter whistle had a stroke and created that

      The original design was made by Lunkenheimer lol

      Yup, for use as fire alarms.

      Maybe William Stanier (A famous LMS designer from the UK) fiddled with one of his "Stanier Hooters", created this abomination, and then mass produced it as... A joke?😂 (I know Stanier did not design his whistle, it just sounds like a Stanier hooter... Went insane?😂)

    Some friends and I were chasing 1309 during the parade of steam at Cass that weekend. While driving back to Cumberland, one of them was watching some videos from POS and when I heard the mocking bird whistle, I turned to him and said “What was that?!?!” He told me he wasn’t entirely sure what it was other than the fact it was called a mocking bird whistle. Definitely the strangest whistle I’ve ever heard.

    Awesome catch!!! This whistle has been in the Cass vaults for years now….typically from my understanding, the pitch is controlled by a second cord. Artie Barkley used to run this (same?) Mockingbird on Shay #5 occasionally many moons ago….

    Is that your whistle, or does it belong to Cass? I think that particular "Mockingbird" whistle is the perfect size because its deepest sound resembles the N&W or C&O hooters. I wish we had one at the tourist railroad I volunteer at. I imagine it must be a thrill to play while you're at the throttle!

      As far as i know, it does belong to Cass or the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad. I really like it, it's very unusual but a lot of fun.

    Sounds like a sliding whistle for a steam engine

    Second whistle sounds beautiful. Cosby or a buckeye? Awesome sound. The mockingbird whistle is unique

    How does it change pitch so much?

    • @tomyrail7468
      @tomyrail7468 Před 2 lety +2

      is controlled by the driver whos pulling the whistle cord.

    • @tomyrail7468
      @tomyrail7468 Před 2 lety +2

      if is pulled way too hard, the whistle will tend to squeal or if is pulled too quick then it will. but either that is how they can squeal whist;e

      The original whistles were made by Lunkenheimer for use as fire alarms.
      It is a single chime whistle with a slide in the bell that is controlled separately from the whistle cord. The following video is the best visual explanation I could find.
