      @@ryanbrown9102 I agree that the ratings are disappointing, my tastes line up with Tom's to such an extent that there has only been about a 1.5% difference in how I had expected a game that he reviewed to be and what I actually experienced.
      However, this is still just their subjective opinions. I have the game and have a couple of games played and enjoyed it so far.
      If your opinion lines up 100% with these reviewers, don't buy the game.
      As for your specific questions-
      The excitement built over the course of the game for the 2 we have played. I felt much more excitement as the beast when moving in for the win. I pulled this off with my last card of the last round to make the final kill. I lost the first game as the hunter and it did feel frustrating but I felt that was some 'first game blues' rather than the game itself.
      I didn't have any confusion about who hunts who. The hunters are after dangerous and smart quarry. I felt like this was fairly realistic. If you are hunting pigs or bear with a spear or bow, there is a fair chance of the tables turning at some point.
      Fun is pretty subjective and for me, sometimes it takes a bit for the game or strategy to click. For Beast, I had a lot of fun even while frustrated trying to maneuver and mislead while moving in for the kill. Hoping that feeling is present when I go back to hunting for the next game.
      I was really hoping that Tom was going to love this one and to be honest, if I hadn't backed it, I probably wouldn't have bought it based on this review. I am glad that we backed it and I am hoping that this will go into the 1.5% of games that I disagree with Tom about but no matter what, it will still be time well spent as we figure out whether or not we like the game!

      We have so much fun with this game! The beast can easily go hide after an attack even though the hunters know it’s close. That’s part of the tension! Also they know the Beast can attack them which is not a bad thing even though the dive tower seems confused.

  • @ras906

    Definitely feel like this game (like the devs and rulebook say) requires multiple plays before both beasts and hunters know how it works and you find this game has as much fun complexity as something like spirit island.

  • @PRC533

    After playing I think the hidden movement aspect is just part of the game and not the entire point like many in the genre are. The hidden movement simply allows the beast to move around to objectives without being surrounded immediately by hunters. Plus, the very strict time limit on the game means that even a turn or two with the hunters trying to guess where the beast it can matter. I do think playing the beast is a significant challenge to do well, which is something I can appreciate.

    I'd actually compare this game to Inis (which I think Tom also doesn't like). It's about the drafting and card play of a small deck of interesting action cards, mixed with your own personnel beast or hunter cards. Hidden movement is an aspect of the game, similar to how area control is an aspect of Inis. I'm not a big hidden movement fan, but I really like this. I'm not a big area control fan, but I really like Inis. I'm a big fan of card drafting and clever combos, or logical puzzle (like figuring out where the beast is or how to corral it). If you like that kind of thing too, you'll probably like this.

    I think this is one of the most interesting hidden movement games. I’ve played fury of Dracula, Mind MGMT, sniper elite, and Whitehall mystery, but this is the most interactive. All the other hidden movements are just someone hiding, playing a somewhat boring game of just moving… the other people are just looking for them and players get annoyed with constantly asking “are you here” and the hidden player saying “no”. This game has player interaction galore and allowed for tons of different strategies. We also had an easy time finding the beast…. For the first couple games. Then the beast started drafting more of the movement cards and now the beast is zooming across the map and no one knows where he is. And we love that the beast reveals all the time. It makes the game more interesting than just “I moved 2 spaces”, “I search this space, are you here?”, “no”, “cool…”

    • @ssojw
      @ssojw Před 5 měsíci +3

      This is the second bad review video I’ve watched and in both videos the same thing has been said - the beast is revealed when it attacks so the beast’s location is always known. So, two questions for me:
      1. Why are they continually attacking as the beast? I’ve only been playing the 2-3 player games but the objective is usually to eat settlers. You can eat animals for grudge tokens but it isn’t necessary. Yes it unlocks abilities and allows some beast talents to be played but these aren’t needed to win and you know the consequences of doing it.
      2. The rules say, multiple times in different highlighted boxes, don’t make attacking the last action you perform. Attack, reveal, then move. A lot of attack actions let you attack and move with the player choosing the order. Then you can play another action to move again. This often gets you two or more squares away from your revealed position. Revealing also discards your previous trail giving the Hunters less chance to find you.
      The Hunter need to either find and follow the trail, leaving the settlers vulnerable and even then only reveals you if they search on your location; or they can guard the settlers given you free reign to strike elsewhere.
      I do appreciate the seer Huntress can make this more difficult but if you find this play as the frog and confuse her with leaping two spaces and showing no movement cards!
      I don’t know for me, I played the Beast more like an assassin, setting up the strike, making the kill, then darting away ready for the next strike.

    the criticisms seem a bit weird tbh:
    there is a sword token, but when have you ever seen a wolf with a sword?!
    or
    you have to put down a footprint token but you have to rake through all the tokens for the one matching your beast?!
    its a token demonstrating damage thats fair i have never seen a giant magic demon wolf so it doesnt break immersion.
    You could just use any footprint token does it really matter that much?
    Its pretty clearly a board game that has hidden movement mechanics sure but id just view it as what it is hunters tracking down a beast to kill, sometimes they will stumble across footprints or hear distant screams from villagers that give away the monsters position.
    I feel this is as close to a bg version of Evolve that we will ever get and im here for that.

    I've played games of Fury of Dracula where Drac just manages to continually outwit and avoid the other players, and the game takes such a long time for it to be mired in that. It loses a lot of the tension fast. It kind of seems like this mitigates that to a degree, making the hidden movement more temporary and just enough to give the beast an edge, but still forces conflict and encounters in a relatively quick timeframe.

      When playing Fury of Dracula I always felt that the player playing Drac, most of the time that was me, should play more like a Dungeon Master in a Roleplaying game. That is play with the primary goal of giving everybody a good time.

    I am really interested in giving Beast a go. Dice Tower compared it to Fury of Dracula, which in my experience can become absolutely miserable and utterly boring if the hunters can’t find Dracula’s trail early enough. The biggest selling point for me in Beast was the fact the beast has to reveal itself if it wants to pursue its own objectives.

      Excitment? I feel like this game is so mysterious and has great atmosphere. I feel really tight and scared. Both as the hunters and the beast. I feel like every action matters. Also I love this games tug of war. Sometimes the beast is on top and feels unstopable. But the game state is always shifting so in a few rounds the hunters are now feeling like they have the upper hand.
      What do you mean? Does it even matter? For me the game has perfect theme, where the beast is just trying to survive so he does what he needs to do (kill humans who invaded the island). The people are scared of this mysterious beast that is trying to kill them so they feel need to defend their self.
      This is my favourite hidden movement game. (For the record I have only Mind MGMT so that is not hard to be the best). I love Mind but this game is more dynamic and action packed.

    I do not feel either this review serves justice for the game. However I get that it was simply not your cup of tea. I also got hyped about the hidden movement aspect first but owning both FoD and Mind Mgmt I started to highly doubt whether I really need this in my collection. However after watching further gameplay videos about it I can fully agree with others that hidden movement is just one part of this beautiful design and not the main dish. I will definitely buy it as I am big fan of the art direction, the drafting mechanic and the fact that the Beast is just so big and its actions are so outrageously aggressive that it cannot hide his trail well. This direct approach is definitely something new and I am really looking forward Studio Midhall upcoming works.

      @jenius00 Před rokem

      I was wondering how much not knowing the Evolve design but knowing hidden movement design had an impact on their play. I didn't notice them mention it, but my understanding is the imperative for the hunters to hunt is the Beast starts out weak and at a disadvantage but as it powers up it swings to having the advantage, so initially the hunters are trying to track and slow it down while they have the advantage and as the game progresses they have to switch to be more defensive and hidden movement is much less important, as it was in Evolve.

    • @jenius00
      @jenius00 Před rokem

      However, if that is the design, it's clear it didn't get communicated well through the rules and mechanics. Games don't need to hold your hand and tell you how you ought to play the game, but if the core strategy and game arc don't click after a first playthrough, some guidance is probably necessary. They mentioned there was a lot to do, but not a lot of apparent reasons to do it. Does that mean its bad design full of meaningless actions, or an opaque design with difficult to discover interactions and implications?

      While they all can do a little bit of everything, each hunter is a specialist in one thing, their unique ability card leans into this and the upgrades (4 unique ones on each hunter) let them get even stronger at that thing and help them do it more efficiently, what's even more interesting is the synergies and different team ups between the hunters.
      Beasts are even more different with their 4 ability cards (some unique, some let you do similar things to other beasts but differently) and 6-7 different upgrades (1 of which is the same (more damage) but rest are either unique) which allow you to focus on specific playstyles, summons also have their own special abilities in addition to moving and attacking.

    • @markmorris2856
      @markmorris2856 Před 8 měsíci

      Yer not much reviewing in this review and seems they played once only. There is alot of variance between the beasts, we actually played where the beasts abilities were revealed as they were used which was really fun. The charcater mostly do the same things but have one unique ability and some upgrades that generally specialise them more. Lots of discussion is had where the beast is etc and managing your actions can be difficult getting less and less options whilst the beast has a few more than you. The card colour mechanic is mostly to stop player hoarding all the same sorts of cards during the draft like getting loads of items etc and it usually makes you limited to 1 move and attack combo per player per round (in 4 player). As you get to know the beasts and decks you can contemplate when is good to attack or is the beast using minons to kill the objectives or is pouncing on the players. The hidden movement was also used alot in our games and a tactful players makes it difficult as the beast and doesn't just travel in a straight line or make obvious plays straight for an objective. I really enjoyed my play throughs so far but one of our players wasn't massively keen thinking it felt slow and unrewarding despite them on the winning team. There are a few things I thought could be improved, you attack a beast and then it can just attack you back and kill you when you are hunting it and also it doesn't seem like they have much health but then had they more health they would be hunting the hunters. I felt some rules were unclear but after a second playthrough I think we have everything nailed. I will say in this review the sword token represents ancient power, its not a sword it's simply as representation of power gained, then to say the tracking tokens were annoying they were monster specific is the exact opposite complaint of the sword comment. Something not malentioned at all is the quality of the game, most is really good , some of thr boards did have rough edges I could see getting some damage over time and if you get the retail version you get card board pieces with really poor quality standies. The acrylic versions look a hundred times better but most won't have got those and makes it sad that wasn't the quality in all the copies. In terms of balance I've read alot of comments and most seem to think it's very balanced but also I'm seeing most people saying the hunters won. In our games despite the beast achieving end of round goals and doing well they still lost on time. It seems very difficult for the beast to win , two things I would change is the death system with respawning, maybe even permanent death of players but have the beast only attack players from being hidden and not a counter attack and the limited time for the beast to win because they aren't dead so how did the hunters win. Overall that's a quick review of my own. I'd give it 7.5/10 I really enjoyed it but I can see it being a game that gets some house rules and I wish there were a few more action cards particularly for movement.

    I havn't played this yet, but I love Fury of Dracula ... BUT: I've seen the game fail because a at-least-semi-competent Dracula combined with new-ish vampire hunters ... can make the hunters feel like they have no way of finding Dracula ... while in fact he's right next to them. It can "feel" very unsatisfying for players unexperienced with hidden movement games ... amplified by the playtime.
    I'm really hoping that this game might serve as a bridge to get some people into this category of games. (Mind you: Not as a gateway game to modern board gaming ... only for the transition form other genres of board games.) How should I put this: Thematically it might be similar to Fury of Dracula while avoiding those phases "without a clear direction" for the hunters.

    Dear Dice Tower, Thanks for the video!
    I like hidden movement games. Fortunetaly did not play FoD (and already out of stock for a while), but I've played Sniper Elite and Specter Ops (have them both with expansions) and I love them. SE is one of my favourite games. When I saw a video earlier about Best and also read that a local distributor decided to translate this game and bring to the shops then I was in. I'm not sure about that now. I could be wrong, but probably Einstein said "The only source of truth is experience", so I'll definitely have to try it and see if I buy it.

    Don't agree at all. The most interesting game that I played in the last year. And when I play with my friends or in the new companies I find that everyone is getting pleasure and some sort of excitement. Rulebook is ok, art is great, most the of people around me don't compare games - so, no 'dracula' mental trauma. Great wooden peaces and maps. Hope for the extensions and other projects of this studio!

    It's baffling to me that people are personally attacking their opinions. Would you want them to lie and say this was the greatest game ever and then you buy it and you find the same flaws that they did. What would be their motivation to do so? Another commenter questioned the amount of times they played this game. I think you can get a strong sense of the game from one play especially when you have a great deal of gaming experience. I have personally never played a game a second of third time and had a huge variance in enjoying that said game.

I own and played a lot of Mind MGMT, Beast, Sniper Elite, and WhiteHall mistery and Beast sits in the top with Mind MGMT. Both Mind MGMT and Beast are my favorites games in the genre. Mind MGMT is more of a deduction game while Beast combines a great drafting system with hidden movement add to it. Beast is a clever design and very very fun to play.

    Like I always respect your reviews. Seems like you played game once and did not get a jist of it. All of the negatives you are mentioning, for me is like a aspect of the game that I love. I hate in fury of dracula when for an hour you cant get a feel where dracula is. Here you can always anticipate fight. Fact that you mentioning that its not good that you can play red or blue... its so balanced the way that you cannot do two things at once, that would give you too much of an edge. You have to draft for it and plan for it. And the fact like you said its not hidden movement cose you can always anticipate where beast is. This aspect of a game with plan of a drafting, knowing that beast is more likely in one or two spots is fckng amazing. Thing that game is so tight gives so much space for mind games. Srsly... play couple of times and you will understand that it is very good game. I can say that rulebook and especially translations of cards as shiet as .... i had to spend couple of hours on forums to actually understand what cards I can return to hand and what not with abiilities. But other than that... solid game.

    I backed this hoping for a shorter FoD. We played it and were really underwhelmed. Wasn't in the same ballpark as FoD even though they have similarities.
    FoD and sniper elite remain our go to hidden movement games. Hopefully they can make the dracula combat more strategic at some point. I liked the upgrading abilities though.

    Honestly it really feels like they did not understand the strategy of this game in the slightest. It becomes apparent immiediately when tom complains about the colors of the cards and not being able to play two red cards. It is so you can't attack twice on the same turn as the beast. Also I have no clue how on earth they were playing this game if the hunters always knew where the beast was and the hidden movement didn't matter. All in all a weird review.

    Leave it up to the "credible review" of dice tower to beat down an excellent game and completely miss the point of the entire game. Did you even try during this review? Excellent artwork, nobody wants 3 hrs of fury of Dracula anymore when it comes to hidden movement and nobody wants the same old come find me of mind mgmt. This game is clearly a game that breaks the mold and you guys did nothing to bring it justice. The game length is great because it doesn't bog down and it has an in game timer. The rulebook isn't excellect but apparently your grade school minds can't comprehend simple rules. It's literally all layer out step by step in the rules AND on the board. If you took the time to understand the prologue and what the thrill of the hunt is then maybe you might get it. Just because they use a sword to depict a power buff doesn't mean your character is actually using a damn sword. This game oozes with variety in animal prints, asymmetric powers and unique artwork which must've just slipped your mind somehow. Tom wont give credit to a unique theme that isn't overdone yet gushes about generic overdone fantasy, space and ww2 themes. Btw this isn't isn't boss battle chthulu death may die or kingdom death mister game so yes hit points need to be balanced and tight for the stakes to be high for everyone. You are specialized hunters! Not a boring investigator. When's the last time a dangerous animal being threatened capable of killing a human supposed to only stay hidden and let its habitat be destroyed?!
