Dangerous CROSSWIND LANDINGS during a STORM - MULTIPLE ABORTED LANDINGS

  • Finally I was able to film another Crosswind video at Düsseldorf. Almost two years after I made the last crosswind video the wind conditions were perfect for lots of crosswind action again. Check out the amazing skills of the pilots. Some of them realy had a hard time trying to land during these stormy conditions. We had wind speeds up to 55kts. I spend 7 hours at the airport and I was able to see 15 go arounds. Not all of them are shown in this video cause most of them already made a go around far before reaching the runway.
    Featured planes: Boeing 737, Boeing 757, Boeing 777, Boeing 787, Airbus A320, Airbus A330, Fokker 100, CRJ-900 and more.

      @StropSharp Před 8 lety +3

      +Andy Casbo I thought the turboprop at 6:13 did a damn good job, being its a lot lighter plane. I figure the bigger plane the easier to land....

    • @TE-oq1ze
      @TE-oq1ze Před 8 lety +1

      +C D Kennedy thats right, the bigger wing makes it easier and for example the A320 is more iffy to fly than the bigger A321.

    • @StropSharp
      @StropSharp Před 8 lety +1

      +TE9994 Well a prop plane would be like a tractor pull with the bite of the props, rather than a jet which pushes from narrow nozzles thus making it more of a balancing for airspeed. Incidentally I wonder what their airspeed actually is, it doesn't look like much.

    • @TE-oq1ze
      @TE-oq1ze Před 8 lety +1

      C D Kennedy the airspeed should be a little bit higher than minimum because of the possibility of sudden stall because of the windshear and turbulance conditions -> so over 132 knots (Airbus A330)

    • @TE-oq1ze
      @TE-oq1ze Před 8 lety +1

      A320 needs a higher speed because of the smaller wing

    The pilot of the first plane deserves some recognition for his amazing skills. As he nears the runways, rather than taking the dive in and making the plane land on one wheel, he essentially flys just over runway, then as he nears, winds pick up, and increases trust..looks like was attempting a go around until you play close attention, he essentially increases trust and continues to fly low still gauging the situation. he could done the land, but rather than stress plane. but he flew within meters, continued to test waters and just did a go around.

      @SuperRaptor4 Před 8 lety +2

    Vielen Dank für das tolle Video! Ich war an Bord der Condor-Maschine, die bei 0:44 die Landung abbricht und dann im 2. Anlauf landet. War ein ganz schön mulmiges Gefühl… in der Maschine hatte es bereits eine ganze Weile ziemlich gerüttelt und man konnte sehen, wie sich unten die Bäume bogen und das Wasser spritzte. Direkt nach dem Abbruch hat die Stewardess durchgesagt, dass der Kapitän aus Sicherheitsgründen die Landung abgebrochen hat und sich mit weiteren Informationen an uns wenden wird. Nach einer Weile hat sich der Kapitän dann gemeldet und mitgeteilt, dass eine Wind-Bö die Landung verhindert hätte, dass aber nach Aussage des Towers das Wetter sich etwas beruhigt hätte und wir einen weiteren Landeanflug starten würden. Hat dann ja zum Glück auch geklappt :-) Wenn ich jetzt sehe, wie das von außen aussieht, bin ich einmal mehr froh, dass wir einen so guten Piloten hatten!

    • @MD-md4th
      @MD-md4th Před 9 lety +10

      Russian pilots are almost all military-trained. The scariest approach I ever experienced was on Aeroflot into Baku, Azerbaijan. We were going in so steep it was crazy! My colleague was joking that he recently had a root canal and so his family would have good dental records to ID his remains. Then the pilot leveled it off and set the plane down so gently you could barely feel it. It was scary but beautiful!

    • @ThomasKossatz
      @ThomasKossatz Před 8 lety +6

      +Paul Sorry, this is a total new idea: Judging the skills of a pilot by nationality. Fact is that flight control often has problems with their bad english skills. The overall safety record of Russia is worse then of most western countries, mostly due to improper maintenance.

    • @PaulReinhard
      @PaulReinhard Před 8 lety +9

      +Thomas Kossatz Yes and i will explain why. Russia had it's own way of training pilots especially during communism. This difference in training, including more time spent on various skills, has an effect on the entire group as a whole. I have flown with many russian trained pilots and they rarely do hard landings compared to their american collegues who are discouraged from using too much runway length during the flare. So yes, you can group them together. In addition i very much doubt that pilots flying out of destinations not known for windy conditions are more skilled than pilots flying out of the scandinavian countries for example. It does not mean they are better pilots as a whole, just more experienced and skilled in certain situations.

      Al Wallace It seems unbelievable, but I guarantee you this is 100% true ! We often have those very strong weird winds in south of France called "Mistral", and it is pretty common ... Like 120 days per year ... We're forced to deal with it but that's not easy ...

      I'm not that far from you then (Switzerland) and I experienced the Mistral while on vacation in Avignon and Marseille, pretty gusty wind for sure ! But a 60 knots crosswind would be really, really dangerous and off landing tolerance charts. Geneva airport closed down for winds above 50 knots last year, during a winter storm. So I believe everything you said about being scared to death, but maybe "la sardine n'est pas aussi grosse que le port de Marseille" :-)

    They're all beautiful landings, but the one at 03:50 is very, very classy.

    2 years! i'm glad you were able to get some more, it is hard work because we don't get a lot of perfect conditions for it. A lot of the time it's windy and rainy at the same time :o) P.S Someone needs to tell the airline at 2:18 that their other reverser isn't opening and lol at the birds
