There are so many sitar maestros in India, many of them great. But the emotions and ecstasy and serenity produced by Pt Nikhil Banerjee simply unparalleled.
I had the good fortune to travel in the same first class train compartment with Nikhil ji and Swapan Choudhary, from Jaipur to Delhi in circa 79. I was a youngish foriegner already in love with classical Indian music and they were both my musical heroes, as well as having just watched them perform live in Jaipur. So I felt blessed when they entered the same train compartment. We got on well and chatted the whole way to Delhi where I alighted with Nikhil's contact details in hand. Shortly after I met at his residence in Calcutta when Anindo was there. Later I met up in London and saw a few wonderful intimate concerts there, all arranged by his brother in law who lived there. What a charming gentleman he was. The archetypal, unusuming Bengali intellectual artist. His music is eternal, unique and divine on every level, and so was he.
If the world is treating you badly, if you have had a bad day, if nothing is going right in life...come here and listen to this magnificent soothing sound that comes from the heavens. It will lift you up and heal all pains. That is a guarantee. Listen to this with simple head phones or ear phones.
You know what? Your guarantee is absolute. Innumerable times I have come back to this in bad days, and my soul has found peace. Sounds from heaven indeed.
I am listening Nikhil Banerjee play on Sitar for last more than 40 years. From the very start when he became famous. I am also a sitar player. I wonder how he produces such a sweet, bold and perfect tune on each stroke, whether it is in slow or fast mode. We are fortunate to have such a God Gifted genius to take us to sublimity.
As a sitar player you should know better. Once one starts listening to him there is no way one can switch on to anything else. Such is the quality of his music. Very sublime tonal quality one is transported to a very ethereal realm.
@@umawilliam6696 Well said. When someone does any work from his heart without expecting anything in return the result becomes so. In Bhagabat Gita, Bhagaban Krishna has also advised Arjun the same too:"Karmanya Baadhikarmastu ma phaleshu kadachana........." Pandit Nikhil Bannerjee also followed the same through out his life.
It all came from his heart. Not just left or right hand mastery. He has no answers till date. The greatest question ever asked to indian classical talent.
My sitar Guru took me to listen Nikhil da program at Shanmukhanand hall Mumbai when I was in my teen age 16 and now I am 69 since last 53 years I am in love with Nikhil da 's Sitar and his style and his very elaborative way of playing sitar. My sir J Vasantkumar breathed his last at age 89 in 2019 who was a sitarist always advice me if I took a career as a sitarist I must learn from Nikhil da the way he plays. I am very fortunate to listen him live and now on you tube. Nikhil da music soothes the soul, mind and heart. My salute to Nikhil da 🙏
I have listened to this recording few times now, and I don't think I have ever heard such an emotional Alap. It's as though Pandit Ji's sitar is weeping - not wailing, but weeping - with a lot of restraint and dignity.
Then you definitely have not heard ustad Rais Khans Rageshree! Although it has very bad sound quality but has enough clarity for one to give it a try! Also UVK's Rageshree has a totally different effect! All the three according to me have done different works of the same quality in this Raag. I feel that this Raag itself evokes some deep emotions when played with one's heart!
pt.NIKILBARNERJI was first class of sitarist, because his playing verry well, and deap,no other sitarist same nikilbarnerji in this world..His playing verry clear and sweet.
Pandit ji's alaap is so sublime and beautiful with some amazing phrases . You can see from just this alaap that this was a man of great stature ....arguably the greatest sitar player of all time ...
Nikhil Banerjee, in this piece washes away all the worry, distress and unhappiness of your life and brings in pure peace, contentment and joy ! Listen with closed eyes and be transported to the heavens !
Am I alone in considering this the greatest musical performance to date? I have heard a lot of other rock, jazz, metal, Grateful Dead Miles Davis and everything else. Nothing can touch this. It may seem weird and mystical, but I don't care, THIS is the best musical performance of all time! Please recommend something better than this. Greatest of all time!
This raag stands apart from all the other raag and the man playing this too has been in different dimension. He is mad mad musician without compromising a bit!!!
Nikhilda has created a vast span of Raga Rageshri. He has opened up for us tremendous treasure or shower of melodious phrases and lines in the raga one after another, each phrase beatifying the previous phrase or line and paving sonorous background for the next phrase or melodic line. This goes on intensifying listerner eagerness. He is totally drowned in the abstract mood of the raga. As if he has not kept anything for other artists to play or perform. Millions of thanks for loading the magnificent Raga. Purushottam Bakare from Nashik.
Very well put, Mr. Bakare. With every raga he does the same: leaves very little for others to do. Reminds me of what Schubert said after listening for the first time to Beethoven's C Sharp minor String Quartet: after this what is left to compose?
Every Time I listen to Nikhilda it appears I am listening for the first time. What a devotion and what a perfection. He has done everything possible throughout his life to make it a bit better through his devotion and hard work. It is really difficult or rather impossible to find a soul like this. Really god gifted. Ravi Shankar once praised his devotion, perfection and hard work. Perhaps that said everything about him.
Sorry Mr Chaudhuri, IMHO Ravi Shankar's praise matters little. Nikhil Banerjee in his 55 years on this planet took sitar playing to heights beyond that reached by anyone else, which includes Ravi Shankar in his 90+ years. To display this simple fact, all one has to do is play them side by side.
It's not really the best comparison because Banerjee started learning sitar at the age of 5 while Shankar did not begin his learning until he was 18. There's a lot to be said about the compounding effect of the learning curve especially when you start learning at such a young age. That aside, I still agree with you that Banerjee reached a greater height in his shorter career than Shankar did.
Truly one of the most beautiful recordings I've heard in recent memory. The ebb and flow of the playing here carries such a strong feeling, I'm tremendously moved and humbled to listen to it.
