  • Kristen Stewart and Katy O'Brian have crazy chemistry in the lurid noir romance "Love Lies Bleeding," and our dear friend Katie Walsh from Tribune News Service helps out with a review. Director and co-writer Rose Glass follows up her mesmerizing debut, "Saint Maud," with a film that also explores the extremes to which women might go in the name of self-expression. Stewart stars as the manager of a seedy New Mexico gym who's transfixed when O'Brian's aspiring bodybuilding champion blows through town. They fall hard for each other, but will their dangerous pasts keep them apart? Co-written by Weronika Tofilska. Co-starring Ed Harris, Dave Franco and Jena Malone. Playing in New York and Los Angeles starting March 8 before opening wider March 15.

      This film is actually the better version of Bound. It has the "U-Haul lesbian" aspect, but it does it a lot better. The circumstances of the plot make more sense, and the women are neither girl bosses nor villains. They are messy people who do messy things. Far more nuanced.

    Finally saw this today. Reminded me of BOUND in that "who's going to double cross who?!" way. I'm glad they finally put 1989 up on screen cuz I was worried there. The sound design had me twitching a lot.

    I love so much about this movie. The chemistry and performances from Stewart and O'Brian are of course phenomenal. Personally I'm just a sucker for movies with strong 80's vibes like this. I just wish the movie was longer. Some of the crime elements surrounding Ed Harris' character could have been fleshed out more.

    Always welcome Katy's presence, her insights & sense of humour; "Love Lies Bleeding" has just arrived in our humble burgh--amazingly--and we'll have to check it out. Sounds like the film Drive Away Girls aspired to be--kinda/sorta---though "Girls" emphasized humour over violence---a kind of Pulp Fiction wannabe--but fizzled. "Bleeding" sounds darker, more original stylistic & dramatic depth, and impactful. Great title! Fingers crossed!

    I sorta liked it. Great lead performances The film gets too weird in a cutesy way for its own good. Too many close ups imo. She'll improve as a director. Agreed that she has a style, and I would be interested in watching Saint Maud and future work. A 6.9 for me.

  • @PrincipiaDeCinema
    @PrincipiaDeCinema Před 2 měsíci

    I'm looking forward to seeing this movie, despite the fact that I really strongly disliked Saint Maud. I'm pretty baffled by how admired it is by many critics, but my theory on this is that the vast majority of film critics are so used to looking at religion from a secular perspective that the fact that Saint Maud fundamentally does not understand religion doesn't bother them.
    I'm an atheist myself but studied religion and philosophy as a grad student. I see this trend with any movie that approaches religious subject matter, meaning critics enforce secular values on the film rather than trying to understand it from a religious perspective. A recent movie that I thought really got religion was M. Night Shyamalan's Knock on the Cabin, and it was a very polarizing film specifically because it asked hard religious questions that religious people have to actually wrestle with. The book it was based on was obviously written by an atheist, and every change Shyamalan made to it was meant to take the story in the direction of a believer's perspective. He did a masterful job with that, and it is almost completely unappreciated by most film critics. (it's not a perfect movie, but most critics who dislike it very obviously do not understand it. You can tell this simply be reading their reviews and how often they say they don't understand certain choices Shyamalan made.)
    Saint Maud on the other hand is just about a woman slowly losing her mind with her mental illness explored through a religious delusion. There is no theology in it, like there is in Knock on the Cabin, or The Exorcist, or The Wicker Man, or Frailty. or most religious horror films. A person losing their mind isn't really scary unless you explore the idea of it from the perspective of not knowing what is true or untrue, and Saint Maud doesn't do that. Even though it is told completely from her perspective, I never once thought that what she was experiencing was real and not just in her head, and the reason for that is it wasn't grounded in any meaningful religious question, even though saving the soul of the woman she was caring for was right there. If it had focused on some kind of battle between Maud and the dying woman, there would have been something there.
    So, I am really hoping that Katie's claim that you have to "understand" Saint Maud to understand Love Lies Bleeding is completely false. I just think Saint Maud is a huge miscalculation of a movie, and mostly plays to audiences who have paranoia about crazy religious fundamentalists, which is a much more simplistic idea than most theological horror films explore.

    Bug fan of Christy but disagree on the coen brothers comparison just in so far as coen brothers are always making movies about people being punished for biting off more than they can chew, whereas noirs (closer to what love lies bleeding is) are people revealing their darker nature and the depths of evil they’re familiar with and comfortable inflicting.
    It’s splitting hairs but they’re opposites in that way
