Make ALL Your Dress Pants Fit PERFECTLY With This EASY Tutorial!

- In this video I'm going to show you how you can taper your pants, and yes I mean any pants. You can give a nice streamlined taper to your dress pants, your chinos, and even your jeans. The only difference that you will run into is the type of needle and thread that you will use.
I got these pants at Target for $9 on clearance, and luckily I know exactly when clearance will happen because I have the inside scoop. Keep scrolling if you want it too.
The first step that you want to do is get your supplies ready. We only need 3. We need some sewing pins, a flexible fabric tape, and a sewing machine. I saw a video of someone using a construction measuring tape, don't use that, it's not made for measuring clothes. You also want to make sure that you place your pins and taper on the inside of your pants. You can sew the outside, but you will run into a problem with sewing over the pocket and leaving a dimple on the outside.
In order to have a solid taper I used three pins in the side, and made sure to gradually ease my taper down my leg. If you start it off too aggressively then you will not like the results, trust me. Go ahead a sew a new straight stitch on there, and put a zigzag stitch over the edge so that it doesn't fray in the washing machine. Some people don't like that so what you can do instead is use pinking shears, which will cut a zigzag on the edge instead. Boom done!

Unbelievable. The internet is always surprising me... you made men sewing cool, fun, and simple to learn. Easy sub & like
That out of focus face behind the safety pin!!! Amazing!!! đ
i thought it was just me. scared the hell out of me hahaha
I kept yelling âWHAT IS THAT FACIAL EXPRESSIONâ đ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł
Need some "trust me ,I know ,I've done it "shirts đ€Ł .Thank you for going through it for us and saving us stress and activation lol
Thanks for being in-depth, emphasizing your past mistakes (those are the same ones I made). Other tutorials arenât truly beginner friendly sooo THANK YOU BRO
This man is single handedly driving up sewing machine prices.
Trying man, trying...
Awesome video, thank you, Iâve been hesitant to do this a couple of pairs of pants that I have because I donât have a lot of experience with a sewing machine. But watching you do it and explain it takes a lot of hesitation away, now I feel like I can do this. Iâm going to try it today, hopefully it works out, thank you again!!
This is your best video. More in depth and plenty of visuals. Kudos. One thing to add, I suggest you hold the two threads when you start sewing to avoid them bunching up in the bobbin compartment and freezing up the works, and start by manually moving the needle down into the material. After one stitch you can let go, back stitch and go for it.
All of your videos are dope, but this one seems like you took it up a notch. Very informative, now I know how to not have that dimple in my pants. Already went through 2 pairs...
I'm a professional seamstress, but don't have much experience with men's tailoring so I was wanted to refresh myself on a few principles. (wedding dresses are a completely different beast than menswear!) These are great videos!
Thanks for the awesome comment! Women's wear is definitely a different beast for sure!
Tapered my second pair of dress pants tonight. Thank you for your informative and helpful videos!
Heck yeah!! That's awesome to hear!!
Man THANK YOU! You saved my ass right before a family wedding; I've lost a bunch of weight since the last time I wore my suit, and this video helped me in a pinch. Miigwech from Canada âđŒ
Congrats on the new weight loss!!
Thank you, loved your presentation. I could understand what you were saying and didn't just half do the process. I have a machine but never learned how to use it. I look forward to watching your other videos.
I LOVE your energy. I wanna go home and sew a bunch of stuff now!
You totally should!
Man, I love you! THANK YOU so much!!! May the universe reward you for ever and ever :)
These tailoring videos are such a huge help. My wife use to do this for me, but since her stroke, she just doesnât have the motor control. Sheâs also not a very patient teacher lol.
Oh no! How is your wife doing now?
Your videos are awesome. My family thinks Iâm crazy wanting to tailor my clothes saying I should just pay for it. But teach a man to fish you know. Thanks for being the teacher đ
Your family is just jealous...
I really enjoy your videos, and learning from them is easy. Thanks for your time
This channel is so entertaining
Fact!
I just came across your video and love the energy you have to explain sewing. I have sewn off and on for years. Just a note about the pants, the way you altered them is great for anything that does not have a permanent crease in them. For pants like Dockers you have to take them in evenly from both the inside and the outside seam of the pant leg. Otherwise, when you put them on the crease starts going crooked where you altered them. Ask me how I know.
Of all the videos I have seen, this has been the most informative. Thanks a lot.
You're welcome!
Great communicator and helpful content. Thank you.
So helpful thank you!! I was able to fix a jumpsuit I had for a wedding. Perfect!
Your explanations are super clear and helpful. Thanks! đđœ
Glad you think so!
Hey Man, thank you thank you thank you. Not only do you make sewing easy with your great tutorials but your sense of humor is dynamite! Thanks! Just subbed!
Thanks for the kind word and welcome to the fam!
Amazing!
This doesn't feel like a sewing tutorialđđ
Love from India đźđłđ
Very informative and humorous too. Will be checking out more of your videos soon.
Just in time. Got my first sewing machine today xD
Good luck! Shoot me a DM if you get stuck!
Thanks for this great video. You actually make this more fun than I had imagined. Now I am full with confidence I can safely taper my pants.
Good luck and keep us updated!
Stylish D just changed my life. I literally just bought a sewing machine just to do my own clothes with these videos.
How has it been going so far??
@@StylishDTailors LOL!! I tore up my whole closet and tailored everything. I'm working on how to make costumes for my upcoming novel that will be released. I have no budget so you started me on how to make the clothes fit, next I am going to tryt o make post apocalyptic costumes.
So awesome to hear!! What's the name of your novel?
@@StylishDTailors It's going to be called The Policeman, post-apocalyptic Oakland, CA where there's one cop left who ends up helping to bring things back together. However, he kind of sucks at his job and needs help from the gang member LOL
@@StylishDTailors Want me to email you the first chapter?
Yo SD, I just want to show some love and say thank you for this channel. It only took me 2 videos to mash the subscribe button. I'm surprised that a channel with such great information, GREATER video quality, none of the annoying CZcams fillers and crap, and just overall awesomeness has such few subscribers. I'm brand new to sewing and will be getting my first machine this week (just ordered on Amazon), and I feel confident in tackling a closet full of clothes that look amazing but don't fit well. Seriously, thank you for this channel and your genuine personality.
Hey thank you for the kind words and welcome to the family bro! When you get that machine you're gonna crush it! I was in the same place as you, I would stumble across a great clothing alteration video and realize that was the only video they made that was related to that at all and it was annoying. I want to dive deep on this channel, so kick back and enjoy!
love your videos Stylish D. Please keep making more đ„đđŒ. This is awesome
I donât know why it took me 3 years to find your videos but i love them!!
Good luck, an important program for everyone who loves elegance, you have my respect
The safety pins shot was scary AF
Thank you...! You are the best. Love love your videos. God bless you.
Thanks man ! Got some 100% wool cold weather trousers for 4$ and they look great now đđ»
I've been doing alterations for my fiance's and my wedding outfits... I watched a lot of hard-to-follow videos for dress alterations. I am so glad I found your channel before working on my tux's alterations. Thanks for easy to watch/follow videos.
Umm CONGRATS on the marriage! Best of luck to both of you, and I'm glad this tutorial helped you out!
If you have any questions or need help don't hesitate to shoot me an email (in the description). And it would be free just so you know, I know some people charge for email replies.
@@StylishDTailors thanks! đđ»
@@StylishDTailors thank you. My tux pants turned out great. You have great energy and tips in your videos, they helped a lot while finishing the alterations. We got tons of compliments đ€
OK, I just have to say, I love this tutorial! Thank you SEW much! I teach sewing classes. I don't get into alterations because I've never done alterations which is different than sewing something from scratch. I want to teach how to do alterations. This is a great tutorial and easy to follow! Great instructions!
Youâre SEW very welcome!

Tight! I love your videos and I don't even sew!
Thank you, all the W's in one video.
Yes sir!
I feel like your fit test are the best lol. Your hilarious bro đ„ subscribed on the first video I saw from you. Thank you and I hope you continue teaching us đ
Thanks and welcome to the fam!
Awesome content! Learning alot!
Thanks!
This is so inderrated. I never skipped a part of this vid. Please make more vids đđ.
Glad you enjoyed it! There's plenty more on my channel for ya to enjoy!
The sewing machine defeated me for a long while. I can now operate it and this will be my next alteration I learn. Thanks for sharing.
Boom thatâs whatâs up!
Good video, dude. Thanks for the inspiration.
You're welcome, thanks for watching!
Dude your freaking awesome!
No, YOU are awesome!
Dude you are awesome, never watch video about how to taper pants and feel excitement, really glad youtube recommend me your channel.
Thanks for the kind words! It's really not hard at all, give it a shot!
Stylish Dad I got hands that attached to ass, but yeah I got some pants for practicing, but what I was really excited about quality of you videos and style of how you give present that information, itâs easy and fun to watch. Sorry for bad English not native speaker. Hello from Siberia :)
I'm glad you thought it was fun man I really appreciate that! My video "skills" have come a long way and I do things now that I only dreamed of doing even a few months ago. I was TERRIBLE when I started haha. And no need to apologize for your English man, it's perfect!
Time to skip homework and other urgent stuff to get my pants tapered for the flex, thanks SD
Arite .. didn't even watch this video yet but I've got plans to taper at least 5 pairs of pants and been waiting for this post haha
Perfect timing huh??
Hey, thanks for making these videos. I love outwear, sweaters and leather jackets. Can you do a video about tailoring these? Leather jackets cost around 400$ new; but you can get vintage baggy ones from ebay for around 50$. Knowing how to do this would save me so much. Keep up the good work.
You're very welcome! And outerwear is coming soon!
Love you!
Nice t shirt collection dude đ
Thanks!
Great bro..
Ur a great acter..
Been binge watching your videos SD. Gonna try tapering my pants. Wish me luck
How did it go?
thanks alot for mentioning the stitch , length of stitch needle size thread size etc this is the first video I found on CZcams explaining In detail
Yeah it's annoying when tutorials skip over all the important stuff isn't it?
@@StylishDTailors yeah true iam still learning ,when I saw every single detail I ran to subscribe
Awesome vids man.
Thank you I appreciate that!
Hey man, love your vids :) I got a sewing machine from ebay and found out that it is from the fifties :D But it still works perfectly fine
Thank you! And I've mentioned before that using a machine made in the last like 100 years is perfectly fine!
Those are the ones that can sew through leather. Don't complain. Be happy.
You are awesome. I could never find clothes that suit me because of my height 5â 8. Now i can save money while looking good thanks to you
You sure can bro! It's crazy how much of a game changer learning how to tailor is!
You think you have it hard at 5'8"? I'm only 5'3". Try that. Can't find clothes in my length, and 30 is too long.
I actually know what heâs talking about in the âWhy!?â part!
This is excellent! One question though, at 10:30 you come up to finishing the taper, do you continue to sew right to the edge or do you stop at where the original zig zag stitch is?
Thanks!
Right hand rule. Point your thumb in the direction of your pin. Your fingers should curl towards the side of the garment with less material, where I will be sewing. Works for me!
Thanks for the tip!
This Man is about to get this (me) 20-year-old dude to buy a sewing machine like your stereotypical Grandmother would have lol.
LOL!
This guy is good entertainer đ€Ł
Thanks I appreciate that!
I like your taper jeans tutorial and i gotta make one request: can you make a tutorial on how to sew stacks on jeans? I think that'll be a great test of your skills from the tack stitch to the flat fell seam for making perfectly stacked jeans! You can do it i believe in you!!
Let's just let that 'trend' die...
Canât say I disagree
Dude your videos are comedy đ
Oh he talks fuc***g awesome. I like his presentation.
Sew informative! I need to taper some scrubs and Iâve never done it before so this was very helpful.. I hemmed them two days ago and then the person is like..âuh, can you taper them? I feel like I am wearing bell bottoms!â đ€Ł so here goes nothing!
I always wanted to get into health care so that I could be the only one wearing perfectly tailored scrubs haha!
Well i get new one from my mother in law and girl is learning how to sew..
Youâre a cool ass dude , good video too! đ
j'aime bien !
Merci j'apprécie!
Excellent stuff. Remember to back-stitch at both ends :)
You think a man who who's the difference between a denim needle, universal needle and a Jersey needle would forget to back stitch?!
*I do occasionally actually lol .*
Haha. That unravelling feeling in public ain't fun at all.
No not it is not lol
nice one
Thanks!
I know you made a video about tailoring t-shirts but could you cover how to taper sleeves in a future video? Loved this video btw.
Sure, t shirt sleeves or dress shirt sleeves?
@@StylishDTailors 1 vote for t-shirt sleeves!
@@StylishDTailors what about dress shirts sleeves, still struggling with this
Haha this is awesome
You're awesome đ
No YOU'RE AWESOME!
@@StylishDTailors yes I am đ
Love your tutorials!!! I gotta a question though, how do i take in sweatpants that has like a joined rubber band instead of regular hem?
At the bottom?
And my mom always makes fun of me for move testing stuff, now I have proof as to why itâs important
Great video, would you use the same technique on pleated pants?
Yes you can!
Training gold - my friend đđœ
I love all your videos... I'm still just too scared to do this on my own... Too bad you don't live near me that I could get some private lessons
I've thought about it haha!
I love your tees man. Lovely. Where dyu get them?
Target
Thanks for sharing, Brother! Had my sewing machine for a few years and have only used it to shorten pants. Going to start trying some different projects.
Have you ever shortening dress sleeves by an inch and a half to 2 inches?
I have and it's definitely doable!
Thanks, this is very informative!
Just curious, I've never sewn before but I've see others use fabric chalk to mark where they'll be sewing.
So why use pins instead? 3:54
Thanks! And yes I plan on making that video in the next few weeks!
I don't use tailors chalk simply because I don't like it, but feel free if you want too!
No fan of skinny jeans, but this is a watch..
Hey SD, I noticed you locked in your straight stitch by doubling back at the start. Do you need to do this on the straight stitch if you will eventually do it on the zigzag stitch? Cheers
Correct. Lock it in at the beginning and end of both stitches.
They did this in the 60s....like my own lovley mother....lol
SD quarterbacking this to help me fix pants I need to wear in less than 2 hrs lol
Down to one hour, you get it figured out?
@@StylishDTailors I did! even used the shortening tutorial to follow up. Thanks SD!!!
I finally found it. Jeez
Found what?
Do you think its possible to taper a navy peacoat or would it be to thick for a sewing machine?
Good question, I'll look into it for ya!
You really look like Mr Propre
Yes. Yes I do...
I think I saw at target a cheap handheld sewing machine. Would you recommend it or nah ?
Absolutely for smaller projects like t shirts. Not so much for jeans though.
Camel toe...errr you mean moose knuckle lol
Awesome video
Lol true
ngl I'm not sleeping after that safety pin shot
It's the stuff of nightmares I know...
Yo! How do you know how much to take in for your pants? Thanks!
You measure and then try them on

That's the stuff of nightmares right there..

LMAO WTF BRO HIS EYES THOUGH!
I was looking to taper my suit trousers which are grey & brown checkered. Iâm worried if tapering will ruin the checkered pattern or not?
Depends on how aggressive you were with your taper. If it was gradual you shouldn't have too many issues.
Stylish Dad the ankles were slightly swinging, so I want to make it slim fit. Thank you SD for the response
No prob!
LMFAO 7:37 hardest Iâve laughed in a while
