    Sometimes I feel like I’m the only person who has a passion for learning about the American Civil War. My friends don’t get it. I’ve even driven 600 miles one way by myself to see a battlefield. I love your hat. (Kepi) I hope your interest in the topic still remains. I see the video is 2 yrs old. Great video 👍🏼

      Probably won't see this but check in your area if there is a Civil War Roundtable. I have one here unfortunately they only meet once a month during the week in the evenings and I work 2nd shift so can never attend unless I take a day off. There are history buffs of all kinds around but it is difficult to find them if you don't make an effort to look. Like you I feel like I'm the only one imn the world with an interest in History but that is only because Im around the morons I work with 40-50 hours a week.

    Used to have a single net shrimp trawler. Picked up artifacts in our net there a lot. Many parts of cannon balls and one whole one.
    BTW Black Beard supposedly buried treasure on Morris Island as well. ;D

    Actually the headgear you've got there is referred to as a forage cap. The kepi is a different pattern; it is a more rigid cap with a sunken crown, as opposed to the flat crown of your forage cap. Nice video, Wade!

    It's too bad the site is gone - I guess no matter what could have been done the effects of wind and sea on a sand, earth and timber structure would be almost impossible to save. I wonder about Fort Fisher at Wilmington, NC. At least it was destroyed by nature and not greedy developers.

    The US army actually came back after the war and dug up the bodies including Shaws, and moved them to cemeteries. Shaw has a grave and tombstone in Beauford SC.

    • @AlamoSentry

      None whatsoever. Wagner stood beyond the modern jetties on Morris Island in the Atlantic ocean. So Wagner, Shaw, and the 54th are underwater. No markers on the island. I went by GPS and period maps to pin point the approximate area.

    I saw a map that showed where battery wagner was and the assault happened on the southeast side. The map showed where the shore line in 1860s and in 2008 if its right a good chunk of the south east side is visible and walkable. Most is probably under water but Like you said so many hurricanes but they found burial site on folly island of 55th mass. During the fighting there was two creeks that ran close by its all one now.

    The Fort spanned the whole widthe of Morris Island. The moie shows the 54th attacking from the north.....water at their left.....while i think it actually attacked from the south, where the water would be on the right. Maybe logistics and permissions had something to do with it.

    • @galoon
      @galoon Před 2 lety +3

      No. There probably were some friendly fire casualties, but most were a result of Confederate infantry and artillery fire from Battery Wagner. The ground in front of the works was flanked by marsh to the west and the ocean to the east, so that only one regiment at a time could attack. There was no cover to speak of for the Yankees to use; the Confederates could hardly miss.
