I went on a field trip to Nickelodeon studios for my art school back in the beginning of 2017. We passed through the spongebob animation department and low and behold, half of the team was playing Smash Bros. Lol I *definitely* think they have their priorities in order

My main problem with newer spongebob is how hectic it is. The older seasons were pretty calm, with long moments were nothing would happen. But now, something happens every five seconds and it gets annoying to watch.

To be honest I think the newest seasons are horrible. Old Spongebob was a lot more calm and now the characters are jumping around the screen the entire time. I also think the facial animations are really bad.

Yeah, the newer stuff is definitely pretty out there (There’s a Sponge in my Soup, anyone?), but aside from Ink Lemonade, the new stuff is way more tolerable than before season 9. I can understand why some people would dislike it, and I do agree it isn’t quite the same as before, but given the widely positive responses to the newer seasons, whatever they’re doing is working.

Okay but guys, the difference here is that this person actually realizes that the newest seasons are getting better. A lot of the other people who make these videos have "given up on the newer seasons" so wouldn't know that the newer ones are getting better. Yes the aspect of making a "Why Spongebob is Bad" video is unoriginal, but this one is updated for the latest seasons.

Thank you. Everyone talks about the gross-out and messing with kids in Spongebob. They always talk about the live action butterfly, the mangle, the
splinter and the fucking toenail scene, but no one seems to mention the one scene that made me super uncomfortable: the end of the teleport accident episode. That horrifying mass of main characters stuck together... it gave my childhood self many nightmares.
Thank you for remembering that scene when no one else does.
But then... would it be good though for us not to remember?

i was born in the 1994 and i can tell, the show went down hill from a show you get excited, emotional and inspired has now changed to something that hardly feel interesting anymore.
@swad it I true that the quality decreased after season 4: BUT where have you guts been with season 10? Some creativity has been returning and the characters are being restored back to what they're supposed too. You can't make any final judgements on the shows true "downfall" until it finally ends. Newer episodes like "feral friends" are great if ppl would just check it out.

i heard a rumor a while back that i dont think i ever looked into but just took at face value, that one or a few of the people who worked on ren and stimpy moved on to work on the newer spongebob seasons.
i hated ren and stimpy (and other cartoons of its ilk) as a kid and i HATED the new style of gross-out humor that spongebob was taking on, so i just accepted the rumor as a truth because it made sense.
I thought that I was the only one who hated "Ren & Stimpy" ...and I'm a Gen-Xer...
I believe the reason for the decline was probably because of the writers who wrote the episodes during that period between season 6-9a. They most likely didn't understand why pre-1st movie episodes where Squidward suffers worked hence why we got Squidward torture porns. I also heard somewhere that during that period, the writers didn't have much time to make episodes because they were being pushed to make more episodes. This probably led to them not having enough time to think out the episodes which probably explains why a lot of episodes in that era weren't good.

S6-8 still had a lot of writers from the classic era. And some of the most hated episodes were written by these very same people, too.

The Squidward torture episodes are WAY TOO GRAPHIC to be written off as consequences of short schedules. They bothered to draw every tatter of nerve and flesh on his toenail as it flew off his foot, no way they were pressed for time too badly.
It was a matter of bad priorities and bad writers replacing great ones. It's such a sharp decline between S3 and 4 in quality. Spongebob hurtled right off a cliff under the new writers, and just kept falling for an obnoxiously long time, until maybe the last two or so seasons when the great writers came back.
I will never forget the time that my turned on the TV and Pizza Delivery was airing. The first episode I was introduced to this (was) great series and made me learn English first than Spanish by accident. Because Im a PuertoRican with an American accent.

Here are my thoughts on the different eras of SpongeBob:
Seasons 1-3 and the first movie were pure comedy gold
Seasons 4 and 5 were pretty good, a few duds aside
Seasons 6-9a were absolute garbage, with a few good episodes here and there
Seasons 9b onward and the second movie were awesome, thanks to the return of Stephen Hillenberg (May he Rest In Peace)

@@kaams224 I find the animation to be really enjoyable, finally they care about some of the most important things about a cartoon: the animation.
Season 1 animation was a bit boring, but I understand it because it was made with cell animation. Season 2-4 animation was really great. Season 6-8 was really meh in animation, it wasn't energetic, if you can't have good writing, make the animation look interesting.
Season 9-12 it's really great, I really like the animation and writing.
Spongebob died for me by the time it got to 2017.

For me personally, I would say the first couple of episodes in season 4 were amazing like pre-movie ten it was a SLOW decline in quality

since the latter half of season 9 it improved but its bad stuff from then is still there quite often and i am not a fan of the recent very exaggerated animated style often (it can be good at times but often is too much in your face imo.)

One thing is that after Season 9A, Stephen Hillenburg returned to the show, along with other writers from seasons 1-3, like Kaz. This is where the Post-Sequal era was actually Great. Now we have episodes like Sharks vs Pods, Mermaid Pants, Bulletin Board, MY LEG!, and so much more.
+Patrick Supreme-And while they weren't the only culprits, two of the biggest people responsible for the truly DARK AGE of Spongebob belong to Casey Alexander and Zeus Cervas. Together, they brought some of the worst, most rancid, and despicable episodes in the entire history of the show: That's No Lady, Fungus Among Us, Deuces and Dragons, Squidbob Tentaclepants, and one of my personal "favorites," Squidbaby. It should be no surprise to anybody that Casey Alexander moved on to create Uncle Grandpa. Also almost equally unsurprising, Zeus Cervas joined him. . .Not only were this duos' contributions post-movie lazy, definitely brought a lot of the "Flanderization" and severe mental retardation of ALL the characters, but a lot, too many of their episodes, such as Squidbob Tentaclepants and Squidbabby are just so legitimately fucked up and disturbing. And they contributed to over 100 EPISODES during their time post-movie. . .I have no idea why they were allowed that much prominence and control within the show, even when it was finally clear that they shouldn't be there. . .
However, there is a ray of light after 2015. Stephen Hillenburg was brought back to the show. Casey Alexander was no longer involved with the show after he moved on to Uncle Grandpa. While Cervas has come back briefly, he has a much limited presence than he did from 2005-2009. Kaz came back and the show cleaned up shop and hired some new, actually decent writers. So Spongebob is in a much better place than what it was, I just hope since the tragic death of Stephen Hillenburg :*(, the show can still keep up pace from what he set up-and as long as the show limits and blocks Alexander and Cervas as much as possible, the show will be all the better for it.

the toenail scene gave me a lifelong phobia of anything to do with toenails/fingernails
when spongebob ripped a clam in half and shattered it to pieces i knew the show wasnt itselfe anymore. the most previous refference to such clams in the show portrayed them as babies/baby birds.

I can’t stand new cartoons. The animation style is so lazy and characters are all immoral. Spongebob was amazing because the sponge himself was very silly and outrageous, but he also had a job that he cared deeply about and would stand up for himself and his friends when push came to shove. The new cartoons just take those gross and extremely foolish moments from spongbob and stretch them to entire shows which are full of nonsensical flashes of content to appeal to the shortening attention spans of 2000s children

i mean, ren and stimpy was from the 90s and that was one of the most ‘immoral’ cartoons ever. there’s always gonna be slapstick/gross-out shows in every era, just are there will always be heartfelt, wholesome shows.

Yeah, because shows like Cow and Chicken and Ren and Stimpy taught great life lessons, huh? one theory i heard recently which could explain spongebob's downfall was one that's very deeply rooted in the show. before the show even made it to air, nickelodeon wanted spongebob to be a kid, not an adult with childlike qualities like stephen hillenburg wanted. so once hillenburg had less of an influence on the show, nickelodeon stepped in and said to the writers "make spongebob more like a kid", so then they made spongebob cry a lot more and generally just act more like a kid. this is also likely why kamp koral exists

I agree, the episodes since the second movie came out have definitely been an improvement, I guess many still have a bad taste from the terrible episodes from before the second movie and haven't given the new episodes a chance yet.

Whats cringy about it?
What caused the fall is that Nickelodeon wanted more episodes despite Stephen Hillenburg wanted to end the show so it didn't jump the shark, but Nick saw the show as their cash cow. That's what caused the downfall.
Now can you talk about what caused the downfall of the Fairly Oddparents because despite its problems making the show unwatchable and painful to sit through, it's still on the air and every time it gets renewed, it gets worse and worse and plus it's downfall doesn't get talked about that much compared to Spongebob. Also, while to some people, not everyone, but some, they let Fairly Oddparents slide despite its problems and with Spongebobs problems, they just grab their pitchforks and torches and go ballistic and say is the worst thing in the world. It's like this, see Timmy Turner get tourchered every day with a missirble life and in every episode, the whole world is out to get him including his friends and family, as it happens in every episode, give Fairly Oddparents another season and a cookie, see spongebob say, crying solves your problems in Stcuk in the Wringer, despite it being only one small scene not meant to be taken seriously, crucify Spongebob and claim that One Course Meal and everything from Modern Spongebob is worse than 9/11, the haloccaust, Adolf Hitler, and Hilary Clinton combined. All I can think of what caused the Fairly Oddparents to being a really good show I used to watch alot a kid to being one of the worst of the worst to come out of Nickelodeon are either Nickelodeon themselves for choosing to keep renewing it, or the fans for forcing Nick to keep it on the air as whenever Nick attempts to end the show, the fans will go balistic and force Nick to keep it airing? And I think it's the right time to get to the bottom of this.
Jonny Boy the downfall of fairy odd parents isn't that bad for a show that's 17 years old SpongeBob got uncomfortably bad in just 8 years when the episode to love a patty aired it's impressive fairy odd parents didn't get much worse and in 10 years the show still was watchable it only become terrible in 2014 when a new character was added but it never got to the levels of modern SpongeBob where they are pushing too far.
Jonny Boy Not saying that FOP is bad or anything but I think the reason people talk more about Spongebob's problems is because more people grew up watching Spongebob. And it would make sense as Spongebob is considered more of a successful show.

But Fairly Oddparents, at least to me, it's downfall is much worse because at least with Spongebob, i was able to stick around with it more because what made FOP worse was how high pitch and loud the voice acting got, how overly hyper and in your face it got, how the running gags have gotten more noticeable as they've become a much more bigger focus for humor which gets very annoying and repetitive, how overly cheesy the dialog has gotten to the point where it just feels awkward and not right compared to the first 5 seasons, and how repetitive the Timmy Turner torture has gotten and the worst part is it happens in every episode, Timmy Turner is the main character meaning we're supposed to look up to him and root for him but every time he's on screen, the whole world is out to get him. Give points to Spongebob because Squidward is not the main character meaning Squidward getting tortured doesn't happen in every episode making the show feel not as repetitive and mean spirited compared to FOP, and I feel the repetition is worse in FOP in terms of storytelling and humor from telling the same formulaic plot in every episode to repeating the same running gag hoping you get a laugh, the voice acting is much more painful than Spongebobs, more obnoxiously hyper than Spongebob, and the dialog is much more forced and cheesy compared to Spongebob as Spongebobs diauloge feels natural and passable. And FOP's problems, at least IMO, came in season 6. While it was nice to see more episodes, with these problems I've mentioned, something about the show doesn't feel right compared to the first 5 seasons. Then when season 7 came in, the problems were still there and to me, I've gotten sick of the show, plus I find Foop to be a forced and in your face gimmick to bring in ratings, because everything has gotten to annoying, loud, hyper, cheesy, in your face, repetative, and mean spirited. So, i stopped the show during the first quarter of season 7 and I never saw another FOP episode again. That's why I FOP's decline is worse than Spongebobs. Plus, the hate for SB nowadays has gotten old and way too overly exposed making the hate feel annoying. Plus, there are good episodes in SB's seasonal rot that at least exist compared to FOP, especially in season 7. FOP had some I remember liking in season 6, but in season 7, i wasn't able to find any good episodes. And no I never finished season 7, nor did i ever see seasons 8-10.

One thing I hate the most about the new spongebob is that some characters will completely forget about other characters. There's an episode where Larry the crab literally says: "Who are you?" to Spongebob. It makes me so angry that there's no small chance of consistency between episodes
Basically stephen wanted to end the show because he didnt want the show ending up turning stale just like any great show would. But it was too late, spongebob was and is still their cash cow.

I feel like the newest episodes has much more childish animation style (with how characters act unrealistically) and there is a lot less humor for people that are teens and older and it’s just child humor.
I think Season 4 is severely underrated, and I think it should be included in the classic era

Is no one going to talk about the scene in Whelk Attack where Sandy borrows SpongeBob and Patrick's corneas with a close-up of Sponge and Pat's eyes without their irises? That was just terrifying.
In my opinion it was gradual decline from season 6-8, then a huge drop to season 9, and it just got worse from there.
Nowadays the animation is far too exaggerated. It's like a bad Tom & Jerry now. You can't even focus on the plot because of how terrible it looks. I don't know if the cast feels the same way, but I hope they do. Spongebob used to be my favorite show to watch. It's gone to shit.
billie-ache eyelash I feel the show is too bright now I miss when it looked neutral because it was a relaxing & funny experience I also preferred the use of setting in the earlier seasons. By the time it got to season 7 it was like oh god another episode at the Krusty Krab they needed to vary it more.

The creator. We all should know this. Stephen hillenburg left the show. I think it was in the start of season 4 or the ending of season 3. Tell me if I'm wrong. Anyway, You can not have a great show without the creators. Those are the people who give the show everything. They made it and it's their world. No wonder you see SpongeBob today not being sooo good. Argue with me if you can but the new episodes of SpongeBob are just not good and their not as good as the 3 season's were. After the creator left, That's when it lost its SpongeBob magic. You can't just expect a show to still be good when your creator has left the show. Go look at Adventure Times creator, He left the show, I'm not Kidding, look it up Bros. That's why you see the show adventure time not getting so much good episodes lately. You might disagree but when the creator leaves the show. That's bad news. Another example is Clarence creator, he left the show because of an incident at cartoon network. Take a look at the beginning of Clarence, The first few episodes were charming and actually funny. Now compare that to the latest episode's, Sumo is a jerk to Jeff and not in a good way, Clarence is really dumb and annoying. Not in a good way either. You see. When you start losing people who worked on the show, Your show starts to suffer, and when your show starts to suffer, We suffer and the show's not good anymore. Another, Another example is the Simpsons, the early season's were Gold, That's because everyone who worked their were committed to it and loved it, That's when later in the seasons, writers left, Then problems came and that's when the Simpsons came down hill. Go search up The fall of the Simpsons on CZcams and you'll see. I know Matt groening still works on the show but that's just another example of how a show can go downhill when you have a creator but most of your writers are gone and trust me, No one can replace them, No one can replace anyone. It doesn't work that way. SpongeBob will continue to go downhill if it doesn't stop and the new episodes aren't working out either. This is what happens when you fail to stay committed to something. It's ruined. Hope I explained enough. Feel free to add stuff or give your reasons why.
This opinion is exactly why I made this video. It's too easy to just accept that Hilenburg is leaving is the only factor behind SpongeBob's decline. Yes most shows live and die alongside their creators involvement in it but there's always more factors, as was the same with The Simpsons and Clarence.

I think it's because after Season 5, the new creators stopped caring for the older audience and started to focus on 6-11 year old humor. Same reason why SML overuses the Jeffy puppet.
At first they intended to end the series after the movie, but nickelodeon have noticed that they still make money of
spongebob squarepants as you may have notice cartoon network ended many shows BUT that is because they didn't want the show quality to fall downhill.

Agreed seasons 1-3 were definitely the best and the first spongebob movie was a hit and I hope that they get their old habits back and put them into the newest seasons because those last few season were awful
I like how this video actually gives an in-depth explanation to the show’s downfall with good reasons, instead of just blindly hating on everything post-movie without watching any of it. It’s also good to finally see someone who likes season 4.
I think when spongebob started to really screw up was after the episode “Patrick the game” and after that, and especially now you can tell that the animations are a lot more wacky, and the characters are not really... well.......themselves

You're probably the first person who actually addressed the restrictions the show had early on.
Spongebob is seasons 1-3 and the first movie. That's Hillenburg's completed work of art. But then Hillenburg wanted money (who doesn't) so he let it go on without his direct creative control. I mean, he was doing everything at the start, even animating, and created the most magical world. So when he stepped back, it turned to shit. Yet to this day people generally don't care that it turned to shit, so it keeps getting renewed. It's a head scratcher!

Even when I was a kid I started to lose interest because the new episodes became more Gross 🤮 and visually disturbing. Like when spongebob fell in love with a Moldy Krabby patty.
