    I'm writing my masters thesis on the history of clocks and how they have changed our perception of nature, particularly how we don't see humans (animal bodies) as part of nature, so this video? Yes, yes, and yes. Punctuality culture and synchronised schedules have their advantages but also super dangerous for our cultural understanding of time, nature, and our own needs

    I honestly think early morning jobs are bad for everyone. As a morning person, I also constantly feel cheated by early work schedules because my best, most creative hours are constantly at the whim of my employer. Literally everyone loses. If you're a night owl, your best hours are protected but you are constantly sleep deprived. If you're a morning person, you're well rested but constantly watching your best hours ruined by commutes, random meetings, etc.

      @vslifeofcycles5415 Před 2 lety +12

      You are so right! I am also a morning person, but I would rather start work at 10:00am so that I can actually enjoy my morning and get some things done before I go to work and get worn out. Granted, I would still want to be done by 3:30 so I can enjoy the rest of the afternoon too. The U.S. works way too much for anyone's good.

      @AhsanteB  Před 2 lety +8

      This is such a good point - commutes and first-thing meetings clog up the morning lark's prime hours! Another point for remote & asynchronous work.

      @@vslifeofcycles5415 Exactly! My current job starts at ten in the morning, which is great, but then I have to be there until six in the evening. My brain taps out at about three in the afternoon, and it would just be so great to only work when I am actually productive. Plus, having those extra hours in the afternoon to enjoy or do personal stuff, like errands or laundry, if need be would be fantastic.

    I'm a night owl and I'm pretty time blind, so for morning appointments, I will regularly be late, even though I will try very hard to be on time. It's just so incredibly hard to be exactly on time that early in the day. It's also very stressful if it's an appointment where I absolutely have to be on time and it will throw off my entire day.
    High school was terrible. Generally 3 out of 5 days, I'd be slightly too late. My school had the punishment that you'd have to be 30 minutes earlier the next day, but most my teacher just let me join their class and I never disrupted their lessons, so 🤷🏼‍♀️

    • @AhsanteB
      @AhsanteB  Před 2 lety +5

      Ugh - I dislike the punitive system around school lateness so much. Some students are really trying but it's so hard to be exact that early as a night owl! It's nice that your teachers gave you grace and let you join, a human touch

    YESSSS!!!! Amen….I believe 100% I could’ve done soooo much better in school if it didn’t have to be there at 7:05am!!! I mean do we have any idea of what time you have to get up to physically BE THERE by (actually slightly before) 7am!!! I mean WTH? I ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️your video!!

    My high-school was right next to a fraight train track that didn't run on a consistent schedule. Yet the train keeping kids from crossing the road to get to school on time wasn't considered a valid excuse and kids got detention for it. MAKE IT MAKE SENSE.

    Hey, now. I am with you all the way! I teach at a Middle School, and I am so annoyed by so much of the nonsense we do, like locking kids in rooms for being negligibly late. However, I absolutely love waking up before the sun, and I am sad that you called 7:25 am an "ungodly hour." It is my favorite time of the day. Lol! You were on your soap box, so I should let you express your feelings. I just had to remind you that some of us do love the morning. 🙃😉

    In my country we don't have the same relationship with punctuality the way US does, for example when you go to college or meet with friends, but being late for work is not tolerated by employers. Don't know if such mentality is imported from US or is a byproduct of capitalism getting introduced here, but honestly I don't see how being being late for a few minutes can somehow hurt the business. In my eyes, it's nothing more than an assertion of dominance in the manner of strictly controlling your time, even if a single minute is in question.

    By and large, you make great points. I just don't agree with your presentation of arriving late to a class. I think at college what you say is quite reasonable. However, I taught in an inner city high school. If I tolerated one student coming into the classroom after the bell, then the other students would decide that they could come in whenever they felt like it. Fortunately, our school had homeroom first thing in the morning. So, provided you made it to school in time for homeroom (or close), there shouldn't have been a problem getting to class on time. Again, in college, the student should have the maturity to take responsibility for figuring out what they missed. In K-12 public schools, someone wandering into class late is very often disruptive to the learning process and the ability of the teacher to instruct. Perhaps that indicates we should change the way we do public education. But those conversations have been happening for decades and nothing has really been improved. As you say, there's a certain mind set around these things (I completely agree with that and am on board with you there). But, my point is there are other "institutional" situations which make taking a more reasonable and laid-back approach to punctuality infeasible and counterproductive.

    • @AhsanteB
      @AhsanteB  Před 2 lety +3

      Thanks for your thoughtful response! I see what you're saying, and I think the fact that you had homeroom at the beginning of the day corrects for my main gripe - it's an activity where it's fine to trickle in a couple minutes behind. At my school, after about a week of homeroom at the start of the year, the start of the day was your first class. Once you've arrived at school, then yeah loitering between classes is a different issue - and the timing of the day is strictly planned so things can be orderly without needing grace time. And there's also the good point you make that once you're in college you are making your own choices, and that's a different dynamic than making kids go to grade school classes so there would need to be some strictness. But I am opposed to the punitive one-size-fits-all approach to discipline for the initial arrival time, which, in my case, didn't make any sense. I am glad that some school districts are moving gradually towards later start times!

    • @zapatafa
      @zapatafa Před 2 lety +2

      @@AhsanteB Thank you for your response. I totally agree with you. Too often a one size fits all approach is taken. Kids are late (or tardy) for various reasons. And definitely, in your case, I don't think it made any sense at all.
