  • This is an overview of the groundwork in the academic art of riding, and this video is meant as a rough guideline. Each of these exercises is made up of many education steps, so it's not recommended to skip any steps and start somewhere in the middle. I have given specific numbers to these steps, for the purpose of clarity, but be aware that educating horses is often not so linear.
Groundwork is an important foundation for the horse's education. Time invested here is time saved later! The horse learns to carry itself properly first, before it learns to carry a rider. Some horses cannot be ridden at all, or are in need of rehab, and the academic groundwork is a meaningful way to build up muscle, coordination and strength.

How do I teach my pony the school halt without him stepping back? He can bring his feet underneath himself, and then falls on the forehand. He cannot comprehend he should shift his weight. How can I achieve this?

To teach my horse the shoulder in, I was told to place my body near her neck and turn in a circle so the front half of her body has no choice but to follow me. But, I see here that the crop is used to touch the neck and you walk straight back in a wide circle. How is the horse learning to cross the front legs if you are not invading his space?
