Helen Mirren as Morgana was GOLD TIER casting
Merlin's final scene, and it ends so perfectly, his laugh is haunting as he disappears...he wins...he ALWAYS wins.
Revenge is sweet.
"Careful... it *can* damage your beauty. Alas."

Nicol Williamson and Helen Mirren were in a disastrous production of Macbeth as well as in a relationship. When they learn of each other being casted in this film and they have to play against each other, they each went to John Boorman to ask him to reconsider. Boorman used their mutual antagonism well for the film.
Notice that for this scene we never see them together. They might actually have shot this without the other...
And they became good friends on the set despite it.
That's what you call a genius director - choose your actors well so that you have to give as few directions as possible.
Well, what do you want? It was the Scottish Play, after all...
Well that's not the only time that's happened.I Caddy shack Bill Murray and Chevy Chase were the two biggest actors in that film but they hate each other. But they put their differences aside to do that movie like professionals.
Robert Addie had the exact gestures, facial expressions and emotional range as Sir Guy of Gisbourne in every episode of the classic Robin Hood series as he does here as Mordred.
Mordred didn't kill her because he's "confused". When he saw her aged appearance, he knew that she had cast the fog spell and therefore betrayed him (on purpose or not). He killed her because she was now a liability and he was a murderous psychopath.
Spot on she raised a venomous snake and she got bit
He also despised the aged Morgana. I think in the movie it is hinted they had an incestuous relationship.
@@TheVetoSkreeemer Hinted? She literally kisses him on the lips, lol.
He killed her because he was disgusted with her appearance. That's the entire point of the scene of her aging rapidly. The lust for young women in this movie is made perfectly clear earlier on and why Morgana wanted to keep her looks.
@@TheVetoSkreeemer yeah I kinda got the feeling it was a bit of both
Morgana merely gave lip service to the dragon's breath and never understood the power didn't have a owner..
She remembered everything, but learned nothing....Alas
A lesson that Voldemort failed to understand as well.
MERLIN: And by this ancient curse, I age you by 40 years! **zap**
MORGANA: Wow, I actually look pretty good older. And my range as an actress has improved as well!
MERLIN: Damnit!
"It didn't work?!"
"I still look fantastic at the age of 70, bizatch!"
i find it amusing that Arthur from the 'Merlin' TV show is the spitting image of Mordred from 1981
Ty for the lols.
One line in the commentary had John Boorman saying he hoped Helen Mirren did not look like Morgana when she was older. Well, she ain't gonna...
Fate Grand Order,however..
Not surprised Liam Neeson fell in love with her on the set in that outfit !
Ok, Morgaine, we get it, you vape.

Wow, I forgot about this great movie. Thank you!👍🏽
I see what Merlin did. Trick Morgana to age herself with the spell in order to confuse Mordred and drive him to kill her.
An excellent strategy on merlin part.
Also to get her to create the mist which gave tactical benefits to Arthur's army in the forthcoming battle.
I mean wasn‘t his motive quite obvious?
Merlin's revenge.
@Daniel Williamson Wow, you're such a genius! Nobody would have understood that!
This scene is unrealistic because Helen Mirren has barely changed in the intervening 30+ years since the filming of this scene.
it's more 40 than 30 years
id say 20 hehe.
Oh dear God... She's changed a LOT. Let's not pretend she still looks thirty. She's aged incredibly well, and looks fantastic, but let's be realistic.
@@Hibernicus1968 She has changed, but it's for the better. The lines and silvery hair she has now make her look more dignified. Plus her ability to immerse herself in a role has improved greatly - she has the rare skill of making the audience see what she wants them to see. She acts as though she's beautiful, and therefore she is.
@@Hibernicus1968 Let's not. :) We're talking about the magical realm of filmmaking here ...

Shame they can't make movies as good as this these days without cgi still a great movie
The rule of three comes crashing in, loss of power, loss of life, loss of legacy.
** No old ladies were harmed in the making of this film **
That spell is the same one used for the orb of Ozuvox in Ready Player One
Her armor hooo boy, that's so distracting, in battle that would be brilliant XD
Awesome!!
when an enemy urges and pushes you to use a weapon against them.....and you do it?? wow
"Sorry. I have this intense, irrational hatred of old people."
I love you, Helen.😍😍😍❤❤❤
After Merlin says, "Careful, it can damage your beauty." Does he say, "Come now?" I couldn't quite make it out. If he did say "Come now" was he inviting her spirit to join his?
No, he is saying "Alas," which means "what a pity." Basically he is sarcastically saying it would be a great shame if Morgana were to lose her beauty. The little chuckle he gives straight after "alas" is because he knows that's precisely what is going to happen.
@@chooseyourpoison5105 Thank you!
Morgana tricked Merlin into giving her the Charm of Making which she used to imprison him - and Merlin tricked Morgana into using the Charm of Making against him again which ended up destroying herself.
@@lacedemonians not against him, but as a way to restore her magical reserves. It did, but at the cost of her beauty and youth.

Anáil nathrach orth bhais betha, do cheol déanta (Serpent's breath, charm of death and life, thy omen of making.) I was the only one in the theater that recognized the magic spell.
Helen Mirren was Fiiiiiiiiine😉
What do you mean by „ready player one“ ? What about it?

is no one going to talk about how they put nipples in the armors? not just Morgana's, Mordred's too, wtf? xD
Not really. Things were more fun back then. Less uptight and Puritanical.
It is an extension of Morgana's sensuality and using desire as a force. Yet also not that big of a deal in that era. The film seems to capture that subtlety well.
Morgana's sensual issues...
Was Joel Schumaker an advisor?
0:55 That's Grand! :)
What's the music that starts up at 1:23? I've been looking for it in the soundtrack but I can't find it
It’s the music Trevor Jones composed for the film. Parts of it sound like the score for the Dark Crystal in places. One part of which was when the Skeksis General/emperor commanded the Garthim to find the Gelfling.
I've always loved this movie, but I did not remember Helen Mirren playing Morgana, I just did not like her at all, but it turned out to be the one playing Morgana.
00:29 Somewhere in 1999. The Undertaker is writing this down..
Lord Helen Mirren was a straight Fox back then
Smoking kills...
Yuri's revange 😆
Now that’s matriciding!
Merlin is a hoot.
I think that Mordred needs help
He was a product of incest.
Have you by any chance ever read the novel Queen of Camelot? It has a very interesting take on Mordred. Basically he is depicted as an honorable knight who dreams of a unified Britain, and meets with Saxon leaders in secret to try to broker a peace treaty. Arthur sees this as betrayal, and the consequent argument between them drives him to failure and his own death.
The thumbnail looks like "Morgana Vaping."
As a blacksmith i would have never thought of casting a nipple imprint on the armor unless it was a special order...I guess. Can't see the value of that, unless i was super bored.
Kids have no respect these days. She was only trying to call him for supper.
Talk about “smoking hot”.

Careful now...
wasn't there another movie that used that same incantation?
Nothing like armor with nipples. They don't make em like they used to. If I ever get armor it must have nipples!!!
Everyone cried foul when Batman did it
They don't call it Breastplate for nothing. 😁
So, Joel Schumacher was not the only one with a thing for nipply armor...

Mon Gaming ummm get the feeling that’s NOT Helen Mirren in make up, but some old hag from an Irish pub...
"Murdering Morgana?" LOL
Killing her was dumb now u got no powers
I actually prefer the edited version on which Mordred simply strikes Morgana and then backs away from the corpse. That version used to be broadcast on HBO. It had better flow and seemed less gratuitous.
I LIKE THIS ONE. IT LOOKS LIKE ME WHEN MEN USE MY TEMPLE.
This is not gratuitous: this is pure, unadultered and unrestrained fear, disgust and rage on Mordred's part. Of course he will strangle his mother to death in a fit of anger, a punch is not enough to appease his fury.

It´s a little stupid.
she never did control it because she never understood it couldn't be controlled
It is something she did not have occasion to use. It is a difficult and powerful instrument and she mostly needed and wanted certain skills to prevent aging. In her dreams - she was less inhibited.

Helluva doobie, there!
At risk of being "that guy," I need to point out that this "spell" was invented for the movie, and is not from any real druid text - mainly because they didn't have any, as their religion forbade any writing down of it's dogma. So sorry, guys, you aren't really going to be able to do an Uther Pendragon and bonk the girl of your dreams just by reciting a few words in Gaelic.

I'm old enough to have seen this in the theater, but I don't think I saw it till after LotR came out. This and Ladyhawke did not age well.
A classic in its day - but it's had its day. I love to watch the spooky roles of Helen Mirren and Nicol Williamson, and it's a rattling good tale but, by modern standards the direction and much of the acting is robotic and am-drams, whilst the scenery and SFX leave a lot to be desired.
What would be neat is if someone like Peter Jackson were to do a remake.
no, this is the last perfect movie made
Acting is a bit stage-y, yes. Not sure if Peter Jackson is the best choice, he gets worse and worse at pacing
