  • Listen to everything Andrew Yang said during the second night of the Democratic presidential debates in Miami, FL.
    More on the debate: On the final night of the Democratic presidential primary debates, there were sharp exchanges over busing and segregation, a frank admission of failure on racial tensions and an attempt to open a generational divide between the front-runners and the others.
    Ten candidates again faced the challenge of standing out among the crowd.
    Andrew Yang, a former tech executive and political newcomer, is best known for his proposal for a universal basic income of $12,000 a year. He is calling the payments the “Freedom Dividend.”
    Yang, whose internet followers are called the Yang Gang, distinguished himself before a word was uttered.
    He appeared without a tie.

      From his website with a lot of information about how he will use and implement UBI without borrowing a single cent.
      1. Current spending. We currently spend between $500 and $600 billion a year on welfare programs, food stamps, disability and the like. This reduces the cost of Universal Basic Income because people already receiving benefits would have a choice but would be ineligible to receive the full $1,000 in addition to current benefits.
      Additionally, we currently spend over one trillion dollars on health care, incarceration, homelessness services and the like. We would save $100 - 200+ billion as people would take better care of themselves and avoid the emergency room, jail, and the street and would generally be more functional.
      2. A VAT. Our economy is now incredibly vast at $19 trillion, up $4 trillion in the last 10 years alone. A VAT at half the European level would generate $800 billion in new revenue. A VAT will become more and more important as technology improves because you cannot collect income tax from robots or software.
      3. New revenue. Putting money into the hands of American consumers would grow the economy. The Roosevelt Institute projected that the economy would grow by approximately $2.5 trillion and create 4.6 million new jobs. This would generate approximately $800 - 900 billion in new revenue from economic growth and activity.
      4. Taxes on top earners and pollution. By removing the Social Security cap, implementing a financial transactions tax, and ending the favorable tax treatment for capital gains/carried interest, we can decrease financial speculation while also funding the Freedom Dividend. We can add to that a carbon fee that will be partially dedicated to funding the Freedom Dividend, making up the remaining balance required to cover the cost of this program.

Means people wont have to work... or at least if they are already successful people, that they would get a little bonus. Though, it wont happen. He said it himself, the VAT tax would pay for less than 1/3rd of that. What are we going to with them? Kill the 40% economically useless class? Or do you have a transition plan? Can you invent productive work that isn't repetitive? @whiskeysprings Před 5 lety +6

      @@olger05 His UBI plan is actually to encourage work, not replace. He acknowledges the vital role work plays in our person well being and society at large. The dividend promotes work by bolstering consumer markets right at home that will make main street businesses like yoga studios, bike shops, and coffee and wine bars much more buoyant and sound. Even the smallest towns of a couple thousand adults will bring in millions of new revenue every month thanks to the dividend, which will grow regional economies by 10-15% and create millions of jobs across the country. If we don't do this, wealth will continue to leave these towns and top corporations will continue to game current taxe codes.

    • @olger05
      @olger05 Před 5 lety

      b. 93 Yes, initially. But how many yoga classes can you take? How many coffees can you drink? The market will be saturated with jobs only humans can do. The business you are talking about, are already under enormous pressure. More competitors doing the same thing isn’t good for the economy. Just look at African country’s with less diversity on the job market. All stability is gone. And we will all be more dependent on very few variables to be successful of to fail.
      The truth of the matter is, we need diversity. A lot of people will not be working. Even if they wanted to. Except if they can invent “new jobs” that can’t be done by a machines. But that’s very interesting and difficult problem we will need to solve. But I don’t think it’s possible to solve if all basic needs are met.

It's always unpleasant to think how movie industries portray us asians. I don't watch many movies but take these superhero marvel movies as an example, they always find these Asian stereotypical looking or at least make them look stereotypical to make us look unattractive. I can really see how Andrew is using these stereotype and owning it like in one interview he said: "You know I'm Asian, so I work hard". And when he says it, it has a positive connotation. We gotta own these stereotypes and use it in a positive portrayal. Not letting others abuse this and this it's funny.

    • @CockatooDude
      @CockatooDude Před 5 lety

      No candidates healthcare plan costs 32 trillion, that figure is complete bogus (not to mention completely unrealistic as annual government revenue is about 4.5 trillion). Currently we spend twice as much on healthcare per person as other countries that have socialized healthcare. Studies done on the feasibility of universal healthcare in America show that it would cost about half of what we spend on healthcare now, which is 1.1 trillion a year. So we'd end up saving about 500 billion a year on healthcare as a nation. Yang and Sanders are in agreement about this.

    Simple explanation for anyone who doesn't get how the VAT would work. Yang already said the VAT will not apply to everyday essentials like food and diapers. The VAT under Yang's plan would be around 10%. Imagine you getting a $1000 a month and you buy a $600 big screen TV with the 1000 from Yang's UBI. That means you will pay a VAT of $60 plus sales tax around 8% which would be $48. That still leaves you $292. Now imagine buying a big screen TV every month. You'd still have something left over every month. No matter how you calculate it you're still coming out on top.

      Charles Lee The problem I have with the VAT is that instead of taxing The corporations he loves to attack, he proposes a tax on all of us. Why not tax the big corporations like he said?

    • @xavclee
      @xavclee Před 5 lety +10

      @@jfcha744 because taxing corporations directly is harder to do. Even Bernie Sanders doesn't have plan on how he'll tax rich people and corporations. There are too many loopholes that keep corporations from paying taxes. For example Jeff Bezos the richest man in the world only reports an income of $80,000 a year. Even if he pays 100% of that it's nothing. If you try to impose a high corporate tax and close every single lope hole they just move the operation over seas into tax friendly countries.

      If every person gets $1,000 a month, you'll want to discourage irresponsible spending on things you don't need right? While encouraging spending on the things you do need, such as new training and education. That's the purpose of VAT here

    • @breyrey7612
      @breyrey7612 Před 5 lety +13

      @@jfcha744 On one of his interviews, he described something like an automation tax for companies like amazon for every automated activity. That alone almost pays for the UBI. The VAT is the proposed solution to make sure that EVERYBODY pays taxes. The richer you are, the lesser taxes you pay. Wealthy people spend a lot of their money on luxury and that is how you tax them.
