Rocks to Gold Part 3: Creating a Gold Button by Smelting the Concentrates

  • In our final installment of our series Rock to Gold we take our gold rich concentrates and smelt them into a small gold button. By weighing the gold button we determine the troy ounces/grams per ton of the original rock. This was a fun video to make and I hope you guys enjoyed it. Please leave your comments and questions.     It's a good idea to preheat your mold, so it doesn't cool to fast, so that the gold has more time to settle.

    I could watch that all day. From nothing to gold! Did you ever get the purity of it checked? Wonder how much silver was in there.

      +Moose Scrapper Thanks Moose. I haven't had a chance to check the purity yet, but I hope it will be quite high. From the assays of the rocks there was only about 10% silver so I think it's probably 90% gold by weight. When I get it analyzed I will post a comment in the video. Thanks again.

    Hey great stuff. I'm new but are you close to the Virginia side ? I have ALOT of quarts an other rock around me plus have gathered some samples of which you can clearly see the gold or what looks to be gold I know the difference between pyrite and gold so it's not pyrite but if you're close I could use some help on it

    Love your tenacity and very informative video. May I make two points: First, since the same flux was used with each test and visible gold was present in the slag, might I suggest you also test another flux mix to compare? There are literally hundreds available. And , second, I guess you have noticed the typo error on the Legend Refining Flux label in the chemical formula for potassium nitrate, KNO3, not KnO3 (sorry I can't do a subscript for the number "3".)

    Your videos are really good stuff. I liked especially the smelting of black sand stuff. I have one comment anyway; There is an article in Gold Refining Forum from metallurgist, who works in gold industry, about smelting. He wrote that it's virtually impossible to recover all the gold that is left in slag by gravity methods, or even leaching. No matter how fine one mills it. He wrote that only practical way to recover it all is to use the slag in a next feed. Hope to see more stuff from you soon.

      +mbmmllc Typically i have read carelessly. The poster wrote that the slag must be finely milled, processed in a shaker table and the TABLE CONCENTRATE should be used in a next feed. Makes sense, other wise one would end up more and more slag to feed. Sorry, my embarrassment.

    I hope you respond. I have sat and sat watching your video's. I am working 3 tailings piles from 200-300 yr old mines. I have truck loads of pyrite, that I toss away. Am I tossing gold away. What I gather from your video's is there is also a little gold in the pyrite. I crush with a rock crusher, run through a 5 tear gold cube, pan light weights off, take out magnetite and smelt. I get alot of tiny specks stuck in my slag. As I understand the little bit of pyrite I miss burns up during smelt. I have taken to have stuff acid tested[since I dont have here] Guy said 18k. I kept getting gold specks stuck in slag, got tire of wasting so ship to a refiner in Colorado, never any response, then shipped to refiner in Binghamton NY, He said nothing in what I sent, try again. I really wish I could get some answer's. I know I have since I have gotten some buttons from my smelting's. Can you spare the time to help?

      Migel, Pyrite often has a small amount of gold. Often 1 to 3%. Sometimes more, sometimes less. You can crush the pyrite and use an Aqua Regia solution, or leach with cyanide. If your pyrite has a higher amount of gold, it can be profitable, but I would highly encourage you to do your research first, as these processes can be dangerous.

      Hi Migel. Sorry I didn't see your original message from a few months back. I think the best thing is to send your pyrite off to an assayer and have it tested. Try American Analytical Services in Osburn ID. This will tell you if there is enough gold in your sample to mess with. Your pyrite will need to assay really high to make it worth while to smelt if you only have a small amount (few lbs). If your pyrite cons assays 200 oz/ton it will take 10 lbs of cons to smelt to 1 oz of gold. If it assays only 20 oz/ton it would take 100 lbs of cons to recover 1 oz of gold. If you are creating large amounts of pyrite cons (tons) with gold values of over about 20 oz/ton this will be a salable product. I would try TCB international run by Ken Jewel.     wow! I was expecting 20 grams per ton. you doubled that. so, It's 20 trips up the mountain and back. And then you'll have an ounce of gold. I think I'm a bit too lazy for that lol. Thanks for showing us this. It's very instructive.

    Can you throw any old rocks in a smelter and extract the metals from it? I got alot of incredibly fine gold i cant for the life of me extract and im wondering if i melt my concentrates down ill be able to retrieve my gold rather than a mercury set up asking someone who has more experience than me hahah
