Return to Home Fly App Comparison / MIni 4 Pro vs Mini 2

  • Has anyone ever done a DJI Return to Home Fly App comparison? I don't think they have, but that's going to change today. We're going to compare the DJI Mini 4 Pro and the DJI Mini 2, both of which are using different DJI Fly App versions.
    Our DJI Mini 2 (Jack) is set on the 1.4.8 Fly App version and our DJI Mini 4 Pro (Dwight) is set on the 1.12.8 Fly App version. And yes, we name our drones...
    Anyway, we received a comment from a loyal subscriber asking if we could demonstrate what behavior the drones demonstrate upon receiving the initial Return to Home command. Watch and see what these results are. You may be surprised to learn these 2 drones DON'T react the same under all circumstances...
    As always, we want to thank everyone for watching and taking the time to comment. We really appreciate your support and input. Without your thoughts and suggestions, we wouldn't be able to make videos like this so we sincerely thank you. We hope you have a great week and God bless!

    My drones are named Hank, Hans, and Bruce... I featured Bruce in the latest video on my channel. I remember a couple years ago, I read somewhere that the drone backtracks a few meters in order to try to regain signal before starting the actual RTH procedure. This is the first video I've found that supported what I believe I read.

      Lol. All awesome and fitting names. I’ve heard the same thing about it backtracking at first but I was surprised the mini 4 immediately went up. I figured it would follow suit with the mini 2, eh?

    Thank you Kevin. Therefore is clear, wherever you select the RTH location, drone will go there. if the controller is disconnected/tihout battery, it will also go to the RTH selected location. Good job, as always, very useful ones. PS, be careful with Jack, he will be disappointed if you confuse again his name.

      Lol yea, Jack would definitely begin to get a complex if I keep messing up his name. He may not RTH when I ask him if I’m not careful. Hahaha. Honestly I’m always impressed when I hit RTH and these drones do what they do. I really didn’t expect to see Jack backtrack like he did though. That was neat!

    Congratulations on getting your 107! Now I expect to see more videos from you. Waypoints, hyper lapse, drone on drone filming, flying two drones at once etc. I got my 107 4 months after I started the hobby so I could start my CZcams channel. (March 2023 is when I started flying). I name my drones as well. My air 3 is Bel Air, my mini 3 pro is Mini. I haven't named my mini 4 pro yet because I bought it during the winter and have only flown it 4 times. I'm thinkin' ... Dart, maybe.

    I rarely do an auto RTH I like to manually fly it back myself but it's a good practice to do just to make sure that it is working correctly. Also make sure to set RTH height higher than any obstacles in its path on drones without obstacle avoidance sensors. Congratulations again on your part 107. Keep those great videos coming. Interesting tests Kevin. I haven't had Aeris out in a long while! Thanks to cold weather! I'm so ready for spring and warm weather to get here and stay! I have a test suggerstion: take Jack, Rose, and Dwight out to your favorite spot, divide the daylight hours for that day by 3, and fly each drone for that amount of time, JUST FOR FUN! (I might take the Pt 107 when/if I hit 1000 subs, we'll see.) 💜😎💜

Regarding the 107, take it when you feel it’s time man. If you’d rather fly for fun and recreation, continue that for sure. Just keep flying though cause you got an awesome drone.

      Reference to the Jack & Rose in the Titanic movie works, too. I didn't think of that. But they might not be good for over-water flights!😄My first camera drone was a Yuneec Typhoon H hexacopter with 6 rotors that could still fly with only 5 working. I'm down in Louisiana (but more than a mile from Texarkana), so my drones fly over water quite a bit. Rotors #5 and #6 are somehow comforting.

  • @gama45
    @gama45 Před 3 měsíci +1

    Well, I don't think it's juvenile! I liked the idea so named my drones. My 2 Mini 2s were Fred & Ethel. But Fred drowned, so he was replaced by Grace. Then I sold Ethel to a friend so I could use the money to get my Part 107. Then I adopted Faith, my Mini 4 Pro. And I'm having a ball making those RTH tests, including a few crashes, but just hitting those small branches low to the ground, so no harm done, other than a few small nicks in the prop blades.
    Then Find My Drone has been a real lifesaver, or I'd never find Faith out in the woods.
    But that was some good tests that you did, Kev. But I forgot how to find "Update RTH", so thanks for letting me know it's under the safety tab. I was looking for it on the flight screen. I should try that and see how Faith will fly back to the new RTH in the woods. 😊

      You wrote just what I was about to write 🙂 As a Mini 2 owner, I didn't like that part 😬
      I'm wondering if something has been changed in the latest update, cause that's not the way, mine use to act. Yesterday, I was out flying my Mini 2, and as I was flying a waypoint mission, it didn't stop, when I pressed the emergency brake aka the pause button, which it normally does. I could only stop it when pressing stop mission. Had that been in follow mode, when riding my motorcycle, and I didn't know that, I could have clipped a tree or another obstacle 😰

    • @olabergvall3154
      @olabergvall3154 Před 3 měsíci

      It works as designed. In case of signal loss, it backtracks a bit in the hope that signal can be regained (say if you happened to fly behind a big structure and lost signal, or if you lost signal under a bridge, where just going up would be disastrous).

    • @PickleFaceProduction
      @PickleFaceProduction Před 3 měsíci

      My concern would be that I lost signal because I flew behind something. Then if the drone flies back toward you before rising, it could run into the very thing that you flew behind. I would think that scenario would be far more likely than flying under something. But if they designed it with that in mind, it makes sense why the mini 4 wouldn't do that since it can detect obstacles above.

    • @olabergvall3154

    Congrats on passing the part 107 test. Got a question, first flight as a licensed pilot, flying the mini 2, do you have a RID module on it or is it broadcasting RID? I know the mini 4 will broadcast it with the intelligent plus battery but if you use the non- plus battery don't you have to have a RID module with the smaller battery?
    Getting that license is great and comes with some benefits but now that you have it even flying recreationally don't you have to broadcast a RID at all times regardless of aircraft weight?

    • @Poophead1
      @Poophead1 Před 3 měsíci +1

      PT 107 drone operators can fly under recreational rules, and as such, would not require RID. The caveat to this, is if using same drone. A sub 250 used for a pt107 flight requires registration. Remote ID is tied to whether a drone is registered or not. If Kevin had a separate, sub250 drone, used solely for recreational flights...no RID would be required. Using a registered sub250 drone, even for a recreational flight would then require RID. This is my understanding.

    • @WeretheRoberts
      @WeretheRoberts  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Awesome question, Thomas, and great reply, Steve. Yea that pesky RID requirement is in full effect now so I did get a couple modules for the Mini 2 drones. I have the plus batteries on the mini 4 as you mentioned so it’s already emitting the signal and we’re covered there. Steve is right about the RID being applicable to whether the drone is registered or not. All of our drones are now registered so they all require the RID regardless of weight. Funny thing is with the RID on the Mini 2, the drone is now above the 250 gram. Lol. Kristi said they had this all planned from the beginning. Oh I’m sure they did. We got the least expensive modules we could find on Amazon by Holy Stone. They’re $89.99 right now which is a lot less then most others. Still expensive if you ask me though.

      Lol we used to be nomads. We lived in our camper for about 6 years and it was the best life ever! Kristi changed our mind though so we moved back into a house last year. Lol. Boo I say! Sometimes I wish DJI would implement the option to auto update the homepoint like the Maven app does for the Mini 2 but I’d like to have the option to choose. Maven does it automatically when it’s in follow mode I believe. Maybe I need to confirm that before I say it. Lol.

    • @driewiel
      @driewiel Před 3 měsíci

      @@WeretheRoberts It makes sense to dynamically auto-update homepoint in follow mode. You're no longer where it took off. If you can choose in the settings then even better. Although too many settings isn't good either. That's when you start making mistakes.
      Now I'm not a big fan of the obstacle avoidance. People crash it even more. But it is great of course if you have the drone land on it's own before you are there! You point at a spot on the map, and there it is waiting for you. That is the future. Maybe it even ordered lunch to save time?

    • @WeretheRoberts
      @WeretheRoberts  Před 3 měsíci

      That’s an awesome point, man. My understanding on the Mini 2 is that it retraces its steps initially backtracking trying to regain its signal. Once it realizes the signal isn’t gonna be reconnected, it raises up to the RTH height and flies home. It’s pretty ingenious really. I flew over at a low altitude on that flight and when it’s signal was lost, it stayed low and flew backwards at first. I guess if I had flown in at a high altitude and lowered down by the camera, it would’ve raided up first, eh? Either way, the Mini 4 didn’t seem to care. It just went up both times. Lol.
