So you're looking for an affordable, bright front light for mountain biking or road riding?
This is it! Heaps of light output, smart features, good battery life and a compact form factor, what more can you wish for?
This is an honest review of the MagicShine RN 3000, where I put it through hell out on the trail and it pulls through.
So a quick rundown of the specs and functionality:
This is a 3000lm light with two diodes that you can toggle between or run both at the same time. This one button is the only interface there is. It also lights up to tell you the battery status. Now since we’re already at the business end of the light let’s talk about the light pattern. While one side has this smooth reflector and produces more of a spotlight type beam, the other side diffuses the light more, so you get a choice of one or the other, or both. At the top of the lens, you’ll see these deflectors. The idea behind them is that they’ll direct some of the light down so that you don’t blind oncoming traffic or illuminate the treetops. You want all of the light where it counts, in front of you, on the trail. This cutout on the side is also a nice tough, it’s there to add some side visibility.
The RN 3000 is powered by a 3.6v 10000mAh battery that charges fully in 3.5h. Now here’s the kicker, it charges via USB C and can also double as a battery pack, for example if your phone dies out on the trail. This is a feature that MagicShine had in their battery packs for a few years now, and it’s potentially life saving. I’d love to see it as standard on all lights.
Regarding weather protection, this light has an IPX6 rating, so you should technically be able to hose off your bike with the light still on it. Probably not recommended though.
Runtime is quite good too for such a small package, just over 2h on full blast.
MagicShine stated the beam throw is a whopping 263m!
This is what $159.99 USD gets you, pretty reasonable price compared to other high quality products on the market.

Cool demo, and thank you for the discount code. I used it to buy an RN3000 a few minutes ago. Hope you get proper credit/$ for this. Like you, I had been using Magicshine products for a long time; actually, since they first being sold by GeoMan (no longer in biz) many years ago, starting with their little supposedly 900lm model (likely was more like 500lm). But, after their battery debacle and had to supply all owners with new batteries, their quality started improving massively and now they're or should be considered one of the best bike light companies on the market. Cheers!

I think their build quality punches way above their price point. Very good lights for the money.

Pro looking video! Is the light enough to be the only light when you go ride?

    • @HFODT
      @HFODT  Před 2 lety +2

If mounted on the helmet, probably, although regardless of how much light you have, it's never enough. On the bars, it doesn't really let you see behind obstacles, like every other bar mounted light, but it works wonders as a floodlight.

I use the Ray 2600 on my bars and have used it solo when my chinese head torch died on me, mid ride. It does do the job but it's no match for a bar light and helmet light. I've now bought an RN3000 to go on the bars and my Ray 2600 is going on top of the noggin'.

Run time is inflated. I did a test and got 1:41mins at max. Thats 19mins short. I had a fan blowing to it.

Thanks for the review. How do you like the handlebar mount it comes with? Does the light and mount stay tight and not shake around too much on lots of bumps? I ride 2 hours per night in an area with lots of roots and rocks and I would notice if the light moves and bounces around. Dees it stay tight? thanks

I ride the kind of terrain you saw in the video, that was shot in my local woods. While I had my doubts that a light heavier than what I used to run on the bars will stay put, I’ve had no issues so far, and the mount is still intact and doesn’t need adjustment mid ride. Granted I haven’t taken it off 2m drops to flat, but it has survived a year of night riding on normal rooty and rocky forest trails. Works well as a flashlight for camping too :)

My code doesn’t work because of the ongoing Black Friday sale. If you want to support the channel, use my referral link magicshine.com/?ref=HFODT15 and the code BLACK10. Hope that helps!

    I bought one...
It's bright and the battery lasts a while but the light is too heavy for the mount. Mine sheared off on the second ride (on smooth roads, not even anything rough!). Customer service from magicshine is very poor. They are refusing to honour the warranty and have been quite unhelpful really.
    I would avoid.
I've gone back to 2 x fenix bc30 which are fine for me, with a much better mount.

Sucks that yours broke, so far mine seems solid. I've never had to deal with their customer service, none of their stuff i own broke yet, but they were nice enough and quick to answer when i emailed them regarding other stuff...
