- Take a look back at the last hundred years of updos, from the liberated short-styled curls and waves of 1920s and the signature 1930s floral updo of Billie Holiday, to the iconic double buns Princess Leia brought to the 1970s and the sleek and tight topknots celebrities love so much today.

Where is my messy bun? That’s a 2010 staple
ya i was wondering abt the messy bun too!!!
Hell it's been been a thing since 2003 or so
Laver constantine i think she was talking about how it got like popular and trendy
@@tothmancometh yea we were doing it since our older sisters and etc were doing since 2003 so in turn all us Myspace kids and so on started doing it so its not 2010 staple. Just stating the obvious, I want it right. That's like saying the two pieces framing the face and wearing a bandana was 2003 when that was one of its last years since it really came from the 90s like Aliyah.
@@constantine9142 *actually* ahem.
The video isn't showing when different hairstyles were created, it's about the hairstyles that were *popular* in certain decades. Yes the messy bun was created in 2000s but it became much more *popular* in the 2010s. The whole video is about when different hairstyles became popular. I hope that clears it up for you.
These videos' hairstyles are disappointingly incorrect. No one actually wore the Leia buns in the seventies for example.
You don't know that, some people might have
I would have lol but yeah Ik what you mean
Look were you born at the 70s or somethin thats when the original Star Wars movie came ok
The title of the video is "100 years of Updos", no one said they were everyday hairstyles ...
@@Mogo-chan ikr
you know what would be so dope? if they had people from these decades and have them recreate their favorite hairstyles/looks from their time
Cv Babyyy how would anyone be alive from the 1920s for example. Not that many
isabelle Gonzalez •3• if they were from late 20s, they would be in their 90s, there is a possibly that they’re still alive.
Abigail Oakwill But then they grew up in the 30’s, not the 20’s
*betty white has entered the chat*
Cy Babyyy awesomeness! Or at the very least (if it's a 30s hairstyle) talk about it & show old pictures if they can't demonstrate it!
Oh my, as a fashion historian, these are a nightmare to watch.
How?
@@serra2695 I get and respect the fact that they are trying to educate people about fashion and cosmetics history, but even though I believe they are quite thorough in their research, the execution is quite poor. For some reason, they always end up looking rather modern (possibly because the hairstylists chosen have a modern education). For one, the 1920s hair isn't styled enough, it is way too loose. Women of colour especially were the best at doing marcel waves (look at Josephine Baker, for example); no woman up until the 1960s would have been caught dead with straight hair.
The 1930s updo is rather loose too, but still the most historically accurate.
The 1940s victory rolls are too over the top, and the hairscarf would have covered most of the hair in 90% of cases because it wasn't just an accessory to accentuate the hairstyle.
The 1950s are also exaggerated and look a bit to pin-upy for day to day wear, even formal wear.
The 1960s shape is just... totally wrong, I can't even begin to explain it. Look at vintage pics of women wearing bouffants and tell me you don't see a difference.
As for 1970s... well doing only Princess Leia is a choice, but it was far from common among actual women.
I can't comment much after that, I was cringing so much I just stopped watching.
Once again, the intention is great, amazing. I just don't want people who have no clue and are trying to educate themselves to be mislead
I can agree, I'm not a fashion historian but as a history nerd, it made me cringe.
Sister Keslyn Same lmao
True,.........
You’d think with over a million subscribers, they could afford to hire better researchers.
3:28 when u tryna sneak snacks inside the cinema
g gonzie 😂😂😂
gwen I- LMAOO
I’d do that, tbh.
Thank you for using models of different sizes and ethnicities. LOVE IT!
Thank goodness I wasn't alive when the "beehive" was in style! It seems like it would take hours to get ready 😂
Usually their hair was set and they would go back in a week. Stinky hair back then lol
Super strong hairspray and dry shampoo. You kept your hairstyle going for as ling as you could.
ur not funny
Go back to the kitchen
I once read a book that said there were times when the girls would have their hair done up with paper stuffed into the beehive to plump it up, then wear it so long it would get infested with insects. I doubt was the norm but the fact that it happened at all is horrifying.
Personally I really loved the beehive look. I actually had it for over 4 years!! I know its not everyones taste but hey I loved it hehe.
Lol everyone had those damn butterflies. I used to rock the Snooki poof and I swear every month it got higher and higher with more hairspray than before. I used to carry Aqua net in my purse! Lol
😅 Those were the days!! 🤣
Space buns were a 90s/early 00s thing, it was a retro throw bk when they started trending again recently
I wear them now. Never back then 🤷♀️
@@kitamcguire2509 I couldn’t because my mum insisted that I had to have short hair in the 90’s.
Once again this is mostly innacurate. They didn't even try for the 1970s.
I was really excited for that one too :/
Possibly because so much of the 70's hair was long, straight and sleek.
@@PrincessSixThirteen wedge cuts (Lady Diana, Dorothy Hamil,) and feathered hair (Farrah Fawcett.)
Also, Corn Rows (Cicely Tyson, Stevie Wonder,) Gerri Curls........
@@miriamhavard7621 I didn't say there weren't other options. I will point out that a lot of those options don't really go "up".
What I was trying to say is that they didn't want to actually research it.
i was looking for farrah fawcett hair in the 70s when i was watching this video
I love how "space buns" is 2010 after kids trying to recreate 90s fashion... Where are any braids. Ever. Also 70s upstyle there was alot more than starwars parties in the 70s
Omg yes! I was sure they were going to include braids but they didnt
Yes! French braids is so iconically 80”s! Every 80s girl rocked French braids. Such a miss!
They look like crap. My buns never look like I wrestled a bear.
Most of these are pretty bad, but actually, I thought her space buns were kind of cute. Haha
I can barely even get my hair into a bun. Never mind an updo 🤣🤣🤣
These hairstyles are epic tho. Wish I could do one. I might as well just stick to trying to untangle the knots in my hair.🤔🤔🤔😆😆😆
Well, having a friend to do the back helps.
@@Tina06019 I feel attacked.
What about the people who....... Nah never mind.
😂
Also no way in hell Jackie Kennedy would be caught in a hairstyle like that. Too tall, too round, and you could not wear a hat with it.
I cringed at the 90s segment. Not a single basket or corn rolls with water falls. Or the basket with waterfall swoop combo. That look was iconic for black women.
corn rows*
Sylvia Tresselt no, corn rolls not the corn rows. I’m talking about the style that looks like a basket but it’s not a basket. I know corn rows are the straight back braids.
hayabusahime when I googled corn rolls it said did you mean corn rows oh and also there’s no such thing cuz working at a hair salon we were never taught anything like that but it’s whatever
Sylvia Tresselt they’re called French twist/French roll. I was calling them the wrong name. But my point still stands. Those and the baskets were iconic. I was wearing those styles as a kid in the early 2000s.
lol corn rolls. sounds delicious 😂
Both the 1920s styles were so elegant and pretty ❤️
I like how diverse the models are in terms of color and even shapes.. They all look so beautiful
Alot of inaccuracies, but I love ladies' style with the Gardenias.
Billie Holiday! She was a beauty in person and voice! ❤️
Out of all updos why the Leia buns the movie was a success but no one actually did Leia buns ,such a disappointment out of all the 70s up dos
I was about to comment that. While it may be an iconic movie hairdo, it doesn't make sense to put it in a video of most popular updos of each decade worn.
Yes.........
Actually.... they did. LOL. I saw a picture of some students during the 70's at a highschool function, and a girl in a mini skirt had those buns. LOL.
yeah, and most girls wore their hair down, my mom says that not many girls had their hairs in eccentric updos.
Indiegirl007 I’m sure but I don’t imagine many grown women went into a salon and showed a picture of Carrie Fisher on set of a new hope and said I want this ya know? Maybe the space buns would work in a decade trend video but not in updos popular by decade.
Oh the 1990’s with the butterfly clips🦋🦋 That was soo me! I had a collection of them different colors and glitter. I didn’t get mines at Claire’s though but the dollar store. 😂
same here. we had no Claires back then
Big Little Girl
We did have Claire’s but they were a bit more expensive. Why pay more when you can get a whole package of butterfly clips for a dollar.
@@MartVale1 We, in Poland, had no Claires XD
Same here. Except they were sold in the $2 shops in Australia.
That lady wearing the butterfly clips is soooo stunning ❤
Omg last time I was this early Danielle Cohn had clothes 😱

hAHa good one

I love that the 70s is the Star Wars buns since no one wore their hair up in the 70s.
Especially as the 70’s was about counterculture.
From the bob hair of the 1920's to the victory curls in the 1940's the 20th century sure was a great time and will be truly missed...
@Charise Bejarano But we will never forget old slow jazz of the 20's to the hard rock and roll of the 50's what times!
@Charise Bejarano The 20's was the best time ever lots of events happened in that decade with the era of freedom, Flappers, the prohibition of drinking, women getting the right to vote, the wall street crash...
@Charise Bejarano My most favorite event that happened in the 20's is the voting rights for women
Not such a great time for POC.
@@zahara1115 What?
the 2000's "pompadour pouf" looks more like an actual beehive than the one they did for the 60's...
That 2010’s girl looks like a darker version of Kristin from Ladylike
I love the vintage hairstyles, the gardenia Billie Holiday one is especially pretty 1:20!
0:41 I’m soooooo envious of her gorgeous hair😍😍
You really need to do better, more thorough research and hire stylists who know how to replicate historical fashions if you're going to continue this series.
Y'all did that FIRST model wrong. With that lipstick look!!! 😔
The plump Black lady is my FAVORITE!!!! 💕💖
I am so happy to see the butterfly pins! When I was a kid I had lots of those and we also used this plastic colorful hair bands (which were killer for the hair, gosh the damage) and these plastic zig zag head bands! Being a kid on the 90's was pretty colorful. I also appreciate you can see a little more of world wide trends in this video than just U.S trends (yes yes, I know it is a usa youtube channel focused on "american" content, but still is nice).
I've only ever seen messy topknots, never sleek ones
7:00 okay but we had a group of girls in our high school who looked sorta like this everyday more poofed and heavy makeup they looked crazy
My four-year-old watched this with me and commented that the last one was "like Mickey Mouse."
ThisIsViridus you should buy a new one, your current one is defective
Well, she or he isn't wrong! 😅 I used to wear my curls like that but only put one at the top of my head.. it actually was pretty cute..or so I thought! 😊
When Amy Winehouse came out I was such a fan (I still am to till this day) 😍💖😢 Rip Beautiful 💜 with her beehive hair look I was straight away hooked and had to get it and I also dyed my hair mega black too. I would always have my hair teased at the back.
Oh God. The 90's was actually my gothy hairstyle during the early 00's.
That beehive takes some work. And that poodle hair style I thought it was called a French roll. We used to use some kind of stuffing in our hair to make the roll bigger
people might have done a smaller version and higher up of leia's buns in the 70's. but we all know the space buns in the 2010's was thanks to Leia and Sailor Moon.
The 2nd 1920s model is sooooooo beautiful!
Can you do one for the men? 100 years of exercise, hairstyles, and others for the men.
What about the Gibson girl in 1910s?
Agreed
The Gibson Girl ideal was more early 1900s. 1910s would be better portrayed with loose coils framing the face with a curled bun or updo at the back of the head.
@@wegotthistogether9443 True but she should of been in the video
Julian Castro your so right
In the 1920s hair was pulled into a chignon at the nape with puffs at the ears mimicking the bob hair cuts! In the mid- late 1920's Marcel waves were in, be it in faux bob or real bob.
Hello person scrolling through the comments 😊
Hi!
Gabrielle Littman hello
The Jersey poof! Lol I hated it then cause too many made it extreme and ridiculous.
Hey there!
hey
90 kid here. It's so true about butterfly clips ! I used to wear colorful all over my head !
I loved these! Also, good job for using different hair types! 😍💖
I wear the last one hundreds of times, it's very comfortable 😊
This stuff is so interesting, I especially enjoyed seeing how some were done.
BUTTERFLY CLIPS IN THE THUMBNAIL
I definitely did the butterfly clips 😆. I was a 90s kid and a 2000s teen.
Well, I found this fascinating and love how much fun all of these beautiful ladies had too!
Wow... crazy how styles develope 😱
These are all fantastic!
Okay but, the curvy girl has the prettiest smile ever🤩
I just loved the white models in this video
1960s lady: They say I'm too short for the rollar coaster.
1960s Hairdresser: I got you fam.
What was that Snooki interpretation!?😂
8:41 That model looks like Monica Belucci, super gorgeous!
No victory rolls? the only 40s look they know seems to be Rosie. Nothing more
Big Little Girl
It was better than the last one I saw, where you could see daylight through the rolls!
Love these
My sister loved those butterfly clips. You haven’t felt paid until you’ve stepped on one of those.
Awww, the Billie Holiday one. ❤️
I just want to say the woman at 8:42 minutes is GORGEOUS! I mean look at HER! she looks like a star or celebrity. 0o0!
The girl from the 80’s has the most genuine and adorable expressions, I hope she’s having a good day
There were so many 90's and 2k types of black women updos you could have highlighted. you could have used the movie BAPS as a reference or reviewed old daytime talk-show videos for inspiration.
If victory rolls aren’t in here for the 40s or 50s I’m suing
They should do over 100 years cause they missed out some of the most iconic updo's of all time, Like regency era, revolutionary France era, Victorian and the Gibson girl of the 1900's-10's.
Pls do a 100 years of lipstick styles. Thank you!
I can only do low ponytail. Wait, what? That's become my logo. Lol.
The red-hair girl is a perfect Ginevra Weasley!
The last style was more 70s than the Star Wars thing.
Love this vid
Please do a hairstylist’s full routine video
I want to do cosmetology,it’d be very interesting!.
I know 2020 is coming soon but it bothers me that they didn't include 1910 lol. The updos of that time, in my opinion, were lovely.
Dude mad props to the hairdresser
I find it interesting for the Princess Leia (i spelled her name wrong) buns that these buns are used in Native American tribes for ceremonies. In a way you can say they were used widely in these areas, but we just do not think about them 💁
The 40's girl is so beautiful omgggg. + the 60's one was very good and the 70's was so wrong lmao.
2:44 she seriously looked like Lucille Ball for a second there! 😂😂
it’s a shame some stylists can’t create looks in any style other than 2010’s
I can appreciate a non-black person who knows how to lay down a black person’s edges
Love it
I remember these butterfly clips! #90's-kid
1980s girl you are so fudging cute your smile just yass I wanna hug :)
I wore a banana clip even when I was in eighth grade and that was probably in 94 LOL. I liked that it looked like I had a mohawk
I actually in LOVE with this kind of videos but you should that this un europe
You should totally do a 100 yes of children's games
Whats the name of the music starting at 5:14 ?
I couldn't even get a messy bun
You guys should do 100 years of chokers if theirs any
no, no, no.
For Black girls in the rebirth of hair styles in the 60's happen. French rolls w/ high buns in the front. Bulks of hair used for ponytails. Lol. All the styles were familiar and that is due to that was all we would see on television. In "urban areas" it was always fly.🤩
For the 1940s, it was practically a requirement for women to put their hair in some kind of updo, because they were the ones who worked in the factories and the production lines!
Im sorry but the "The clip is named after its shape, which resembles a banana" sentence reminds me of when I'm writing an essay and trying to hit the word count
i was looking for farrah fawcett hair in the 70s when i was watching this video
guilty of the space buns, especially with curly hair!
5:15 if Avril and Kim possible had a child
100 years of Cuban fashion plssssss!!!
Lol I used to use that amount of bobby pins back in the day
The last one, second 2010's one reminds me of Little My from Moomin
OK but you know some of us were alive during these era's right? The 90s butterfly clips.... no baby no that is NOT how they were used! :(
Sarah Michie
I know, right?!
I need style for medium length curly hair 4c or 4b
All I can think of it Barbie as the Island Princess, where she's getting ready for the ball and the monkey is like "teese your hair up 3 feet high"
