    Rob Liefeld is a treasure. Of course he has his faults as an artist but no else can say that their personality translates as directly to their art as he can. He's a reminder that good comics can be just fun comics. Not everything has to be Watchmen or Born Again. We as readers get to sample from the whole buffett.

    Love to see Rob. Im newer to comics so I dont have the baggage lots of other fans do about his work. I hope Rob can rebrand himself as an enthusiastic historian for comics.

      Honestly he's not nearly as bad as a lot of people make him out to be. Most of the examples people pull to point and laugh at are from inconsequential/expositional panels that Rob himself would probably admit he didnt really give a shit about- he just wanted to get it over with to get back to the action. People can say whatever they want about him but his comics were EXCITING, full stop. Notice those "lol liefeld" compilations seldom include his splash pages or action sequences. I would take his stuff any day over the agonizingly boring, 9 panel grids of only faces, postmodern garbage that passes for mainstream comics these days.

    I’d put my money on that Kirkman is the owner of these pages. Awesome deep drive here. So much insight. Thanks for being so open Liefeld.

    Great insight into this issue, into his process at the time, what things were like at Image and in his life. Very informative, touching and happy video.

    My best friend gave me the original Youngblood comic, and over the years I have gathered a collection. I was also able to buy a box of Comic Images Youngblood trading cards.
    Next month his my best friends birthday. I got his address and I’m going to send him all the Youngblood stuff I have. He’s gonna be stoked!

    i love this interview. I dont know if Rob is ever gonna see this but this is my fav interview on cartoonist kayfabe. he shows huge energy and passion and was kind and giving to SHARE some of the raw brutal truth of industry and insights behind the actual art. one could not ask for more out of an interview. i think this raw simple n effective communication is getting left behind a lot these days. im 35 and i am doing my first book (3/4 way done) - im gonna thank u all in the back of the book including Rob Liefeld - a true comic book warrior artist -

    Great interview, Rob is a blast. He is an honest guy, love his stories of the craft and the 90s insanity. I never caught that Youngblood marriage proposal, which is pretty bad ass. Comon, who else ever pulled that one on their lady? Proposal in a comic book!
    The man is full of facinating knowledge. Makes me want to pick up old Youngblood issues. Love old X-Force. Just a big fan of this guy's work.
    Always a pleasure to hear him talk.
    Thanks for a great interview, fellas.

    Just going to comment as I go watching this. XD I never noticed this before now but Rob Liefeld is almost a splitting image for Let's Dance-era David Bowie. Also I love this man, he's so energetic and real it's so dope. Also looking at that first page it's kinda funny because everything, even the sky and the bike, has muscles. Like it's so thicc. Like it's such a good vibe. Also it's so fun to hear him talk about his work, because it feels like he's really trying to grasp and key in on fan culture and what his fans want and satisfy that, it's a really important tool in storytelling to give your readers something cool that they can attach themselves to. Like he's been in comics for so long and he's still like extremely excited about the medium, you can just feel his enthusiasm like a spirit possessing your body, making you feel just as enthusiastic. Like he feels like someone who's just a walking encyclopedia on comics, except it's weird because it's like he helped write part of that encyclopedia.

      So many good issues in that run. The last page of #4 is the one of the most powerful pages in any comic every. The last panel alone is devastating. #26 is one of the best comics DC has every published.

  • @TheTonyFigueroa
    @TheTonyFigueroa Před 2 lety +19

    Rob Liefeld is the Hulk Hogan of comics and one of the best comic book artists this beautiful medium has ever featured because he did what a commercial artist is supposed to do: He made money for his publishers by producing work that people were willing to pay for. The best art style is one that someone is willing to pay for. His work, regardless of its merits, created an emotional reaction in his readers and people respond to emotional appeals far more readily than intellectual arguments. (Politics and advertising are built upon that premise). You could argue that there were/are artists whose work is better than Liefeld's and you could say that his line of comics were sound and fury signifying very little. But you'd be yelling into the wind. Rob Liefeld parlayed a limited skill set into massive success by being in the right place at the right time, putting in the work, self promotion and by building an emotional connection with his audience. Just like Hulk Hogan .
