Good feedback. What’s interesting to note about Singapore is the lack of fintech options. They granted some “licenses” lately but still not many options.

Back in the day, doing business with HSBC and Standard Chartered Bank in SE Asia was excellent. You got to know the local British branch managers who would even execute transactions for you by phone if you were out of the country and needed something done immediately. The branch managers were often in your social circle. All before the days of the internet. Always found both banks vastly more responsive and helpful than any US bank.

I find myself using crypto more and more as the ecosystem develops. Though it'll probably be a while until crypto is at a point where it can replace banks completely. Good banks are hard to come across, especially if you don't want to keep bucket loads of cash in the account. Even banks that charge high fees often aren't great.

Simply enroll in a vocational or post-graduate course in Singapore and you'll get a student visa that will let you open a bank account in Singapore worth minimum of S$1,000.

Got a call today from a banker at DBS Singapore about this. Turns out I'm correct. If you got a Singapore student visa, you just need to deposit S$1,000 and that S$350,000 or US$257,000 is only for privilege accounts.

I've been happy with DBS but they keep chasing me with their annual 'US Person' checks, even though I'm not a US citizen or even a US resident :/. And I've also experienced the 'your signature does not match exactly' with the one you used when you signed up issue as well, which is mildly infuriating.

My opinion is that if a bank asks to deposit a huge amount of money, run as fast as you can. The only one who is benefiting from this is the bank because they make at least 10% profits with your money, each year, probably even more. Better put your money on work as well and don't be an idiot and feed greedy bankers. That is just ridiculous! We live in a digital world where decentralized money will be the future and I hope that all banks will become obsolete! In no way someone should beg or accept unfavorable conditions just to open a bank account, wake up!
