    It's a remarkable achievement. I bought it back in 1999 . Never regretted it. Is probably my favourite atmospheric first person shooter to this day. It succeeds in escapism where modern shooters lack surrealism. It's isolating, eerie and interesting with basic platform elements added to the mix.

    It’s completely different from Quake 2 and is a great game. Well done to the devs.

    When I start a coop game I usually play through the Q64 episode. I never played Q64 so I love having all these new levels that I never played before. Q64 has great deathmatch maps too.

    Thank you sir, you have made me remember very endearing childhood memories of me playing all those levels so many years back, even with my father.
    Also I had no idea about the Berserkers animations not implemented originally, very interesting.

      Good news Quake64 comes with the Quake remastered for the PC from Steam = full control.
      if you already own Quake2 on steam plus loads of other goody's are given away.

    I like how Q264 is like a digest of best moments from the base game (and addons I think), it never overstays its welcome. Weapons and enemies are introduced really fast and are put to good use from the start. The fact that they moved the prison section to the end was a brilliant move, letting you tackle one of the more boring areas with big guns made it a lot more enjoyable.

    Its my personal favorite q2 campaign, no confusing back tracking and really awesome lighting and atmosphere. It is a bit short but in hindsight that does mean its easier to make it all the way through during quick play sessions. Also the deathmatch maps are great too

    One thing I love about Quake II 64 is it follows the example of the original expansion packs and starts the player right next to a Shotgun. My biggest disappointment when I first played Quake II on PC for the first time in 2000 was that you didn't start with a Shotgun like in Quake I so I'm glad the first two expansions and Quake II 64 fixed this. Quake II has my favorite Super Shotgun ever but I still have a soft spot for the basic Quake II Shotgun.

    I find the best way to deal with the N64 analog stick, is to put forward/backward movement and strafing on the D-Pad, then put aiming/turning entirely on the stick, so you hold the dpad in your left hand, jump with the L button, and aim with your right hand, like a modern controller. The only downside is for switching weapons you either need to let go of the stick, or bend your thumb back to hit A or B.

    Quake 2 64 is one of my all time favourites on the 64. Loved that it was it´s own game, felt like a mission pack in all the best ways. The remake did a great job in having the “feel” of the original, but sure, would I´ve loved to have the actual game in there, yeah, but no matter, I´ll take the remake anyday over none.

    Excellent video-- it brought me to your channel and i've really been enjoying your content!
    Quake II N64 was my favorite shooter back in the day. I had a kind of dim view of FPSs back then, as i had only briefly played Doom at a friend's and wasn't really into the over the top heavy metal-ness of it. And, i only had an N64. But on a lark, i rented Quake II at Blockbuster video and was quickly drawn into its much more moody, atmospheric presentation, like Doom combined Alien and The Thing. From there, i went on to the Turok games, Doom 64 and all the rest. It's so cool that all those games are coming out now, looking better than ever, and proving to be twice the fun of any modern game that's come out in the last half decade.

    • @mysterygamefightclub5835
      @mysterygamefightclub5835  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Games like Doom64, Turok, etc. opens a whole other dialog about what you can do creatively when you have limitations versus unlimited power, right? Modern games can do whatever they want, but so few of them move their genres forward. I think that contributes to the wave of "retro-inspired" games we've been seeing lately.
      Thanks so much for dropping in!

    It's odd noone mentions that Q2 64 is essentially just a Q64 mod because 2 used the same engine without any of the changes that came with the Q2 engine.

    • @mysterygamefightclub5835
      @mysterygamefightclub5835  Před 10 měsíci +1

      I had a feeling that no matter how much coverage Q2:E would get, the n64 campaign would get skipped over. This exact statement would get lost in the shuffle - it's not a 1:1 thing.

    Great review, I love Quake still got the original boxes when they came out on the PC back in the 90s, and all the sequels.
    I hope you can play with keyboard?

    I first played through Quake 2 N64 on an emulator, then I finished it on real hardware. I enjoyed it, but on subsequent playthroughs, it became less impressive to me. I'm really glad they ported the N64 levels to the new version though. I had been wanting this for years.

  • @Lefiath

    Playing this on Nightmare, it wasn't too bad, but it certainly felt like the least balanced campaign of the bunch, and I think the difficulty and lack of ammo probably stems from keeping the same amount of enemies, but with the improved AI. For example, that moving platform of doom over the toxic waste, I just let half of the enemies spawn without even hopping on, and I've tried to cheese most of the encounters that I could. I don't remember much, but there were parts that just dumped bunch of enemies onto me that felt... unfinished.
    Also, the Descent level is probably the worst map in the game. It's unique, but uniquely bad. Feels like an unfinished experiment. Otherwise, I really prefer no backtracking, what a horrible practice that was, just keep it simple and stop making mazes, where everything looks the same.

    • @mysterygamefightclub5835
      @mysterygamefightclub5835  Před 10 měsíci

      It really did seem like they ran out of gas toward the end, didn't it? Like they couldn't figure out how to raise the stakes, or properly plan for encounters. The answer was always "throw more garbage at them at a time" without any real consideration for enemy roles.

    What do you mean if the game is worth playing or not it's designed to be played that's the whole point. What is wrong with people asking stupid questions when they should already know the answer.

  • @jonathan19947
    @jonathan19947 Před 9 měsíci

    One thing I noticed about people these days they say and think stupid things and expect someone to believe its true about any little thing like games. Who cares theyre just simple meaningless things in the end such as video games besides movies books and music for entertainment related things. Sorry but youre not fooling me.

  • @Gamesta100
    @Gamesta100 Před 10 měsíci

    If you had to buy it separately no. In this bundle yes.
    I neve played it until this remaster and I thought how much I would have hated paying full price for the game on the N64 back in the day.
    Being different to the PC is good and I miss the days where console versions of PC games needed to be unique due to comsole limitations but Quake 2 64 is just too short. It would have been worth a rental only.

  • @yanceyboyz
    @yanceyboyz Před 10 měsíci

    "you can forget about precision" he's says while using the WORST option for controls......Turok controls always. Movement and strafe on C buttons and the analogue stick for aiming. It's the closest a console controller came to mouse and keyboard.

  • @Iwa_Lugosi
    @Iwa_Lugosi Před 10 měsíci

    Berserkers and these pasarite-techno-dogs are the most annoying motherfuckers on this side of the universe and beyond, and quake 2 64 spams a lot of them at the ending missions. For me, the no grav-space missions are the best, but, the mediocre and scarce music, in addition with poor design on the final part of the game, makes this version the worst of all, specially in it's time, when you had to use a genestealer-satisfyer shaped pad, and deal with low fps and poorly animated guns.
