How so I guess I missed something? I thought his main point was to not ignore the fact you are going to die and make plans for the future with that in mind.

As a dying cancer patient, I can say with authority: Peter Saul is wrong. Oregon's choice to give dying patients the right to die with dignity is such an amazing gift. Conventional medicine prolongs the agony of dying of cancer., and there is still no cure for most cancers. Hopefully, Mr. Saul will speak with more cancer patients about what happens when dying is prolonged, but no quality of life remains.

How can you want to give people more control on how they are going to die, and go against euthanasia ?... if the patient's choice is to go out without pain (in some cases there a no solutions) why wouldn't you consider the option ? (example from "Mar Adentro - movie)
Also (and I understand it's rather extreme) longer life means more population...unless you control births...which makes us fall in A FORM of totalitariam regime...where government would choose for you if you can get a kid or not.
I understand that it is important to know when to stop and let nature work if it's the patient's choice, having a plan matters.
+Gervais90 To sort of add to your comment, a great documentary by Terry Pratchett called Choosing To Die is about euthanasia and some other points associated with it. I think it opens an important door to the subject that could help shape what people think/know about it. Though, yeah, I found it sort of odd that he was against euthanasia.
This is brilliant; but why the anti-assisted suicide at the end? This seems to be the logical conclusion of the argument.

But are we? We've been having some good advancements on longevity. Don 't you think it's presumptions to be sure it's impossible to cheat aging when we have several decades of unpredictable medical and technological advancements ahead of us?

Medical aid in dying ("MAID") is increasingly accepted as a death with dignity. In Canada, e.g., 4% of all deaths annually are now with MAID. Some people who have lived a completed life would prefer to not have to wait for the body to fail in order to bring on death. They would appreciate having the choice to choose to fall asleep and die before the onset of a fatal illness. We have had birth control for the last 100 years. In a similar way, we should advance now to death control.
But you do save lives, lives are meant to be lived and letting them enjoy that a little longer is saving life, giving them more time
Saving a life from a early death is something else than "Live Saving" Because you can never SAVE it. it will always die
The cure for aging will come eventually and this horror show of disease and death will end. Until that time we should do everything possible to extend peoples lives.

Maybe we can solve e.g. the "health and nutrition" - problem someday but i doubt that this is solved so fast. When i learnd one thing from movies it is that we always thought progress comes faster (e.g. "back to the future").
Sometimes I think it would be best for all if it would again give a mass extinction. Hope i´m wrong ;)
Somehow it´s really exciting to think about the future. Maybe every sinlge imagination is wrong and only time will bring the rigth answer.
+Arve Bang Death by aging may be cured but that doesn't mean every disease,etc will also be cured. Maybe we will simply skip the problem by inventing good enough AI so it can carry on our legacy forever while conquering the universe.
Doesn't Australia or New Zealand have Advanced Medical Directives (living will)? I am not convinced that his numbers about how many people have no idea about this are correct. Most everyone I know has talked about this.
Really good video. Peter Saul spoke well. Though, I'm curious as to the issue of euthanasia(which is a word I've heard for the first time today). He's against it? That implies that there are some who agree with it. Completely in the dark here.
I agree with euthanasia. Watch "How To Die in Oregon" and "Choosing To Die" to get a better understanding. They may be both uploaded on CZcams.
+Monsieur' Cheezebogus Where are you from? I am just curious, because I never met a person who has not heard about it. I am for euthanasia. Mainly because I would want to die humanely, instead of slowly and painfully in case I get some horrible terminal disease. I also like the idea of being able to say goodbye to my loved ones, while I am still able to.

It is really important, as you mentioned at the end of your talk, the 0.5% of people who use Euthanasia, become privatizated to 99.05%. The conservative political parties could use the political slush funds, just like the privatization of the rest of the "health", welfare & custodial industries.

You might think that an intensive care worker talking about death would just be really boring and incredibly depressing...and you would be right.
Let's talk about dying ( that important) , but i think more important if we talk about what happened after death ?
bman098 that's mean we were born and lived and we did everything (bad&good) ,then we dead (That means we created in vain) , i don't think it will be the end (death) , not acceptable in my mind .
It's pretty pointless to talk about post death considering we have no scientifically reliable accounts on that experience. As for that concept being unacceptable, I think you're wasting thinking time. You'll either be dead and gone much like you we're before being born, or you'll be in some afterlife and doing fine. Either way what do you gain from thinking about it.

I don't find that concept sad, rather I'm happy I had the chance to be conscious even if it was only for a short while.
Outside of that absolute on the same wavelength when it comes to not caring when you don't exist.
I find it incredible that it's such a difficult concept for a significant number of people, and I wonder if the teachings of the major religions have played a part in poisoning people against non-existance by suggesting eternal existence.

Great tedtalk, but as an ICU doctor, Saul has an unavoidably biased position towards euthanasia and extended lifecare. Hmmm, is he truly altruistic in his intentions? Really convincing though, and funny references!
Saying, there is no a priori, is mainstream speculation. Saying, there is no a posteriori, is mainstream speculation. The latter is contradictive, if it is said by an empirist. This speaker of empirical evidence does not even embrace yet to be found empirical evidence. Very distrustful but convincing to the easily manipulated. It gives no room for anything but a single preconceived idea.
