Smoking Trout in a Teepee Smoker - Camp Cooking & Bushcraft in the Backcountry

- Comet and I go on a day trip into the backcountry to smoke a rainbow trout in a traditionally built smoking teepee.
In this trip, my dog and I head out with the intentions of doing an overnight camp, but due to some issues that arose, I decided to keep it simple for the day. I ended up building a traditional teepee smoker with natural materials and a piece of canvas, and smoke a fresh rainbow trout that was caught less than a day before. I do lots of axe and saw work, show some knife skills - some even with a new blade, do some basic firecraft, and more - all in the scenic views of the western Chilcotin backcountry.

Thanks! Sorry for the late reply. Just remember to keep the flames down inside the teepee. The canvas can get extremely hot otherwise

Great skills with the setup and cooking- smoked fish is well worth the effort. I'll be camping this winter with my new puppy- he'll be a year old by then. How far did you hike letting your dog carry his items?
This wasn't far at all, although I'm pretty sure she can handle it for longer. She only carries some food, some stuff for her paws, a water bowl, and her lead :). I hope it goes well with your new puppy!

Thank you! It would’ve been better without the damn wind, but that’s the Chilcotin for ya, haha! I believe I used some kind of lemon salt and pepper? I can’t remember exactly, but it was along those lines 👍

Sorry for the late reply. I'm just now getting back to these. This isn't far away from my new home - maybe 10 minutes. That's the cool part about where I live though, the town itself is in the bush. There isn't much difference between the two, aside from a few paved roads and a lot of fences 😆

I believe it was alder - similar to slash alder you see on the mountains. The dog's named Comet, and she's 11 now but still acts 2 :)

It was originally a 9x12' canvas drop cloth, but I cut it down to fit the teepee

This was a canvas drop cloth. It would’ve worked better if it wasn’t so windy the day I was out

How long did you smoke it for?
I believe around 8 hours? It would've worked a lot better if it hadn't gotten so damn windy haha!
You wanted to do an overnight but couldn’t because of issues??? I’m afraid to ask what the issue was. Will I be put down if I say you should of stayed out and made the intended video?
I did stay out the night, I just didn’t film the whole camping trip. My jaw locked up on me in the middle of the night, so being tired, hungry, and in pain, I decided to not finish the second day of filming the camping. That’s all, nothing special
