I own Brad Gilbert’s book “Winning Ugly” and it helped me so much during my coaching days
Congrats for getting Brad Gilbert on your channel. I’m impressed! Good interview also.
Brad is an American treasure.
Wow, listening to this after watching Coco win the US Open and the American men with Shelton included making the last 8 gives more clue about the wisdom and experience in tennis of the great BG! What a coach and analyst of this great sport!! 🎾👌🏻
Well said. He's a prophet.
I was a competitive junior player back in the day who grew up on red clay here in the US. Gave up tennis for 20 years and now back playing again. So interesting that when I play against most people these days my game is so different than them. I feel my game is so much more well rounded and tactically superior. Doesn’t mean I always win of course, just that I believe training on clay from a young age has a lot of benefits.
Legend in the house 🎉🎾
I grew up in 70s/80s. The first guy I really gravitated to was Boris. Then Agassi came along & tennis courts popped up everywhere. I played for hours a day, I just loved playing. Fast forward to last 5 years courts have deteriorated or turned into skate areas. Video games have changed the landscape. Majority of kids don’t ride bikes or even go outside sad. I quit watching tennis pretty much I saw BG play twice in finals in Memphis. I was there when Roddick hit the great shot to win in Memphis & that tournament doesn’t exist. I’m 52 now & miss what used to be but am excited with this crop of talent now. Federer Djokovic & Nadal locked everything up with their talent 👏 but I hope to see a resurgence in tennis from all ages.
Finally a video with the man himself!! was wondering if he'd ever be featured on the channel!!!
Good to see BG again. I remember seeing him shopping at the civic center farmers market. Brad Gilbert Tennis Nation--Harry's shop, was my local tennis shop.
Great Stuff here! I knew Coco would win too with BG there... I had just said she does not have enough weapons but he taught her how to use her weapons more effectively. Also Mac loved clay. Little-known fact he played on it growing up.
Oh wow! You've just leveled up Harry, Brad Gilbert!! Great content 👍
We’ll done episode, Harry. Need more content like this!
It ain’t hard to import red clay and build more clay courts in the US! I fully agree with Brad Gilbert
Congrats on getting BG. Great conversation! 👍
Brad used to come out and hit with us when we were #2 in the nation for community college teams. Foothill. This was in the late 80s. I'm old. 🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for this, love BG.
an absolute legend.
BG knows his stuff. Nice interview
You called it BG! Men’s final today at The Open… and, although Blake Shelton isn’t in it, you called it with respect to going deep into the tournament and showing that he is a breakout player!
I also grew up on red clay and definitely understand Brad‘s point of you when it comes to the nuances of the game of tennis and learning on clay as a foundation have a well rounded game.
I think it's also become more important because you learn how to slide which now also has become commonplace on hard courts.
Interesting this thing about clay, it makes a lot of sense.
Great stuff!
Wowzers! BG in the house.
always great insights from Brad, I think Fritz has what it takes to make a slam win
Nah. Fritz isn't good enough on defense. Too one dimensional of a player, which fits the era but he doesn't stand out.
Wow! BG, the man himself
100 percent agree with BG. He was the man that gave you junk balls that frustrated other players.
Ok, I'm impressed. Brad Gilbert is the Obi Wan Kenobi of tennis. Kudos for getting him on your channel.
It's the mentality that's key - it's key on the court to raise your game at the big moments and it's key off the court to get you training harder and smarter then the next guy. In the mens game the US has some talented players and they have all done well but they are all a little too laid back - they don't have the single minded intensity of an Alacaraz or a Rune.
does anybody know what jacket Brad was wearing? I thought it looked cool but I can't see a logo.
I think Brooksby and Opelka can also be in the mix once they come back from their injuries.
It's the coaching and the mentality #1
Say "Hey Coach!" to coach Chivi and wife Georgie! Greetings from Finland.
We have some awesome clay courts here in Central Florida
Real clay?
Brad's the best.
I think Korda is the mostly likely to be able win a major if he can put it all together
From US, there are great players, just round the corner but not turning that corner.
Tiafoe, Fritz are a scary player who ever they match with.
dang, big time guest, to say the least
Why no equipment talk with BG? Doesn’t he own the store? I want his spin on my tennis! 😉
We need more BG on the channel!!
Excellent interview! I don't always agree with BG's opinions but I always respect them. In my opinion, Roddick and Isner truly maximized their talent. Sadly, and this is really not a knock on them, Fish and Querrey did not. In Fish's case, it was really bad luck with his heart issues. He was really starting to gain steam when it first cropped up. For Querrey, he always seemed to pick up some knock just as his form started to pick up. In my mind, Querrey was more talented than Isner, almost as good a serve, maybe equal on the forehand, better backhand, better mover, and both were somewhat mediocre returners. But Isner was tougher mentally and was possibly a harder worker. Anyway, this latest crop of Americans is really talented. The two biggest surprises for me so far are Fritz and Paul. When I first saw them a few years ago I thought they were just solid players that probably would be journeyman players. But Fritz developed a big serve and forehand and Paul became a great mover and they're now legit top 20 players (Fritz legit top 10). Ben Shelton has real potential, but I still think Seb Korda might have the most raw talent. Hopefully he can stay healthy. Hopefully they can all stay healthy. I hope Coco Gauff can solidify her forehand. She won't win a Slam until she does.
Fritz always had the talent, big serve and forhand ....he improved after he worked on his movement...he was never a good mover...the results are there to show....tiafoe is another talented guy,the variety in his game is amazing....he could win a slam,if he improves his serve...
I'm not sure there has been anything "wrong" with US tennis, but rather, the big results were usually taken by these three guys that have been around for a little while. If you took these 3 guys out of the picture, then for about the last TWO DECADES, there would have been something like SIXTY grand slams that might have gone to other people.
Great interview. I love BG. I don’t think we know the name of the next American man who will be #1. US top athletes go to football, basketball and baseball. Many also go to soccer and hockey. There are a lot of barriers to entry for tennis in addition to competition for attention. I hope as we grow more educated about concussions more kids move away from contact sports.
Funny what he said about Coco…and then in 4 months, he’s the coach to coach her to her first slam win!
Assuming we don't include the women's tour, didn't Andre Agassi coached Novak. I thought he would be the last American coach of a number one player.
How did you get BG for the interview? That's impressive
The store is called braD Gilbert tennis nation
He works for Brad lol
I love Ben Shelton, one of my favorite active players, but his current game can not win a major with full attendance by the top of the tour. He is brand new to the tour and he is getting exploited left and right. However, I think a few years from now, maybe even just 18 months, he will have leveled up tremendously. No one comes onto the tour and dominates out of the gates. Roger took a few years, Rafa a little less than two, and even Alcaraz played a lot of tournaments prior to 2022. Ben will get there, I'm sure of it, and I think it's great that he's partnering with established guys for doubles draws to get some practice time with them, and also I think it's a good sign that he went to Barcelona this past week to see tougher competition vs. getting more rankings points from an easier top 16 or top 8 in Munich or Banja Luka. Until then, Fritz has the most complete game and has looked quite solid the past few weeks on his worst surface. I'm sure the next American slam winner is coming soon, but it might still be a year or two.
I forgot to mention that Korda is even more complete than Ben is at the moment, so he might legitimately have a breakout tournament any day now, but I think Ben's peak potential down the road might be even higher than Seb's. It will be interesting to see, and I'll be watching them all closely.
It is Donald Young, future ATP #1 according to John McEnroe!😮
the us is crazy on pickle ball. one of the biggest pickleball population in the world today. that explains why.
prophetic…
Brad Gilbert Tennis Nation store owner
I think Shelton can win Wimbledon if his backhand and shot placement gets a little better. I also like Tommy Paul’s movement but needs to work on serve a little. Tiafoe needs to work on his forehand but depending on draw could do well at Wimbledon or U.S. Open. Coco has to flatten out the forehand to win a slam. She got to a final so she is in the ballpark.
I’m with you on Shelton and Coco. They are both exciting players certainly with some improvements they could be contenders.
lol BG said "I will MAKE SURE Coco Gauff wins a slam in the next 18 months"
I like how Paul plays. He is not in the equation, because his game doesn’t look spectacular, but he could surprise a lot of people.
Paul could win some majors but I don't think he's Slam material unless he improves a lot.
Remember there is also a grass court season in Europe.
Me thinks BG coaching Korda is the answer
Honestly, no. The US Boys are getting closer for sure, but just looking at the statistics I do not see the one yet. Of course there could always be the magic run, but that chance oh boy. Ben has to prove himself, if the hype is real. Looking at the game compared to Carlos, Holger, Jannik etc. he is not there yet. Now on the girls side. WTA has always been so unpredictable, so in the next 18months, that Coco will win a Slam? My goodness that is a hell of a prediction. Maybe what he meant is, that Coco is much closer to win a Slam compared to Ben, Taylor or Tiafoe. That kind of statement I would agree. Give Coco some time.
Coco winning a slam 🤣🤣🤣. She hasn’t won anything above a 250. She is miles away from the top of Swiatek and Sabalenka and probably Pegula.
BG gets a like
Only thing D1 players do is go after big serve and big forehand.
He mentioned Coco Gauff then the world needs to listen.
Ben Shelton, U.S. Open finals 2023 💪🏼😊
I don’t know why there aren’t many American tennis players. The tennis crowd is begging for a top American tennis player. A lot of American kids are watching Football, Baseball and Basketball with tennis somewhere in the background. Tennis is a lucrative sport. Even if your not in the top ten in the world, you can still make a lot of money. I played baseball through college but if I could do it over, I would chose tennis.
Fritz?
Brad should give our US future champs some advice how to play ugly. might help haha
I don’t see a US #1 anytime soon. You still have Novak and the best young guys are from Europe with Carlos, Rune, Sinner and watch out for 18 year old Fils from France. Fritz, Paul and Tiafoe all very good and will challenge from time to time, especially Fritz but just not #1 material. Shelton and Korda have big upside so we will see with them. Nakashima, nice player but not enough weapons.
When Americans hear clay, they think green clay.... wrong!!!
I like Ben Shelton more than Fritz, but realistically I don't see any one of those two winning a slam.
Brad, despite your insights the US will never switch to clay as you suffer from NIH (Not Invented Here)syndrome.
bro I think Ben Shelton is still studying and taking classes on the road. He will be top-five eventually.
BG just say it. More RED CLAY in the US. Not HarTru
Such a great video Harry! In my humble opinion, Ben Shelton will be the chosen one! Not Fritz, not Tiafoe… he’ll have a good year this year. But next year will be his year. 🙏
Primero
Riley opelka Wimbledon 2024 champion guaranteed. Super easy barely an inconvenience.
Dude needs to shrink a foot
"sitting outside 'BG Nation'". Like the swallows to Capistrano, huh? Anyway you look at it, the competition is fierce. Just enjoy the spectacle, whoever is in winning form or condition.
The next American Grand Slam Men's winner will be William Blumberg, in doubles!
I don't see the US players winning a slam. Fritz has talent but it's limited. He can get to the quarters but that's it. Tiafoe is the same but he did manage to get to the semis once. Shelton who knows. I don't think even he knows. If one of them pulls it off, they would have to get a great draw.
I don't think a US player will be number 1 in a while. Djokovic, Alcaraz, Sinner, Rune are a long line to beat.
Tommy Paul ❤
You just randomly chat with Brad Gilbert? Nice “spin” on your content!
How someone that knows so little can talk to someone that knows so much???
Winning Ugly made me a better and more hated player!!!! 😂
Nakashima... nextgen titlist!
No one
very impressed with your success considering your debilitating speech impediment
Yeah clay tennis is a good developer considering they let the game get screwed up by equipment changes. You will never have another McEnroe, becker, rafter, or Edberg. Now it’s all about baseline play. So clay is the ultimate pusher baseline surface. If they had controlled the equipment development, you’d have a much more diverse game. Baseball, Golf, and hockey figured it out. Tennis is unfortunately controlled by idiots. A 6’10” guy can’t even consistently serve and volley in todays game. Todays game is completely one dimensional.
Tennis is going away in the US. Look at pickle ball making over courts
Coco is getting worst!
Oops
There is noone from the states that has the “it” factor that mcenroe, sampras, chang, agassi, courier, roddick had. Noone-not Fritz, Tiafoe, Korda, noone, nada, niet. So we need to scout and develop the 15-16 yr olds and find that new Jedi.
Ben Shelton. Has the it factor, will develop fast over the next 2 years.
@@nicks6813 i hope so. Havent seen him play much, but hes young, so will def root for him.
