    The reason why I cook and dehydrate my beans is 3 fold. Don’t want them getting too hard, don’t want to be found short on water to cook them and my house can’t take the weight of canned foods full of water weight. So everything is dried and put in jars. And that way you actually have more food in each jar.

    I’ve been making fast beans for a couple of years now. But cooking them in a slowcooker instead of an Instapot makes for a better product. Then I can also use them for meals in a jar.
    They cook faster and with much less water. Great for emergency preparedness and camping

    I've never dehydrated beans and will give it a try. I recently got some ideas of mixes and dehydrated meal ideas from some backpacking cookbooks online in Kindle. I would like to try dehydrating a Spanish soup that my family makes to have on hand for convenience, and with what you are demonstrating, I think I can do it. Having these to take with me and use when I travel will save money, and I just like my family's soup.

    I didn’t know that dry beans would get past getting soft! I cooked up a big pot of black beans, knowing they had been on the shelf for a while, and sure enough, they would not get soft. They wouldn’t even blend well with a stick blender. Determined to NOT throw them out, I dried them in their gritty-almost-refried-bean state, then put them in the big blender to powder them. I plan to reconstitute them for refried beans or maybe add more seasonings and make a bean dip mix. I think they’d make a good thickener for soups or gravies, too, if I wanted to add some protein or fiber, or in place of bread crumbs in meatloaf. Thanks for the headsup! Now I won’t be taken by surprise with crunchy beans!

    I learned about dry beans from either you, Mary @Mary's Nest, or Rosered homestead. I can't remember! But I love and respect you all! BUT one of the reasons I jumped at the chance was to have a protein snack I could eat out of the jar in my "hurricane pantry". Also, because it doesn't take much water or heat to cook up, dry beans are an excellent solution to feeding yourself with minimal energy/water spent. Now, I have not powdered any to make refried beans later. BRILLIANT! That is definitely on my list of things to do. Thank you so much, Heidi!

    Deep South Bama with Mr. Tom has a video from 4 years ago. If you have a lot of beans and they cook up hard , he has some things to try. And the baking soda added the way he says does work. But drying them is a great way to avoid them getting that hard.

    I cooked a whole lot of black beans for the purpose of making them more like instant rice, when you cook the beans and then you dehydrate them then you all you have to do is add hot water because they're already cooked That's why you cooked the beans it makes it much easier to rehydrate and recook the beans, so in reference to the rice it's like instant rice that rice has been pre cooked so all you have to do is add hot water😊

    I am very interested in a video explaining getting organic quinoa “completely prep ready.” I think what I am trying to say is pre-rinsing it and then dehydrating it for long-term storage. I don’t eat much meat so quinoa is my favorite prepping seed/grain. The problem is it takes SO much water to get to a clear water rinse then you still have to dry it if you want to store it. Water is plentiful right now but who knows what the future may bring. Thank you for sharing all your knowledge, Heidi💞 We sure appreciate you!

    One thing that happened to me that I hope won't happen to very many people. I had several jars that were vacuum sealed and surprisingly it was the ones that were sitting on the concrete floor that I had the problem with. The ones up higher on the shelves were not affected for some strange reason. We had a tornado come through very close to our house, within just hundreds of feet. I was checking the doors and windows and I could hear ping after ping. After everything was over, I thought that was jars; the 15 or 20 jars I had sitting on the concrete floor had all lost their seal; I'm presuming because of the air pressure of the tornado being so close. Luckily everything was fine and I just resealed them.

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  Před 5 měsíci +1

      While there are many things that can be stored in mylar, it is not my preferred choice. Anything with sharp edges such a meats, pastas, and more can poke holes in the mylar, especially if you attempt to vacuum seal in any form. However, mylar is more earthquake resistant, lighter in weight and can take up less room if you can find a good way to store it. In boxes or buckets is easiest with bags

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  Před 5 měsíci +1

      There seems to be varying opinions on it but I think much if it depends the type of bean and how they are stored. For the most part they should be fine for a couple of years and some can be fine for up to 10 years before getting too hard to cook. Rotation is simply the best way to go but dehydrating the cooked beans will extend their storage time and make them easier to prepare when needed

      Thank you for the prompt reply. Though I did find the answer to my question quickly, simply by enjoying your videos. Your channel provides facts in a nonsense way that I appreciate.
