In this week’s episode of Tying Tuesdays, watch as Max ties his Big Eyed Mouse!
The Big Eyed Mouse is most similar to the master splinter, which is a great fly, but I consider the Big Eyed Mouse to be superior to all the rest. After multiple seasons guiding up in Alaska, this is my go-to mouse pattern. There was a lot of R & D that went into making this fly just right. I have beef with all the other mouse patterns out there because while they might cast and look great in the water, the actual number of fish hooked up is far less than the pattern I have created.
The 3mm foam and the doubled-over head keeps this fly floating high and swimming right when it has been drowned a couple of times by a bad cast or a trout eat. When wet, the chinchilla rabbit strips are a very accurate representation of a mouse that has fallen in the water, and the glow in the dark eyes make it visible during low light hours. All in all this fly is worth a tie, and teeth marks all over the foam will make you want to tie some more.

Awesome fly. I haven’t tied any mice yet but now I want to give this one a shot. Oh, and nice beard dude.

I have had problems with the chenille tail getting beat up. So now I put on a thin layer of flexible UV glue to toughen it up. It does also stiffen it, but that doesn't seem to make a difference in the action of the fly. It does help keep the tail from wrapping around the hook.

Hi Max. I have a question concerning the width of the foam. Are you making the width to match the hook gap? Thanks enjoy your videos.

Hi Darrell, here's the scoop on the foam from Max:
"The foam should be just wider than the hook gap if you are using the same Kona hook. I try to make them just under an inch or so in width. You just want to make sure you don't have too much foam, and you want to make sure you have enough to give it good floatability. Cut one out that you like and then use that as an outline for the batch you want to tie. When starting a session, I cut all the foam together so the are all equal"
      Hope this helps, thanks!
