BMW is underselling the engine of the 540i. i had my 2018 540i tested on a dyno before applying an engine tune, and completely stock it was putting down 380+ horse power and 380+ ft-lb of torque.

I drove the 530i today and I can tell you that it feels a lot quicker in real life than via CZcams video. I think I'll go with the 530i over 520d which I considered in the first place.

I also drove my buddy's G31 530i xDrive recently and I am amazed. Real life feels much different, the B48 is surprisingly smooth, sounds great when floored (despite being a 4-cylinder!). Did some pull tests from 3rd and 4th gear (manual) from 1200 RPM. You press the gas in Comfort and it's not even half a second, only the slightest moment and the car starts to smoothly accelerate. Like honestly, you don't need more than that in your daily car, the acceleration towards 140 km/h is very good. Go for 540i only if you can afford it and if you drive like 50% of the time of even more on autobahns + you drive plenty of kilometers annually. Only then you can somehow make use of the power delivered by glorious B58. In any other case, the B58's power cannot be fully used on a daily basis, without breaking the law seriously and putting your driver's license in danger.
You need to keep that in mind, because the above is just the Autobahn blast, so of course the B58 is gonna be faster, this is exactly where it shines. But it is considerably more expensive to buy (probably higher register costs due to engine displacement of over 2.0 L), more expensive to maintain (insurance, more oil, more injectors, coils, etc.), consumes more fuel especially in a city traffic and will almost always come with xDrive system, which also adds roughly 70 kg to the weight and generates bigger resistance, resulting in an even higher fuel consumption.
Just answer yourself whether all of that is really needed, whereas 530i can do majority of that for a lower price and can be probably tuned to around 300 PS.
The 540i really doesn’t cost that much more than 530i as it’s not even an m sport so 540i is the better value. Whereas the m340i is $20k over the 330i
@@Father-klovkoski I have actually just bought myself a 530i xDrive. The performance of this car is way more than enough. I cannot even push the pedal to the metal, else I am already in danger of losing my driver's license.
While 540i might not be that much more expensive to run, it is significantly more expensive when it comes to the purchase - at least in Europe.

530i is outstanding, the shift to higher rates of speed is so smooth you don't realize how fast you are going. BMW is sporty while classy, I still baby mine, but when its called for I open her up and she PERFORMS.

Nice video! I bought a 530i. I thought the 4 cylinders is great and enough powerfull for my daily use. Probably not as smooth as the 6 cylinders but need to visit gas station less frequently ;)

Back in Europe I would go for 540i. German autobahn is worth that extra money. Here in Canada, 540i seems a bit like a show off just to impress your neighbour, since you barely drive more than 130kmh, otherwise you will lose your license very quickly. $10k difference is not worth it in NA.
The b58 engine in the 540i is still undefeated though. I'd go for a 6cil over a 4cil all day! To each his own of course 😁
After driving a 3-litre V6 Audi A6 C7 with 245 hp for two years and recently being able to test the BMW 530i for a week, I was really impressed.
Positive:
- A lot of space in the interior, even for drivers 2 m tall.
- Sports seats are pleasant and the affordable Dakota leather also looks good. However, comfort seats in the A6 are much more comfortable.
- Despite having only 4 cylinders, the engine is very dynamic, but quiet and accelerates significantly better than the A6 with 6 cylinders, especially from 100 km/h. Overtaking and sprinting on the motorway works great.
- Very good usability with iDrive.
- Navigation fast and unobtrusive.
- HUD large, sharp and always clearly visible.
- Super adaptive LED headlights.
- Best parking assistant for a long time: Image of the rear view camera is pin sharp, bright and augmented with important information, parking sensors are fast and detailed.
- Average fuel consumption of more than 10 l /100 km is difficult to achieve despite a lot of inner-city driving and frequent speeds of more than 200 km/h on the motorway.
- Steering is at speeds up to 100 km/h the best in a long time.
- It's simply fun to drive.
Negative:
- M-Sport suspension has a bad roll stability, good wheel alignment is very important especially without xDrive.
- Wind noise at doors at speeds from 120 km/h louder than with the A6.
- Outside noise in the interior generally louder than in the A6.

Still driving my 2011 5 series. I have had 5 Mercedes benz..and i will never go back after owning a BMW.
Big different is when accelerating at high speed. But you don't get to do it in daily driving or out of Germany. I will say both are good, depending on what you need
I know this is a 4 year late reply lol... but I recently went out with a buddy of mine on a Friday night. He had a 530 loaner and I had my 540i. At low speeds he couldn't keep up with my acceleration.... and then at high speeds.... it was game over also lol. BUT I was impressed with the 530 for being just a 4 cyl.

Many cars in the US are limited at this speed of about155mph mostly because of tire speed ratings.

Exactly. The in-line 6 revs up so much quicker than any 4 cylinder because hardly needs any counterweights for balancing.

I went from a G30 530i to a G30 540i. I wasn't 100% sure I would see enough difference to justify the cost. But now I've had it for 6 months, I'm annoyed I didn't do the upgrade sooner!
You can get the same body style as the 540i just spec the car in m sport, difference is only the engine,
Entrylevel have round exhaust tips? Nah, you could get the Pre-LCI model with all the top engine etc. in a luxury or Sportline with the regular round exhaust tips.

@@Conservator. Considering a 2018 540i vs a w205 mercedes c63s. A tuned 540i would match if not be faster than the MB. More reliable, a better daily driver and what not. But still the AMG is an AMG🥴

@@excusemeforbeingsorry I own a 2017 540i and it’s amazing. It only has the M sport tuning kit on it for 355 HP. The ZF 8 speed and the inline 6 are just great.
I like the new MB design and the MBUX looks very nice too. I never considered a MB though 😉
Edit: If you plan to seriously tune the 540i I you might want to consider an x-drive.
@@Conservator. You don't plan on tuning it? Honestly i'm not a big fan of the w205 exterior design but they perform and sound so good stock... It's tempting. Still undecided over the F80 M3, W205 MB c63s and the G30 540i. The most practical choice would be the 5er, the most aesthetically pleasing would be the M3 competition and I just fell in love with that AMG engine on the C63s. Also I do agree the new MB design and MBUX is a big step forward.
On the 1st half of the video, he is driving with a tailwind, therefore, it looks a lot faster whereas on the 2nd half he is driving against the headwind, therefore, a lot slower.
Of course +2 cil, +100hp, +100nm
What about the price?
the 540 is rated 0 to 60 at 4.7 seconds and this model is quieter than the previous gens. the 530 is quieter than the f10. its just how bmw built the car to muffle out the sounds

That 530i is creepy quiet, 6500 rev and can't hear it at all. I'd still take a 530d over it though. If I went for a petrol I'd get a 3 liter.

I see this a lot, even in models that as far as I can tell are otherwise the same. So what do the different wheels mean?
John Grabowski the m-sports package adds that steering wheel you see on the 540i aswell as some other things

@AutopTopNL: With regards to handling on the g30. Have you guys tried an G30 with the Integral steering (4 wheel steering option), M-sport chassi and xdrive. Some reviewers say its just as agile as an 3 series in that configuration. I think selecting options on G30 is really important for what the car should be. Most reviewers have VDC 223 option which makes the car sits higher and springs are still soft and swaybars are also thinner, compared to M-sport 704 option.
I thought the 540i had it
if you add VDC you remove the M-sport chassi that is firmer and has different swaybars also. IAS Integral Active Steering is an expensive option, that is not standard in M-sport package.
I have a 3 series LCI with adaptive M dampers and I test drove 5 series with M suspension. It's not as agile and has way more body roll. However if you take adaptive dampers with the 5 series then it can turn almost flat and i'd say it's close to the 3 series.
The springs and swaybars are still set to comfort so it does not make sense. If you try to brake with ddc the front dives even in sport + and when you floor it the rear squats. This is one of the achilles heels of fluid based dampers. Even if you increase the liquid density the springs are still soft. Swaybars are also thinner in DDC compared to M-sport division based dampers.
thats just flat out dangerous in winter weather. the 340 is too light

steering wheel and dash are the same except for the colors the only real interior difference is the leather seats in 540i.

530i is less costly and 540i is more powerful.
I drive 530i and ya for my needs it is quite good. But i felt like commeting here to see if any one else thinks it is totally insane and stupid to take hands off wheel when going excess of 200km/hr. There are other ways to die in which you die alone and not take others to afterlife.

It is much more important that you choose the M-Sport package. It is crucial! Even the 530i cannot be extended at all.
