  • ( www.TFLcar.com ) The 1959 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint & Spider are iconic Italian cars hand built by both Pininfarina and Bertone that continue to inspire new car design to this day.
You probably already know that the 2013 Dodge Dart is loosely based on the current Alfa Romeo Giulietta. But as you may have guessed Alfa Romeo Giulietta has a long history dating way back to the 1950's.
In this TFLcar Classics Revealed video we check out the 1959 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint & Spider to trace the deep roots of the new Dodge Dart.

That was my first car in 1961. It was so rare in the States I really didn't know what I was buying. Now in old age, it is my fondest memory.

I owned a 1969 Alfa Spyder for a number of years and absolutely LOVED that little car. If I had the money, I'd buy one today. 1750cc's and Mechanical fuel injection; SWEET.

i never told anyone my Sprint (1960, blue) had a hemi engine, but i do recall the young gas station attendant impressed by "the smallest V-8" he'd ever seen

My Dad bought a new 1960 1300 Giulietta Sprint in Vancouver. He loved it, but during one of his "bad boy" escapades he smashed it up - TWICE! This scuppered his intentions to race it at Westwood Racing Circuit. Both times the bodywork was beaten out and leaded-filled. The powder-blue was changed to '57 Ford metallic blue (AAAAAHHHHH!!!!) ... and some parts had to be fashioned out of bits and pieces because the Alfa factory neglected to fill parts orders from the dealer/distributors. The ruined rear light lenses were supplanted by Ford Anglia types on stainless steel backing plates. The front grill was from a Spyder model - and not a very good fit. One day Dad sold it bought a used '59 Mercedes Benz 220-S. He said the Alfa's handling had suffered from the crashes.
I adored this car! And I still do - more than any other car on the planet! And I have driven (not owned) some pretty exotic machines. It remains my dream car, but I fear that I will never awake to find a dream come true. It was extremely comfortable, and it rode like silk. I still have the rear badge, a key fob and the manual in a handsome grey leather? case.
There were some faults. In cold weather it sometimes refused to start. In the hard northwestern rains, the wipers once quit. Another time the headlights dimmed and failed. The ignition system was ... er ... crankey, and it may have partially caused one the smash-ups. One owner told me that he resolved these glitches - he tossed out everything marked 'LUCAS' and replaced same with 'Delco-Remy'.
Thanks "FLC" for all of this! I was particularly impressed by the explanation regarding the long-travel 1950's Italian adaptive suspension due to post war roads conditions. This answered my long-standing question as to why this car leaned so much in corners. When vintage-race prepared, I guess this is adjusted.

Yah, that note at the end. They were quite expensive. But by the time I was growing up in the late sixties, early 70s, they were affordable. I always wanted a Giuletta Sedan, but they just weren't available much in the US. They looked very plain, but you could swap out the 1300cc/4 speed for a new 2000cc/5 speed very easily as long as your Giuletta was a 101 series.
