  • Let's get loopy! The Boss RC-20XL Loop Station
    The Boss RC-20XL Loop Station is a powerful tool to let you add more depth and scale to your performances, as well as a great study and practice aid. As a solo performer especially, this can allow you to record key phrases, or a verse, and then loop it back so that you’re free to play lead, really broadening the sonic palette for a show. You can layer loops on top of loops. You can also pre-record multiple loops, such as verse, chorus, bridge, and then use an added FS-5U extension footswitch to swap from loop to loop while playing live.
    In this video I go over some of the key features, as well as few things that tripped me up as I grew familiar with the pedal.

    I am very interested in creating ambient "soundscapes." My pedalboard has enough to get me started.
    Like others have noted, my RC-20 has been packed away for a few years.
    This will be useful as I re-learn how to use the looper. Thanks for your video. Quite helpful.

    Very cool--I just picked up a used one on Reverb and am super excited to tinker around with it. I normally play with a full band but scheduling conflicts don't always allow everyone to make it... I think having a loop pedal will allow us to add some depth to the music if we are understaffed. Will definitely require some practice to get familiar and comfortable with the unit, but think it will be super handy. Thanks for the video--super helpful and much more enjoyable to watch than reading the user's manual, ha ha.

    I'm using the first ever model in that whole RC line, which is RC-20 . It's got 5 and a half minutes of recording time but that's enough for my needs and more limitations we got more creative we get!

    This was a great video for me, because I abandoned my RC-20XL a few years back after struggling with it. I was also a very poor lead guitarist and I have been working on that since retirement. Anyway, I just picked it up again and after buying a power supply - yeah, these things easily get lost, don't they? - I sought out a refresher course on the pedal and stumbled on this excellent no nonsense video that for me is exactly that. I have the double pedal (for another use) but now I know I can use it with the Looper, that'll be the next task after getting the basic set up learned. Thanks a lot.
    Now, Ronan Conroy is a fine Irish name and your pronunciation of "any" makes me think that your Irish roots are not generations away from Eire. I am an Irishman, but born to an Irish family in Liverpool, England. Curiously, my Grandmother was a Conroy from Connemara and you have facial features which make me wonder whether we are distantly related. From your nose down you could easily be my cousin. We also share the chin cleft and the deep set eyes and long forehead. But I have brown eyes, not blue. If you ever do a DNA test, please do it with a company called My Heritage - as that would confirm or reject my above thoughts. I discovered a lot of relatives all over the world after doing mine (plus a couple of shocks, I was not expecting).
    PS I love your facial expressions when demoing the drum sounds 😉.

    Thanks so much for the video! I have a little question. What if i have a first 2 bar loop (two chords) and then i wanna make a 4 bar loop? Is there any option or do i have to play that first two chords twice to fit? Thank you!

    • @ronanconroy5282
      @ronanconroy5282  Před 3 lety +1

      You mean you've recorded a 2 bar loop, and then you want to turn that into a 4 bar loop so that you can start overdubbing 4 new bars on top of it? I'm pretty sure that's not possible, but maybe I'm just not finding the option.
      I think you have to record the full 4 bars. It can be annoying because if you're recording that first loop live, you kinda want to just intro into the song with 2 bars and then start the vocals or the lead guitar, rather than have to play an entire 'blank' verse before you can start building it up.
      I'd love to be proved wrong on this, though!

    • @doomcrusher3
      @doomcrusher3 Před 3 lety

      You can use more than one save slot so on slot has your intro And then switch to second save slot so it will be cued to begin when the first one ends

  • @HowardBaileyMusic
    @HowardBaileyMusic Před 10 měsíci

    I'm really surprised these pedals don't have a back up to computer or thumb drive function. I just bought the rc20 and it seems to me once you've used up your 10 phrases that's it. You have no choice but dump phrases to make anything new. I realise it's old tech but that limitation is a deal killer.
    Also no metronome output... crazy

  • @wjkuhl
    @wjkuhl Před 2 lety

    Question! I want a different guitar tone on my solo, I have a boss ninja amp so there is built in acoustic settings distortion settings etc… is it possible to record clean rythym guitar on the loop station and then have my solo have some distortion on it? I tried recording my guitar into the loop station with the clean preset, but when I toggled my amp to the “lead” preset which is essentially some distortion for the solo it also toggled my loop station so the backing track recording also had distortion. Is it possible to have two separate tones out of one amp?

    • @ronanconroy5282
      @ronanconroy5282  Před 2 lety

      I think I've had this problem, depending on the order in which I connect the pedals. If I connect the loop station before the distortion, then the signal coming out of the looper goes into the distortion pedal next and everything will be distorted if the pedal is on. I find it best to have the looper one of the last, if not the last, pedal, in the chain, with the output going into the amp. That way the distortion or other effects will only affect what goes into the looper, not what comes out.

    Hi! Just wondering, are you able to put in two instruments into this instead of 1 instrument and 1 mic? Thanks

    • @ronanconroy5282
      @ronanconroy5282  Před 3 lety +3

      Honestly I've never tried it, but the feedback I've seen online suggests the mic input has a lower impedance and that a DI box might be necessary to convert an instrument signal. Here're a couple of posts I read:
      www.reddit.com/r/guitarpedals/comments/36du3t/running_an_instrument_through_mic_input_boss/

    • @ronanconroy5282
      @ronanconroy5282  Před 3 lety +2

      @@joel3730 I don't know, I'm no expert but I wouldn't advise it. Was just reading this too: "If you need to, for example, plug a keyboard (high-Z) into a mixer channel mic input (low-Z) via an XLR cable, it is advised to put a DI box (Direct Inject box) in-line to convert the high-impedance signal to a low-impedance signal before the mic input."
      mynewmicrophone.com/microphone-impedance/
      DI boxes seem to run from $20 to $200+

    The unit was given to me. I assume I need 1. adapter to plug into electricity 2. Chord to plug in my acoustic/electric guitar and 3. Amp and chord to play the sound. Is this right?

    • @ronanconroy5282
      @ronanconroy5282  Před 3 lety

      Yeh the Boss website says use this power supply:
      www.boss.info/us/products/psa_series/
      But you could probably also use one of these:
      www.amazon.com/Truetone-NW1-1-Spot-Adapter/dp/B0002GZLZQ/
      I have the One Spot, as well as a Boss pedalboard with built-in power, and both seem fine.
      You'd need two guitar cables - one from guitar to pedal, one from pedal to amp.
      And yes, amp as well. It looks like you can connect headphones to the output socket, but the manual says do not do this as it will damage the headphones. Might even damage your ears, I don't know...

    can someone respond to this? I used the RC3. I seem to need the extra pedal to turn it off. Do you think the operation of the 2 pedal RC20xl is easier than the 1 pedal RC3 ? I'll take the RC20xl just for the 2 pedals. I think.

    • @ronanconroy5282
      @ronanconroy5282  Před rokem

      I've actually been curious to see if anyone replied to your comment because I've often seen people use the RC3 and seem to get on fine with it, but it seems it'd be more work and trickier. But then the two pedal option is huge in terms of pedalboard real estate.
      I do also have this tiny looper: czcams.com/video/jv8A6mlWJ1U/video.html
      Which is decent, but it needs a lot more memory about how many times to step on it in order to get each function to occur.
