One thing I’ve noticed with Jackson Browne’s vocal in this song is not only that rich, caramel tone, but he’s also using using dramatic punches to add a layer of percussion to it. He’s just brilliant and unique and so undervalued in the history of music.
Very Definitely Under Valued!
Except that he’s my favorite, so some of us don’t undervalue him! His writing and composition, emotion, who he plays with, DAVID LINDLEY, how he sings, poignant lyrics… ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I think you are dead on correct. And in contrast, when he quietly sings "out into the cool of the evening strolls the pretender" and all the accompaniment drops away, the impact is stunning. It's like a velvet punch to the soul.
"And the Church bells ring..." how sad such a lovely, uplifting and ancient sound has been silenced, it seems forever. We can only pray "ṣalāt" 5 times a day won't replace it. Thank you, Fil. God bless
What a Great Songwriter, Musician, Singer ...;.;one of the All Time Greats
But extremely overlooked today. As are many artists from the '70s. There were just so many across the entire music spectrum.
Bloody fantastic and he's done so much for so many artists
"Fill in the colors in each others paint my number dreams". What a great line. Awesome song done by a great songwriter. Love me some Jackson Browne.
Hi Mr jinks . It is a beautiful line .What if you pick someone who doesn't come with full palette? 🙄!
I'm going to find myself a girl
Who can show me what laughter means
And we'll fill in the missing colors
In each other's paint-by-number dreams
And then we'll put our dark glasses on
And we'll make love until our strength is gone
And when the morning light comes streaming in
We'll get up and do it again
Get it up again
What a wonderful lyricist this guy is :-)
I Know - I Love That!
I love that too. It's full of great lyrics, start to end. One i like as well is " I'm gonna rent myself a house in the shade of the freeway". I might live a sheltered life but i can't think of many freeways that have shade. Such a clever brilliant songwriter.
Jackson has been my favorite musician/songwriter since 1972. I couldn't be a bigger fan than i have been most of my life. This is one of my favorite videos. I think he was 47 or 48 here. I;m so glad i found your site, i watch it more than you know as i stay pretty quiet and take it in.
I love Jackson's music and songwriting abilities. I also think he is gorgeous. Very handsome man. Listening to his music brings back a lot of memories. When you are 67 it works out that way. Fil always does a wonderful job analyzing this music. Fil is very intelligent while listening and describing the music. Thanks Fil for listening to this great classic. ❤️🌹❤️
I agree, and I so can relate to your comment!
“The Loadout/Stay; Hold on Hold out; Running on Empty; Doctor in my Eyes; The Pretender, etc” Jackson Browne … wow! What a package, what a gift. Just lovely to listen to forever. JB is the gift that thankfully just continues to keep on giving.
So many great songs given to us through Jackson Browne! Was always into his music...just such a part of my long life.
Caught between the longing for love, and the struggle for the legal tender. What a great line! This song is almost like the lines of an Eastwood or Duke Wayne movie for memorable dialogue.
He’s an amazing storyteller! You can relate to any one of his songs and use it as a canvas for some experience you have had at one point in life. Cool Fil👍👍
I have to confess that I have always been so enamoured by Jackson's skill as a wordsmith that for me the instrumentation tends to fade into the background as I get wrapped up in the story. Thanks for providing the push I needed to really appreciate the totality of the performance!
I love that whole album. That and Running on Empty.
They were on different albums, if I recall correctly. But both great!
@@colleenmahony8803 Yep, two different albums, each with a great title song.
I got to meet the whole band in St. Petersburg, FL at the Bayfront center. It was their Running on Empty tour. It was a great show and a great band.
True love could have been a contender..
Not what money could buy..
It was just something about the 70's..... No other explanation required.
Saw JB at a small Cambridge, MA coffeehouse in the early 70s - just him and a piano, singing those great classics from his first albums. I'll always remember that night ✌👱♀️
Superb analysis and break down on Jackson Browne... a nice way to start the weekend off with the sounds of Jackson! thanks Fil and keep Rockin' through the years.
I've loved Jacksons songwriting, singing, musicianship, overall artistry and great looks for a long time
Thank you Fil...You are another talent who can speak well and express your views so intelligently
Thanks for the kind words!
'Doctor My Eyes', i have always loved Jackson Brown, this song is so moving, beautifully done, lyrics, guitar playing, Ballad like, his voice is something to behold, his band compliments him very, very, well! Great break down Fil, another on point Analogy......

Thank you for recognizing the talent and genius of Jackson Browne. It was nice to watch you enjoy listening to the song and appreciate your insightful commentary.❤️
Younger Or Older - How Can You Not LOVE Jackson Browne!🎸 You Can Take Any Line From This Song & It Is Amazing ...Such A Gifted Songwriter!💗 Great Analysis, Fil!
Love Love Love Jackson Browne!! Awesome analysis!! 💓💓💓 So many great songs and many memories made listening to him!! 👍👍👍
There is no finer songwriter or performer alive today than Jackson Browne... he can perform with a backup band, but when I saw him, he had about 17 guitars on a rack in front of him and a piano... and he just mesmerized us all with song after song and spoken stories in between. Thanks for this. The Pretender is a masterful song, but also a masterful story. What a writer.
Back in the late 1980s, I saw Jackson play with his own band; Lindley and El Rayo X were the opening band. El RayoX were great but the classic-rock type audience didn't have any patience for this strange-looking guy that apparently they never heard of ( I guess they never bothered to read the liner notes to JB's records). Part way through Jackson's set with his own band, everybody else left the stage, the roadies wheeled out a piano, Jackson sat down and started to play, and we heard the strings of a violin come through the PA system as Lindley strolled out, playing the violin. They did a half a dozen duets together: piano and guitar, guitar and violin two guitars, and so on. It was *magical*, but the obnoxious and somewhat drunk crowd would not shut up. They kept calling out for other songs, and although some tried to clap along with the music, they had been drinking and couldn't keep good time, and anyway it wasn't really appropriate clap-along music. At one point, Jackson said to the crowd, "y'all are asking for some really old songs. I guess this must be the valley that time forgot!" An audience can make-or-break a concert.
Classic Jackson Browne 🇺🇸
Jackson is the man...all the guys want to be him...all the girls want to be with him...Great job as always Fil.
Great one, Fil.
Jackson Browne will continue to inspire me forever. He has made an impact on this world with his voice and writing ability. Without a doubt, an adept wordsmith legend who has always been able to speak truth and convey emotion in each tune.
~ Tylor Walsh
Nice. I've loved Jackson Browne since the beginning. Even bought his book in the mid '80s (its here, somewhere). Fave album cover, 'Late For The Sky". Family had a '54 Bel Air so,,,
Here, fave line, "....i've been aware of the time going by. They say in the end, its a wink of an eye....". a little sick of it all....Lines been in my brain for weeks..
oh, can't forget, Jackson lent his Dumble and i believe studio time to SRV for "Texas Flood" but y'all probably knew that already.
Fil, you always add a perspective that I had never considered. Always loved Jackson. Thanks!
What a wordsmith.💖Amen.
Absolute respect for your knowledge of “music theory”, and songwriting......While I enjoy listening to musicologists break down my favorite songs, I admit that I find a little selfish solace, in that I can enjoy music and find “wonder”, and “awe” in the magic these artists create, without understanding the “mechanics” behind it.......Really enjoyed the video, and for what it’s worth, “Late for the Sky”, is my favorite JB song....Maybe, one day you can enlighten us with a reaction.
One of the most beautiful songs ever written. Ugh. Glorious.
Some people listen to music and some hear music, you encourage people to hear the music. Jackson Brown is one of the greatest story tellers of our time. IF ever do one of his songs again would you consider "For a Dancer".
Love everything the guy ever did. Incredible range of skills.
Thank you Fil
Yer "you know" 🤘 ROCK
Jackson was so gorgeous and deep.I love him ,along with the other great singer- song writers- Jesse Winchester, and Billy Joel before he sold out!
1st April 2021 - Leland Sklar who played on the album version , covered this song today. Great song/songwriter.
Love Jackson Browne!! One of my favorites.. Thanks for doing this! Awesome reaction
Fil, glad to see and hear your Passion.......so Take it Easy.....lol
Great analysis Fil!! I saw Jackson live in Melbourne 30 odd years ago and I can honestly say that his hair is even shinier - in person. 😁 I'm not properly trained musically, but I've heard that Jackson really spends quality time crafting his epucs, like The Pretender. Thanks for opening the door and shining some light on how this Master of music - weaves his magic.
Best wishes,
Emily Liberty

One of the greatest songwriters of our time. Underrated guitarist, working with David lindley for so many years built up his chops.
He is one of my favorites! He is so talented...composing his music on both guitar and piano...and such beautiful lyrics.
Phil your analysis makes me go back and really listen deep into the songs. Thank you sir.
Jackson Browne has always been one of my favorites. Love the sound of his voice. So great to listen to him. Thanks for doing this video ❤
Always appreciate the musician's breakdown on music. It comes from detailed point of view.
Due to his expertise Fil can never be called a pretender. This is an awesome song choice. Fil, your analysis helps me to realize why I have always been moved by Jackson's music.
Thanks!
You can see how much you are enjoying this beautiful song.
Fil, I don't discriminate when it comes to music. I love all genres if I feel it . Jackson Browne was my 3rd concert I ever saw. Have all of the his stuff love his two acoustic albums. Thanks feel this Kind of music is in my wheelhouse.🤙
@Brad zybola 🤙
Out into the cool of the evening strolls the pretender.
He knows all his hopes and dreams begin and end there.
I can't believe how passionate and knowledgeable you are after so many videos !!!
It is a true gift to have the ability to sing what ordinary people are experiencing and thinking, Make no mistake, music is a catalog of someone's life experiences and observations. Jackson made them real and relevant. Thanks man...
No homo but you got a great smile watching these.
it really gets you passionate doesn't it. the affinity is contagious!
This song is such an introspective experience!! Jackson Browne could move you with his lyrics. You have explained all of the reasons I love this song. Great job!! You are the best at instruction and explaining technical points, artist history, and how/why we respond to the music like we do. 🎼🎸🤘💖
Yes, this album grabbed hold of me as a kid - fantastic. Love Jackson Browne.
Your channel has one of the best thumbs up vs thumbs down, but there's always those trolls or lil adults that live in their parents basement that get their jollies and kicks giving thumbs down. To them I say walked on dirt and mudholes is in a much higher class than them.
Sorry for the rant Fil and once again I'll say fabulous job with your observation, you're all class and I love your channel! ❤❤❤
Especially when the musician, song and performance was excellent. They have to be trolls because Fil is too genuine not to like. The smile says it all
@Brad zybola It's all good and your response is awesome. You got a couple of lines I could've used in my rant. ROCK ON! 🤘
@Brad zybola I've always believed in having dreams and goals. It gives you direction or purpose in life. With that and some original out of the box thinking the skys the limit as they say.
The Rant sounds original to me and you could start basing your songs off rants like why do I even bother talking to my wife about something I did for her when five minutes later she asks why I didn't do what I just had specifically said I did. Lol (That's just a lil example of what happened to me tonight)
Thanks guys!
Absolutely one of the most devastatingly sad songs; the hopes and dreams of youth giving way to the realities of just trying to make the bills and find whatever love or joy we can along the way. Jackson Browne lyrics always cut right through the soul. Thanks for the insight into songwriting and dynamics!
Just one of the most beautiful songs
Morning Fil, just woken up to this, what a song, what a performance, what a lyric. " I wanna know what became of the changes we waited for love to bring " magical stuff eh? Thanks Fil.
Saw Jackson Brown about four times maybe 10-15 yrs ago. Never let me down. Such a professional. Love his music. And so easy on the eyes....
Love JB. He’s great live in concert. So gifted. Rock Me On The Water would be another good one to analyze. Thanks for another great analysis video-speaking of gifted!
The picture of Jackson Browne seated at the piano in the CD Best Of Jackson Browne was taken by Harold Diltz. The original photograph was shot in my parents living room at my father's grand piano in Sonoma California. Jackson didn't like the size of the shutters. Harold said he could fix it. Harold cropped in the shutters using some photographs of the doors entering the main Gallery and the dining room. He did it with an enlarger and an airbrush. The reason that the window seal down by Jackson left hand is so low is that the house was built in 1838. When the wood floors were installed that bought the floors up resulting in the window seals being lower in the room. If you look at the postcards over Jackson's head in the photograph with a magnifying glass you can see that one of the clouds has a face that looks like Jerry Garcia. It's in black and white but the postcard was in color and it was a rainbow cloud.
I was probably 13 years old.
I used to refer to Jackson as "the guy with two last names."
Such an excellent storyteller in song. And as others have mentioned, an integral part of the Eagles early days songwriting development. Great analysis as per usual
ahhh, this is a total favorite...that I didn't think I could possibly love more, but now, I do. Thank you for the wonderful explanation of the performance! My gosh.
Howdy howdy , I saw where someone critiqued his analysis the other day trying to be positive and Fil responded in a positive way. He definitely kicked it up tonight on the musical aspect. I wonder if that has something to do with it
@@jamesgordonakacrazylegs8222 I remember that comment, but, except for the "Hello! Fil here..." and the "there you have it" part, the videos all seem quite different to me. Discovering that there are commonalities shared by great musicians and bands across so many different eras and genres still amazes me. This particular performance was kind of a peak one, it might have brought out a peak analysis?
@@lynndow3185 brilliantly put, I believe that's exactly what the professor was trying to explain for the guy. You're good have you ever thought about doing this to.
@@jamesgordonakacrazylegs8222 Haha! No way!!
King of the lyrics and he knew how to sing them!
Absolutely love Jackson Browne. He is our California boy! Thanks, Fil for featuring this wonderful song.
Jackson brown what a great singer and song writer.
You should do a video on Van Morrison! Love your content
There is a Jackson Browne song for every stage and emotional place of my life. Starting at age 16 with Doctor My Eyes.
GREAT song, 70's California, We loved this....You are great, glad I found you
Fil, please include a Jackson Browne analysis which has the great David Lindley on slide guitar The Load out/ Stay live for example. You will see a very tight band and excellent playing from them all!!! Great work Fil !!!!
Kev Huby David Lindley is a master
Fil, Listen to the album, "Late For The Sky". Jackson's lyrics and music with David Lindley's brilliant guitar playing is perfection. "For Everyman" is another genius album. Then listen to the songs, "Lives In The Balance" and "Shape Of A Heart". This is some of the greatest songwriting in the last 100 years.
Jackson is one of my favorites. Never seen this performance. Thanks, Fil❣️
I played this album Running on Empty over and over. I went back in the archives of my mind, actually the internet😎and I saw him August 8, 1973 at the Greensboro Coliseum and the other group with him was America. Not sure who took first billing. I was 10 years old and my much older older sister took me in her Jensen Healey with the top down This concert, my very first, was influential to my music interests. Then two years later I saw the Eagles at the same place. Thanks, Fil.
One cannot miss a Jackson Brown tune... forever smooth. All the best from the desert where each day is a dry 110-115.
Jackson Browne is such a great storyteller! His first five albums are classics.
Great song. Great album by the same name. I wouldn't call Jackson a "great" vocalist but he's an absolute genius songwriter. Brilliant wordsmith.
Love this song! Your analysis just enhances it...love your f***ing enthusiasm; deepens my appreciation for Jackson's work.
So glad I found your videos! Wonderful examination on different levels for those of us who love every aspect of music. You could analyze every Jackson Browne song and I’d never be bored. Bravo.
One of my favorite songs; it has so much meaning for me. Great livestream tonight, by the way, Fil!💖
A lot of JB’s songs reveal things in each line. At the end of the song, it’s like the whole picture is revealed.
I love Jackson!! And you are awesome as well!!
Great song , I haven't heard in quite a while. Another amazing interesting analysis. Fabulous!🎵👏🎸🤘
Saw JB live for the first time about three years ago. On stage he selected from about 30 acoustic guitars between numbers. Here’s the thing, he didn’t play one hit or one radio song. All obscure songs. At one point, a girl shouted out “play Lawyers in Love”! ...he laughed..no chance.
Love Jackson Browne. A lot of great musicians from this era, played together (either on tour or in studio, often both).; Great bassist Leland Sklar, drummer Russ Kunkel, Jackson Browne, James Taylor, Warren Zevon, etc. & were changing between each other's bands & would play on each others albums @ times. Some great music came from this era.👍
Brilliant analysis of a brilliant song. Great stuff Fil
One of my favorite songs. The lyrics are so relatable and just a damn good song. Thanks for this (again), Fil.
Fil brings JB's great sounding sound to the world, Jeff in LA USA
Really great analysis, excellent insights.
I was raised on music and Jackson was one guy that made a name for himself with he songs. I never saw Jackson, but a friend of mine did and he played Doctor my eyes and it turned into a 30 minute guitar am that bought down the house. A great guy.
Fascinating, thank you.
Well done Fil.
Love how you don't waste time, just get straight into it. ✌👏👏👏
Ahhhh, Jackson....fell in love with him in the late 70's. He songs were what I was living. Got the chance to meet him (now a few times) years later. Brilliant generous and very kind man. You are so good with this....it is such a pleasure to watch and listen to you. Keep it going....wish you the best.
As always, I learned something, Fil. Thanks. Rock on 🤘 🎸 🥁 🎤💙
Quite a poet ! Many years listening to JB
Thank you for your analysis of Jackson Browne’s compositions and performances. I loved your thoughts and observations.
Another great one. Fountain of Sorrow arguably his greatest work...
Terrific analysis. Spot on.
The Rocking Head, the pure smile.!!! Love ya bro.!
Beautiful Beautiful song. So so Beautifully written. Dang...thats great stuff. Just Love this song. Love The Pretender.
Love this!
Jackson’s songs always have such gorgeous, infectious melodies that almost belie the depth and insight of his lyrics.
Love the way your are so thorough in your comments....I have subscribed!
Thanks!
I have listened to that album a thousand times over the years, one of those I can listen to anytime, love him.
Yeah, I definitely made a solid connection will Jackson's music. His earlier stuff anyway. Saw him perform beautifully at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado back in the mid 80's. Great sound 👍😎🤘
Jeffrey L Ditto in Melbourne mate!!
Just awe inspiring!!
