    That’s a nice handful of good condition boots without barcodes. What a great find!
    They are worth keeping around, and maybe even buying a newer copy for reading.

      Yeah, I have carefully read some of these without breaking the spines but its uncomfortable at times. I have some ebooks/reading copies/library availability for some of these to preserve their pristine condition.

    Glad the book went to someone who will appreciate it. So much great stuff here. The Cover of Mote with the eye is a huge upgrade for sure

    I enjoyed this video, both for what was highlighted in the haul and for what is visible on the shelves behind you!

    I also collected al the Niven books in that style of livery back in the day; I lack only Ringworld and A World Out of Time, both of which I have in hardcover book club editions. I’m not sure about the latter being a part of an Integral Trees trilogy. I think it’s only that book and a sequel called The Smoke Ring, but I can’t be certain. Sweet book haul!

      They are fun to collect and they look nice on the shelf together. I like the cover of Integral Trees, I'm on the lookout for a matching copy of Smoke Ring. Thanks.

    Very nice! I feel your matching set pain. I'll check my Nivens later see if i have any you don't in that Del Ray format. I'm still missing a couple of the Galactic Center books, can't read em yet! Great haul 👏

      I feel the same way, once I have a set then I start thinking about starting them. Its a problem I have with current series, I usually wait until an author has completed a series before I start. But sometimes we get burned and start something that may never get completed, oh well.

    That best of blish is awesome! I haven’t come across that one yet. Great haul! I’ve heard internal trees is good. Protector was kinda middle of the road for me. Very cool cover of the black flame!

    • @sfwordsofwonder
      @sfwordsofwonder  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Something about The Black Flame draws me to it, but looking at the reviews I'm not sure it's that great. I will read it anyways at some point.

    I haven't yet done the research myself, but you have all the same Nivens as me in that style aside from Ringworld, which i have but its falling apart. I'm actually replacing it on Friday with another copy thats a different color but still the same livery. So perhaps I have them all and your just the one short. Okay, now to watch from the start (I saw the thumbnail and HAD to skip ahead to see if you had any i didn't have lol). (Also, thanks for the mention, which i received no notification for strangely, but happened to notice in your description)

    Dang, you ain't playing games with the collecting! I'm not very knowledgeable, but it looks like there's plenty of neat stuff there. I wouldn't have minded having those hardbacks of New Sun that you talked about. I probably should look into the Folio Edition that came out fairly recently.
    Vintage book factoid: I was digging through my older stuff and found a $1.25 mass market paperback of a dense nonfiction title by a Nobel Prize winning chemist. Guess the 70s were a different time!
    I know I'm way behind the curve on this one, but I've finally been talked into reading Children of Time. Hope it lives up to the hype.

    • @sfwordsofwonder
      @sfwordsofwonder  Před 8 měsíci +1

      I think Gene Wolfe is a lot more popular now then when I was collecting back in 2002ish. I'm glad more people are reading his stuff, its great. I read Children of Time but stopped there, I'd probably like to read the trilogy at some point.

    Benford's Galactic center series is pretty good, i read half of it years ago, then lost interest while the other half was on the way in the mail. Always wanted to get back to it. Regarding the third Vinge book, your not kidding about the mass market prices! I settled for a hardcover which i didn't really want. I'd love to find it in mass market paperback someday.
    I also just recently acquired the rest of the Sawyer trilogy, maybe I'll read it when you do so its fresh in my mind when you review it! Nice also to see that you got a copy of Stargate. I don't think I've ever seen anyone else talk about it. In an SF book facebook group I made a post about it years ago and described it as "Beautiful, difficult, tragic yet hopeful". I'm about due for a re-read of it as its never left my mind despite having read it years ago. There's nothing like it.
    I may also have been the one to mention Ventus to you (I'm finding a lot to comment about in this one lol) It's a great story! I've read a few by him. 'Permanence' by him is equally good! I'm incredibly jealous of your 'Best of Stanley Weinbaum'! Mine is in terrible shape but i just started reading it (Part of my massive recent haul). His first published story "A Martian Odyssey' is considered a landmark in the genre and though quite basic by todays standards, i really enjoyed it and the second story which is basically part two. Great haul!

      @sfwordsofwonder  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Maybe we should do some sort of read-a-long thingy for Hominids, that might be fun, at least the first book then go from there.
      Funny you mentioned 'A Martian Odyssey'. I have the ebook for Science Fiction Hall of Fame, ed. by Silverberg. Was checking it out yesterday and it's the first selection in that anthology and I was going to start reading these short stories in between novels.

      Sure! And yeah I've read online that it was included in quite a lot of anthologies over the years.

    First off, I am glad to stumble upon another solid SF booktuber and enjoy your episodes. I read Sawyer's HOMINIDS and had difficulty finishing it for many reasons. I won't spoil it or rail against HOMINIDS, but there were times I wanted to chuck the book across the room.

    • @sfwordsofwonder
      @sfwordsofwonder  Před 8 měsíci

      Welcome. I've had similar experiences with books, although I have a high tolerance and usually plow through things even if I'm not into it. We'll see on Hominids, Matt from SF Reads might read it as well.

    @8020Alive Před 8 měsíci +2

    Hot Take - But! The Gregory Bedford galactic center series can be read out of order imo.
    There's tie-ins and connections to each book and obvious character developments here and there....
    But since each book advances into the future so far - there's a self-contained adventure to be had in each one.
    It had been a few decades since I read the series and I jumped in to " furious gulf" without issue.
    They're not 10 out of 10 novels but they're really fun and can be read quickly.
    Best Regards ✅

      Oh, that is really good to know. I didn't like Benford too much when I was younger but I think he's right up my alley now. Thanks.

    Oh, I love Robert J. Sawyer's Hominid series. It was the first of his I read. I got to meet him in Houston in... 2005 or 6. Nice guy, 7 years younger, he was born the same year my wife was. For a while back in the 1970s I read a lot of Simak but I find if I read most authors' books I get burned out on them. I didn't have the problem with Sawyer, Lackey, McCaffrey, Norton or Walter Farley. Did you know Walter Farley wrote a science fiction book? And he didn't apologize like Louis L'Amour did with Haunted Mesa. The book is The Island Stallion Races. Do I advise you read it? no, but he did it.

    • @sfwordsofwonder
      @sfwordsofwonder  Před 8 měsíci +1

      I think the Hominid series will be good reading, good to hear someone confirm. I didn't know Farley wrote SF. From a goodreads reviewer "Why in the world would we need to bring in science fiction into books like these. Just plain odd." Haha.

    • @ElicBehexan
      @ElicBehexan Před 8 měsíci +1

      @@sfwordsofwonder When I read The Island Stallion Races originally, I didn't really recognize it as the science fantasy it was. I was reading a horse story. However, by 1983 when I read The Black Stallion Legend I recognized that this was another, maybe not as blatant a science fantasy as the other. Farley's works were good horse stories and a nice change from most that were 'western' sort of horse stories. These days there are a lot of horse fantasy stories out there. As much as I love science fiction and fantasy, I really prefer my horse stories to be more 'real.' I can recommend them to other 'horsie girls' like I am (despite now being a little old horsie lady.)

    I listen to books so Earth to the Moon will be next. I find Verne does go into detail, Journey to the Center of the Earth he lists out everything they pack for the climb in detail. In Mysterious Island it's how the Engineer creates everything they need (he better than the Professor on Gilligan Island) I've read he didn't like Wells' books because of the lack of detail, just say you invented a "Time Machine" nothing about how it works etc.
