2. avoiding, giving the run around to questions is a move to run down the clock -- so if someone continues to do so, you will talk over them to reclaim your time and redirect from a pivot
3. it's understandable you wouldn't want to walk directly into a perjury trap but it's pretty alarming the head of the DOJ would have to tip toe around such if things were without flaw
4. as a former prosecutor, if the head of the department of justice / the chief law enforcement officer in the country is giving a senate committee the run around during a hearing -- you would only HOPE a prosecutor would nail them down and control the interaction.

Well it’s crossed examination so it’s considered that the witness is hostile so yes or no questions are fine. The question you stated in your comment was an open-ended question so the witness can tell his story. If you said: “You beat your wife” That is the type of question you would ask.

Her job is to ask specific yes or no questions, not to go into grey areas. If she asks for a follow-up, then he is open to elaborate. This is the process of these hearings. You may believe her to be inconsiderate and it may seem like she’s cutting him off, but she only has a set period of time to ask questions. If he’s allowed to talk endlessly, he can make it so they all only get one question. The person asking is the one in control, not the person who has to swear an oath to not lie when being asked questions.

Think of it this way, does a judge go find out if a killer is actually a killer? Or does the judge rely on the detectives evidence and make a decision based off of that?
