  • I pit my Silky Saw Big Boy against a Hults Bruk camp axe to see once and for all which is faster. It wasn’t even close.

    Now do it right -- undercut with the Silky (the cross grain tool), face cut at 45°with the axe (the slicing tool), back cut with the Silky.

    Just from experience of cutting alot of trees down and using chainsaws, axes, and silky saws the silky saws are really good for softer wood and pruning their larger saws are amazing on pine and similar woods but struggle when cutting through oak, a sharp axe will make quick work of alot of things and I prefer them when felling a tree they are all good to have in order to do different tasks

    Great demo. Axe wins.
    Now for round two, please buck the two trees into useable 10 inch rounds, ready for axe to split into firewood.
    I think we can all appreciate that the answer is not either or, it's both are excellent in partnership.
    Saw for cross cut, axe for splitting.

    I appreciate you making a point of saying that silky saws are good saws. I really like my little gomboy for an easy to carry around folding saw that's very capable for it's size. You are absolutely correct that it's not a replacement for an axe or even a good hatchet. Now I will rarely bring a full size axe camping let alone backpacking, but I pretty much always have a small axe or a good hatchet and a saw of some sort with me (at least a saw blade which can build a frame for just in case). To me the main reason why I bring both is the saw can easily give me precise flush ends to join which saves time if I'm building something. I can carve out nearly anything with my hatchet, but for flush cuts of anything with some girth, it's not suited

  • @tedsemonis7905

    If you are good with an axe, you do it more than a few times a year, speed goes to the axe. But as you swung it I could see a few head spins, which is normal. My point is which is safer, axe is flying by and can bounce or miss and come back at you when tired. A saw is a safer option if you are tired or frustrated. It is not speed as safety may be. Paul Bunyan was big for a reason.

  • @kloc072386
    @kloc072386 Před 2 lety +3

    It's a good video, I think the saw is lighter and easier to carry for long distance. The axe is great in a more sedimentary environment. If I was on a long camping trip with lots of hiking I'm probably taking the saw. If I'm chopping down trees for firewood relatively close to the house the axe would be clutch.

    I think the real advantage of the saw is it takes much less skill to use properly. Using an axe PROPERLY takes some skill. That retroactive law might not stand a Constitutional challenge in Federal Court due to its retroactive nature. Retroactivity is something that is usually not held Constitutional. It is not like he can go back through 4 years of past sales and get the customers to give him the retroactive taxes, and truthfully THEY are the ones that normally pay taxes.

    Guys who think a saw is always faster than an axe are guys who need to loosen their man buns and lay of the soy milk. The answer (as always) is "it depends" on the application. Sometimes axes are faster, sometimes, saws are faster. Chainsaws are always faster than either of them. As one "bushcraft tweaker" to another, well done.

    Great vid on the subject. I'd love to know which uses more exertion to do and how far you can hear both being done? People have to realize that the sound of an axe hit might mean the difference of having (pirates) who are actively hunting and listening for those sounds, sights, and smells of others to take advantage of coming your way. Anyway, I'd use the saw because of my health issues over the axe. Great vids on your channel and I'm always interested in your take on thing. Take Care and Stay Safe.
