Great description of the diesel motor and how it works . Just a little too simple for the average home owner . You are very skilled at mechanical work. Thanks
Thanks Paul, it's worth trying, you never know unless you try.
Thank You for this awesome and simple six minutes video. Was seeking some info about removing Kubota injection pump and now I found it. Thanks! :)
Thanks my friend
Your a good diesel mechanic I can tell. Nice work this was very interesting. I have a D902 on my Kubota BX I love watching videos like this thanks.
Thanks my friend
I ended up swapping my injector pump for a known good pump and now the engine runs great. I went on to completely dismantle the original pump, and lapped the mating surfaces with diamond lapping compound. That pump works now too. Thanks for the encouragement.
That's a great idea. These engines are very simple and easy to work on.
may i ask why you decide to change your pump?
@@ryy597 I had two engines (in light towers). One ran great, the other one barely ran and smoked alot. I swapped fuel pumps, no difference. Swapped filters, fuel and air, no difference, finally, I swapped the injector pumps and the problem moved from one engine to the other.
@@paulcalif so if it runs good than i shouldn't mess with it?
Thanks Pete, awesome info!
Wow great quality of video and interesting info, right to the point with a smooth delivery. Thanks bud
Much appreciated!
This is exactly what my Kubota k008 is doing we going to give this a try thanks for the great video
Glad to help
Thanks Pete. Nice Job. I had a similar issue with my L3940 Tractor.
Thanks Mark
Damm starts right up good job sir
At least I hope they do
Happy New Year Pete the amazing engine man. Thanks for the video

Thanks a bunch I have a yanmar ex3200 that happened to me a couple days ago. now I fix it. Thank you Pete
Awesome, good luck
Fantastic Pete, Thanks

Great job thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Sir, you do a great video. Clean style and easily understood. 5***** from this new subscriber!
Thank you my friend
I had to replace the injection pump on my bobcat 463. Same engine as here. A rebuilt pump cost about $350. Bobcat wanted over $3,000 to do the job. Took me about 2 hours
Awesome!
Thanks for sharing
Thanks Ray
Nice video. Wish I found this prior to diving into my pump. Similar kubota 3 cylinder in a jacobson turfcat. Hadn't ran in 10+ years, water in the fuel. I pulled the injector pump out. I was difficult to get out because the throttle slider was frozen and it ended up breaking on the gears that rotates the plunger inside. (slightly older design to yours). Called kubota, they tell me that dont sell parts for the pump but they would end up sending it to a diesel shop like D&W. These guys were great. Similar problem with finding parts, I send in some pictures of the pump and have the parts the next day. Got the thing running after a bit of time. Wish there were some videos of pump assembly, trade secrets i believe. Hi from Alden
Yeah, diesel engines are always a huge secret. Big money in fixing them
Marvelous job on this and very enlightening. subbed -PawPaw

Thank you and welcome Dusty
Awesome sleuthing Pete. Not a bad price for a new fuel pump I've seen rebuilt ones go for over 1500.
he didn't rebuild the whole pump, just part of it.
I did not rebuild the pump at all, I bought a new one.
It's amazing what they go for
Great info 👍🏻
Thanks Brad
Interesting, diesels are mostly a mystery but this looked easy. Thanks Pete.
It was easier than I thought. They are not that difficult
Mechanical diesel engines are one of the simplest engine types that exist.
Thank you!
Welcome!
Interesting video Pete. I've acquired an engine in the same range to rebuild in part for entertainment and also to do an engine rebuild video for my channel (and have found the workshop manuals online).
Just a point of note that the D902 is one out of a series of similar engines, including the one I bought (a D662), D722 and the D902. They seem to also use the same pumps on engines like the Perkins K103-07 3 cylinder diesel (Which I've also bought). Presumably the same issue would apply to those and indeed all similar diesels.
Lots of parts are common and similar. I had to use a part number that was not exactly the same.
I have a F2880 mower with the D1105 diesel and it has started the blueish smoke and low power. Thought it might be injectors but this seams more accurate. I am no way a mechanic, so your video here has helped me.
Glad it helped
@@PetesGarage was there an option to replace the spring in the pump or do you have to replace the whole pump?
You can change the springs, but I could not get the part number and he needed the mower for his business
thanks so much, that was the exact problem with my old KX41 excavator
Thanks Rick
Haha i love the mini blue cobra in the back!!!!
That's a Cobra trainer
Excellent. Got a 902 in my kubota. Runs great, no smoke.

Good to know. You got right to the problem. I have that engine.
It was a good one to find
thank you,, great stufffffff

You bet!
u should always do a compression and leak down test before tearing into the engine
I always do. Since I found the broken spring in the pump I took the head off to take a quick look inside, it was a 30 minute job.
@@PetesGarage What should my compression pressure be?. What should my leak down be?

thank you I have a D1105-e but I think this would help bc they are very similar engines and the injection pumps look and operate very similarly so thank you
There are very similar
Your video is wonderful. I found it by accident and it was very well done. I have a Kubota RTV and I have questions about the hydrostatic transmission if you work on them I would love to see a video on it.
Thanks Earl....I have not worked on them yet.
Good job

The injection timing is set by adding or subtracting the shims under the injection pump. This Kubota has fixed timing like most lawnmower gas engines. A lot of automotive diesel injection pumps have variable injection timing. I installed a Kubota 905 diesel in a Geo Metro and it had driveability issues because of the fixed injection timing.
Interesting, I can see how that would work.
I was thinking about doing the same, 3cyl kubota in a geo , did you ever get it right? How is the power? Could a turbo be added? Milage? Thanks would appreciate some info, did you build a adapter?
@@redfuel6bt Power...terrible. Going from 54 hp to 24 hp makes it a flat land vehicle only. I forgot about the car long ago but still have it. It's not a simple swap at all. Nothing fits. I built the adapter, modified a Suzuki Swift flywheel, clutch, starter, and had to make a vacuum pump to work the brakes. The oil pan hangs low and needs mods to provide clearance. The worst part is that the oil filter is exactly in the way of the right axle. A complex adapter needed to be made to switch it over to the front side of the engine. The fixed timing injection pump makes driveability poor. The governor had to be modified to hit 3600 rpm from fixed 1800. When you were ready to shift and hit 3600, the power cut back completely. But it got around 70mpg during the week I tested it. The registration expired and California would not renew it without the original engine. I have a turbo but it still sits on a shelf. I used to build random things like that but nearing age 70, no longer have the interest. I build solar generators for fun now.
@@redfuel6bt Here it is....built 14 years ago! czcams.com/video/hnAOF1bOSB8/video.html
Here's another random video from 2016 when someone bet me it wouldn't start. czcams.com/video/BhBKLahX6_0/video.html
@@redfuel6bt Since you clearly like Cummins and off road.... here's my boat after converting it from a slow inboard to a stern drive with Chevy 6.5 turbo diesel. I still have the boat in storage and doubt that I'll ever run it again. Boats were fun for years but I'm over it. Note the air horn dongle. It once hung from a friend's Dodge Cummins before he rolled it 3 or 4 times. The old Perkins 47 horsepower diesel that came out of the boat went into her old wooden 28 foot Tollycraft cabin cruiser...very slow, 8mph, but got us around the NorCal Delta at 1.25 gallons per hour. That's cheap boating.

I have a 2012 kubota d902 wich blows white smoke on startup after it warms up it goes away brand new injectors and glow plugs
Slight fuel obstruction
Good job👍👍👍👍😷👏🏻
Thanks! 😃
Very down to earth explanation..pete..👍
Thanks 👍
I had a power loss problem I found number 3 cylinder (that's the cylinder if your standing in front of the engine looking toward the rear of the engine), was dead, and also had a loud clatter noise in the rear of the engine. I pulled the injector out of number 3 cylinder and done a compression test which resulted in a real low compression reading. Just for the fun of it I took a piece of bailing wire about a foot long and lowered it into the cylinder until it touched the top of the piston then I reached around to the front of the engine and grabbed the pulley and turned the pulley back and forth and found I had to turn the pulley as much as two inches in either direction to get any response out of the piston. Immediately I knew where the clattering was coming from and the cause of the misfire and low compression. So I pulled the oil pan off and found the rod bearing had spun and the rod itself was bent in the number 3 cylinder. So at this time I'm in the middle of rebuilding it. Just wanted to share my story on how I diagnosed my engine problems.
That's really cool, sorry it will be so much work.
@@PetesGarage Thank you I enjoyed your video on the fuel pump problem!
Very nice that you put this out.
Should the radiator be shaking like that?
No, it should not, it needs new mounting bushings. I told the owner
Hi Pete. Thanks for the video. I was chasing the source of a broken pin I found in the oil pan when I pulled the pump. I also found a dangling spring there by the shuttle. One end of it is longer than the other. I cant figure out where it attaches to and from. Did you have any springs to attach when you reinstalled the fuel pump? I have an electrical external shutoff not the one attached to the timing cover. Thanks.
It depends an the pump model. Try looking it up from the stamping on the pump
I would recommend always adjusting the valve lash if you have removed the head or rocker assembly even if you keep the push rods in the same locations, it never a good idea to assume the valve lash is correct.
Excellent point, thank you for the comment
all so ck fuel pump timing that is what the shims are for on fuel pump base
Nice
Thanks
@@PetesGarage please subscribe my Channel sir.

Great video Pete, Just purchased a Kubota X 1140 Diesel and was curios if its normal that it moderately smells like too much diesel coming from the exhaust? It also blows a little smoke when I initially start it up. I have a Kubota SVL 75 and does not smell as much burning diesel as the RTV. Possibly the Kubota SVL 75 may have more emission control components than the RTV?
It could be, until it breaks in some
Great video Pete! Did you replace the gasket/shim on the injector pump or just re-use the existing one? I'm rebuilding a D722 but the injector pump gasket/shim does not seem to come with any of the rebuild kits out there.
I reused them. Worked fine
@@PetesGarage Great! Thanks Pete!
the "gaskets" are shims used to set the injection pump timing. put the same thickness in that came out or do the pump timing procedure
@@richardcranium5839 Correct
Wow you are amazing go to kubota on facebook. guys always have lots of questions .Thanks for that.
Thank you
They make different shims for timing. Did you check that when you installed the new pump ?
Yes
Great job!! Do I need to re time the pump after reinstalling? Because I'm working on one after some one tried working on it and I'm not seeing a timing mark.
Yes you do
@@PetesGarage what the correct procedure to time the injection pump?
If you did not change anything it should just line up with the shuttle
@@PetesGarage thank you for your knowledge
Did you have to bleed the pump and injectors before starting?
Yes, not much through
Thanks for sharing Pet do you have a video how you take off the head
I do not, but it's pretty simple
I have the D905 (similar) in a Vermeer S600TX mini skid steer - manual says oil change with filter is 5.1L. dipstick shows waaaayyyy over full. removed about 1.5l and its just above the full mark - is the shallow oil pan common on these? Pretty sure that mine has a shallow oil pan and Vermeer forgot to change it in their manuals. any damage likely from being run overfull? it ran a long time as previous oil change shows it had way too much in it as well.
If it didn't cause a leak there is no damage.
Love video.question?was it making motor overheat before you did the work?
It should not make it over heat
I am curious, couldn't you have just replaced the spring? or all 3 springs with new ones? Excellent video, I appreciate the work you put in here.
Yes, if I had the part number I could have. Thank you
For the wear and price, I would order three new springs. There is very little wear otherwise, cam lobes were good.
So why was it you didn't just replace the spring and re-install?
Nobody would give me the part number, but I've since found it.
@@PetesGarage where did you find them
@@justinlafon1953 just for anyone wandering along after, you can buy the pump rebuild kits on ebay now, search for "Overhaul repair kit for 3 cylinder NP-PFR3KD50, NP-PFR3KD55, NP-PFR3KX55 " - I just bought one ready to sort my D1105 out for the same issue.
For ref the pumps / heads are shimmed for engagement...we used to produce these under licence as a Perkins compact engine and the engagement depth varied from engine to engine...you got luck here but could have easy over fuelled
Interesting, thanks
i have an f2000 with a d950 motor. i recently had similar issues with smoke and diminished power. just to see what would happen i added sea foam and hoped it was a stuck injector. 15 mins later it returned to normal power with no smoke. i got lucky but more times than not start with the simple things first. nice video thx.
Hay Pete I have a Bx 2350 and on my number one injector line I cracked it loose to see if I was getting fuel so I tiended it back and now it won't stop leaking it drips
You'll have to loosen and reseat the fuel line in the injector
Hi Pete, why didn't you just replace the springs and or new injector instead of purchasing a new pump?
Diesel engines are considered industrial. I would have rebuilt the pump, but the part numbers are not made available and parts are impossible to find without being a distributor. It's kind of a huge money racket.
Gotcha
Also the separate pumps have to be calibrated so that they pump the same amount of fuel per stroke, and without a service manual for the PUMP it is very difficult to get it right. Best to have it overhauled by a shop that specializes in fuel pumps, or do as Pete did and just buy a new one.
I had this same issue with my pump. I took the pump to my local tractor supply. they swapped it from a rebuild they had on the shelf. $125 bucks after core. I was out the door 15 min, back to mowing in about an hour.
Petes Garage i wouldnt have trusted just replacing the 1 broken spring either, highly possible and probable that the other two springs would go bad too, so i agree you made the right desicion in putting a whole new pump on
Bonjour, merci pour l'astuce 😉

Great video.. Ive got a 12 valve, but unsure if I want a kubota diesel. How many hours were on this engine and do you think its a good choice for a residential yard engine?
i would say more than a thousand. It is a great choice
Take a temp gun run the engine and check which exhaust port on the manifold is cooler before removing head
Good idea
Pete, thx for the video..when I reinstall the pump it doesn't sit flush,, seems to be hovering and I have to push down to rescrew the Allen bolts. Is this normal?
Make sure the shuttle is lined up with the spool
Hi, thanks for detailed video. I had a problem in my gen, when I started it go to full acceleration and I had to cut the fuel for turn off. Could be the rack governor loose in any way and stuck in high RPM? Any advice? Thanks. Is a Cummins onan 7500 with kubota 3 cylinder engine
A loose governor will do it
Hi, I have a question. I recently cracked my head and had it replaced along with the injectors. But it still blows smoke on first crank and under load???
Check the fuel supply
Pete I have the Kubota D722 it overheated it’s in a lawnmower and it seems to be losing radiator fluid through the exhaust but you can’t see it. It’s just a black sooty smoke. Should I order a gasket and do what you did pull the injector thing and how do I find out what torque to set the head bolts back at?
Hopefully the block or head is not cracked.
Hi Mr. Mechanic: I have a kubota BX2370with a small three cylinder diesel. I have changed the filter -fuel pump and it still bogs down under a small load. Is there any advice that you may have??
Change the fuel in case there is water in it, and look in the gas tank for an obstruction blocking the fuel line.
Good chance your fuel jelled, you can go to a auto parts store and buy a can of fluid that immediately breaks this up. Costs about $30 not cheap but better than taking the tank off, also change your fuel filters. Kubota users two of them
Hello Pete. I have a 2015 Kubota L3901, 4x4, with loader. It has approximately 600 hours on it. I have gone beyond the factory guidelines for oil, transmission, hydrolic and filter systems changes. A little blue smoke started blowing around 450 hours
3 Kubota Dealers looked it over and felt this was normal and gave me several pieces of advice. New oil, new air filter, etc, etc. For the most part, the blue smoke has disappeared. My real question is, can I safely remove the PDF system from the tractor to gain more power?? Its out of warranty now too. Or is this a fools errand to cause more potential damage.?? Thanks for your advice and support. Great channel.
I'm not a huge fan of removing systems because it will affect something else
By removing the DPF filter you will have to remove the fuel injector for the said DPF ( they work by collecting soot and when the engine is at working temperature and load it will begin a cleaning cycle, which is burning the soit and turning it into ash in the filter, ) so if you remove the DPF without any other modifications, the engine will still try to burn the soot and thus causing exhaust overheat. And poor fuel consumption because you know. It can’t reach the temperature ( sensor removed and other stuff ) so engine will turn into safety mode. Throw you codes and won’t be able to perform.
That said. If you have a diesel shop who knows what they are doing, and willing to take responsibility if something goes bad.
You'd have to do the valve adjustment anyway, the head gasket wouldn't necessarily be exactly the same height and will affect the distance from the camshaft to the rockers
That's true
Pete, I have a B8200 and my pushrods bent and took the front end apart to find the cam, indler, and crank gears are chipped. What would cause this to happen. Thanks, John
Backfire or fuel vapor lock
I was watching your video and thanks for doing it. My G4200 started with a leak on the manifold for the injection pump. I replaced the gasket but still had the same leak plus picked up a leak on one of the injectors. I replaced the two "O" rings on the injector and installed another gasket. I still have the leak, it loks like it might be oil with gas coming out. The motor tries to start a little but never does run plus the leak comes out at the gasket. Is there a chance that I am pressurizing the motor due to an injection pump leak and forcing the oil-gas out?
Hopefully you will have the time to assist me.
If an injector is leaking it will pressurize the cylinder and prevent it from starting
Thanks, Pete!
How about some VW 1.9/2.0 TDI Diesel work? I'm considering converting the old '99 Ford Ranger to that setup.
OM616 or 617, much better engines.
I've looked at those Mercedes engines plenty. There is nowhere even close to the aftermarket that there is for VW TDIs. Plus, in my engine compartment, that means lots of cutting and welding and custom fabbing.
I do the work as I get 'em. If I get one, sure I'll do it
There is a large variety of VW 1.9 and 2.0 TDI engines, which one are you looking for?
Many people prefer the ALH code engine.
planeflyer21 a kubota V2203 engine with a turbo does well as well in a small truck
Pete: Thank you so VERY MUCH. I have a grey market YANMAR tractor. Model 2820.
I have searched high & low for exactly the info you provided in this video.
I have learned so much about the care and feeding of the small 2-3 cylinder diesel engines while attempting to get my YANMAR running properly.
Your video may be the final piece in the puzzle. Again a HUGE THANK YOU, for the info regarding the removal and breakdown of the fuel injection pump.
I have removed and cleaned the injectors, bleed the fuel system, run some "Dextron ATF" through the system, and still had one cylinder when running the engine would just push BLACK SMOKE out the stack.
Now I need to find a source for the large spring you show in the video that sits inside the plunger.
Hopefully I can find this spring so I don't have to buy a new pump.
Any info regarding where these springs might be sourced would be GREATLY APPRECIATED.
Happy to help Bob, there are some diesel supply and parts places online that sell the springs
Just out of curiosity why replacing the entire pump instead of just the broken spring?
I could not find the spring part number and he needed the machine quickly
Hola, tengo un kubota que le cuesta arrancar en frio. Puede que sea la bomba de combustible? Tiene buena compresión y los calentadores andan bien.

I have a similar issue with my mahindra 2015HST. I’ve replaced the injectors without improvements. Next is the solenoid fuel pump, which I’m going today. I will also clean the fuel tank when I do that. If it doesn’t change anything though, I will break into the injection pump and change the head gasket while I’m at it.
My only fear is valve clearance. I know nothing about it and I’m worried about screwing it up when I reassemble it. Do you have any advice here?
If you don't rotate the engine with the head off you have nothing to worry about
So ended up taking it to a shop. There is at least one bad cylinder and they’re gonna tear it down. Hopefully it’s just one set of rings.
Good luck my friend
Hi Pete! So you can't just replace the broken spring?
You can, but they were not available quickly and the guy needed the machine for his business
I have a N.H. tractor that when replacing a fuel filter i had trouble with it being airlocked. finally got it running but when i engage the blades tractor blows black smoke and bogs down. what should i check next? Thanks
Blockage in the fuel tank
Where did you find the torque specs for the bolts and injectors?
I think I found them online
I know this video is 3 years old but here goes. I removed the injection pump and everything looked fine. I reinstalled, but I'm not sure if i lined up the pin into the shuttle. I had the injectors tested and 2 were bad and 1 barley working. So i changed them out and started it up. The engine is now making a clicking noise i didn't hear before, and smoking more than before. Could i just take the injection pump off and try to reset, or will the timing be off now?
You have to check the lifters on the pump
How likely is it a 3 cylinder kubota head qill be cracked ? Thanks jeff
No likely unless it really overheated
Hello, I have a kubota D902-6E3198 carpet cleaning engine and I am getting a lot of black smoke and the power of the engine drops when I accelerate it and we putit to work, what do you recomend I do?
That's a tough one. Could be anything from water in the fuel to a stuck valve
Most small block Kubota engines are the same, have 2 of them. My question is why didn’t you just replace the spring or just the single injector?
I could not find the right part number at the time. I have found it since.
@@PetesGarage - Any chance you still have that part number? I haven't pulled my pump yet to confirm it, but my bx2200 is smoking and down on power as of today, I just replaced my 3rd hydraulic hose in a week and now it's not running right.
I have a kubota mini dumper kc70 with single cylinder diesel air cooled and it's having the exact same symptoms. Any suggestions.
Check the same things first
Great video. If there is a black smoke instead of blue, what could the problem be ? Could it be the fuel injectors ?
Black smoke is fuel so the injectors are a good place to start
@@PetesGarage Thanks for your response. But its not constant, it happens when I first start the engine and then when I give more throttle.
I am getting a problem my D600 keep giving blueish white smoke but engine runs fairly good other than that
On a Kubota diesel -3 cylinder motor-I was told a new head gasket was put on recently. HOwever, when I put water in the radiator, oil came out the top of the motor-from the oil fill plug. Can you tell me what is wrong and how to fix it? Please and thank you so much. Dave

Check the fuel supply first. Try running it right out of a separate can of fuel to eliminate the entire fuel supply system.
What process did you do for bleeding the fuel after putting it back together?
Crack the fuel lines
Did you have to replace the entire pump? Or could you replace just the spring?
You can replace just the springs

Do we need to bleed the engine after installing a injector pump?
Yes

It's pretty simple to replace. I have another one to do so maybe I'll make a video
FYI, there is supposed to be an o-ring that goes over the alignment pin/oil feed tube in the front corner.
