    I like GPD because they are making devices other companies don't care about. They serve a purpose in the market and challenge the limitations of technology. I just hope they will continue to do so and don't get too greedy.
    I just backed the project to support them. I have the pocket 1 but I can use more performance and a better keyboard.

      Not to mention they keep updating the products. All of the other big guys take 2 years to "update" their machines with the exact same specs and some more RGB for 600 more dollars than the last model.

    I would love to see reviews of micro PC which shows much you can do with the different ports. How many devices can it power? What sort of hubs can it support? How many screens through the USB-C, and can you run other devices through the C when doing so? That sort of stuff. Even if it is a theoretical run down, that would still be nice to see it explained.

    • @ThePhawx
      @ThePhawx  Před 6 lety +2

      Most of this stuff was already on the list. But I'll add the "how many USB devices can it support with power" to the list

    Man you are the best reviewer for these devices out there...
    The Pocket 1 let me down in several areas... Battery life (2-3 hours) and standy, performance (atom + emmc), fan noise and heat (even if there is an app to stop it (but then it's even slower and hotter), including overcharging, keyboard, poor wifi range (had to use a usb wifi card, which kills the only USB port...)
    This one is improved but still a few deal breakers... No SSD, no display out while using the charger...
    Still, I wonder if and how is battery life improved, and especially stand-by draining,. Waiting for your full review...
    Also, can you do benchmarks with the fan switched off (geekbench or even cinebench)? I would mainly use it without the fan, as I can't stand fan noise.
    Thanks a lot!

    • @Nodus
      @Nodus Před 6 lety +2

      Not to argue, but if you get a usb c hub *with hdmi or display port* that supports usb c pd (pd for power delivery) you can charge and have a external monitor. You can even do so with the pocket 1. ( *EDIT* )

    • @ksp1278
      @ksp1278 Před 6 lety +2

      It may be your power supply that's at fault. I am in UK and the supplied charger could only supply 2.5A rather than 3.0A that the original US charger has. With the 2.5A charger I had all sorts of problems with USB devices. I bought an aftermarket charger and it is much better (although still some USB devices intermittently fail to be detected).

    • @_Digitalguy
      @_Digitalguy Před 6 lety

      My hub has as PD and 65W. My original charger has not 3A but it does PD at 24W when the device is on, which should be more than enough. Never had a charging issue, the issue is display out that seems disabled over USB C

  • @fnordpol

    You do realize that the pocket 2 has almost twice as much battery capacity than the pocket 1 and therfore runs longer not "a tiny bit less" (3:55)? (note Capacity is measured in Wh=V*Ah ;-)

  • @josecarranzah
    @josecarranzah Před 6 lety +10

    If you have a Win2, is there really a "need" for this? Other than the better keyboard I think I can squeeze far better performance with the Win2. Also, the Win2 can drive 2 monitors thanks to its micro HDMI and usb-C, that might've been a miss here.

    • @ThePhawx
      @ThePhawx  Před 6 lety +5

      jose carranza If you have the Win2, no you really don't need this device.

    • @televisionandcheese
      @televisionandcheese Před 6 lety +7

      jose carranza Well no, but that's the thing.
      This is aimed at a completely different market, it's for people who use UMPCs and it's not likely for them to have the Win series of GPD.

    • @AnTran147
      @AnTran147 Před 6 lety +12

      There's a reason why GPD are running two UMPC product lines at the same time. The Win line is for people who want portable PC gaming on the go, but also want or need the usual PC amenities like a keyboard and mouse pointer for doing other stuff (or for MMO gaming). The Pocket line is strictly for people who need a tiny device with a somewhat touch-typable keyboard and aren't meant for gaming at all (though that won't stop some people from gaming on it from time to time anyway lol). It's more of a work device than the Win line or even a media consumption device on account of its bigger and higher resolution screen.

    • @0xKruzr
      @0xKruzr Před 6 lety +1

      It really depends on what you're trying to do. You cannot squeeze far better performance with the Win 2; the CPU and GPU in this machine are almost three times faster. ETA: huh; apparently there's been a hardware update on the Win 2 since the last time I looked and now the Pocket 2 has the same hardware. So if you have the latest Win 2, it should be exactly the same.

    These are both interesting little devices but they are way too expensive for what they are. The GPD Pocket 2 is still £450 two years later. I could get a decent small Chromebook with better specs in every respect for two thirds of that and all the recent ones run Linux as well as Chrome OS and run Android apps as well so are very flexible.

      Kinda redundant given the USB-C port already allows for display-output and an MST-hub will let you get more than one connection out of it too. Plus, this now gives them room for a second USB-A port.

      Shadi Al-Ahmadi I never really understood the point of the pocket. OK it's a pocket pc, maybe to work. But the keyboard is not good for working, the screen is small (I would never develop code on that, with that keyboard), and it's more expensive! At least the first was compared to the gpd win 1. I think the win 2 is better overall, as I don't see real usage for the pocket.

    Hey the phawx big fan here, do you think this sagement of devices is going to grow up specially gpd win 2 etcetera, I am considering one but maulybe next gen I have been eying the switch for long but building a whole new library of games is not cheap.
    And what about arm processors do they have a future in emulating steam games

    • @ThePhawx
      @ThePhawx  Před 6 lety +1

      khaled Al Rashidi GPD seem to be very interested in targeting the UMPC space and I think it's a safe bet to see a Win3. I don't see ARM for Windows happening until 2020 with regard to performance.

    • @AnTran147
      @AnTran147 Před 6 lety +2

      Phawx could give a better answer, but my input is that you should honestly really only consider a Swiitch if you're really into Nintendo's games. If you really only want a Swiitch to play multiplatform games on the go, even the Win 2 will almost always give you a better experience (only exceptions are terrible ports like Atelier Lydie and Suelle) and it'd be more portable as well.
      In terms of growth of "this segment of devices", if we're talking specifically about devices like the Win and Win 2 that have gaming controls and have keyboard, there's really one device coming that's similar. That would be the Dragonbox Pyra, but considering it's running off a really old ARM chip, it's not a true competitor to the Win line and really just belongs in its own tiny niche. If we're just talking about Windows gaming devices in general....still no. There's several potential "competitors" floating around, but none of them are anywhere close to be ready and two of them (PGS and Smach Z) are basically just scams.
      As for ARM..............maybe in 2-3 years. ARM CPUs just aren't fast enough to effectively emulate our modern complex games. Preferably devs would begin porting their games to ARM architecture, but we all know that ain't gonna happen. Honestly, the only way I can see Windows 10 on ARM gaming could ever begin to be somewhat viable is if NVIDIA starts making mobile versions of their Tegra SoCs again. My dream is for NVIDIA to make a new Shield Portable with whatever their newest Tegra is, and can dual boot Windows 10 ARM and Android. And of course, it should have a keyboard as well.

      Arthran this reply makes me take a bow to you sir.
      You are absolutely right I never owned nintendo console except game boy advance 25 years ago to play pokemon.
      Console games are very expensive and we rarely see good prices on them to be honest.
      Playing skyrim on switch to continue on my laptop is priceless in my opinion don't forget steam share I have like 500 games already on my steam share and personally spent over 3000 usd on my library so far.
      Buying the game twice and progressing differently is not worth it

    Quick recap: GPD Pocket 1 sucked badly in productivity due to productivity being directly related to the quality of the input devices.
    GPD Pocket 2 decided to suck even more, by removing trackpoint and further destroying it's keyboard layout.
    I got GPD WIN 2 instead. I don't play games, bought it for work.
    This is how incredibly bad Pocket 1/2 is for it's intended use.
    While WIN significantly improved in second revision, Pocket definitely took a step back.
    No one cares what sort of performance is inside, if the bottleneck in the input/output department.
