How To Start A School (Private/Charters/Religious) pt. 1 | TEACHERpreneur

  • 6 years ago, as a special education teacher, I started my own school. Now I am sharing what I know to help other courageous teachers do the same. In how to a school part I, I answer the following questions:
    1. How long did it take and what was the initial cost?
    2. What legal things did you have to do?
    3. What is required to own/open an accredited school?
    4. How did you find your pupils?
    In this series, I share a little about my journey of starting a school and why it is important. So many teachers in general and special education teachers particularly are burnt out but love teaching. Our kids are not always treated fairly nor are most of them learning to their potential. I no longer wanted to be a part of a system that fails so many.
    Make sure you watch all the videos in this series: shorturl.at/gxzPU
    1st How I started my own school (Great Inspiration)
    2nd Difference between a private/charter/religious school
    3rd Accreditation

    P.S. I do keep a log of video ideas and suggestions, so more videos down the pipe. Thank you so much the support, feedback, recommendations, comments, and encouragement!

    Um, the process is just like home childcare when applying to DCF. Who did you apply to for the school?

    • @CindyTheLDCoach
      @CindyTheLDCoach  Pƙed 4 lety +10

      For accreditation?...Georgia Accrediting Association. It’s a process, but it’s doable. Especially in FL, I feel they are friendly like Ga with laws that give state funds. I’ll be taking more about that soon.

    • @Glam6
      @Glam6 Pƙed 4 lety

      Cindy Lumpkin not for the accreditation but to open a school. Who/where did you have to apply to open the school?

    • @CindyTheLDCoach
      @CindyTheLDCoach  Pƙed 4 lety +21

      Brithney Gardiner Literally, it’s a business. You don’t have to ask anyone if you can have a school. It’s your decision to start one. Once you register with the state your business, which is a school then you have yourself a school. Some states may have zoning issues you would have to adhere to. Now you don’t want to stop there. You have to apply to an accrediting body to get accredited. Now they are the ones who have ALL the requirements that need to be done and in order to get state funds you have to be accredited, at least in Georgia. Anyone at any time can open a school. Now the issue is the accrediting and or meeting whatever the requirements are to get state funding if your state gives special-needs scholarships. Hope that makes since. At the end of all this, I might do a live for questions l’ve left unclear.

      Same im also 16 and I plan on getting pretty wealthy on real estate. And through the money on that, I can start my own public school. Not private, And preferably high school. And give the students a nice experience. Not terrible super processed foods, Or control freek teachers. But fun field trips, And useful information. I'm really happy there's another person my age thinking of this. đŸ„ł

 We did this many years ago with children that were in trouble instead of sending them to TOC or somewhere where they would just sit in a chair
 We asked the principal to send them to drama
 And we worked out the problem without them even knowing it
 Some of the students went on to be great actors also
 But the main thing is they learned lessons
 They learn life lessons.

Teachers are not required to have a bachelors; however, unless they teach something like an elective...music, wood shop, auto mechanics I most likely wouldn't hire them as a teacher, I would make them a co-teacher, someone working under the leadership of a teacher who is certified or has a great deal of experience. This is only the case because of who our clients are too. Our parents want to know that the teachers have to skills needed to teach our population. Thanks for your comment!!

    This was great! Thank you so much for sharing this info and your journey. I am a 7-year teaching vet and starting to really feel the burnout of teaching virtually. I am in the planning stages of a non-profit organization program for the arts and education that would meet face-to-face. I’m wondering how much of a challenge this would be during the pandemic. Have you faced any issues with your school due to Covid-19? What would be your advice on ways to navigate during these times?

    That is incredible, WOW $75. Codee aka CoCo has that much right now :) Not that she is in any position to become a teacher right now, She is just 14, but being a special ed teacher is on her list of things she might want to do when she grows up. And to think She could have her own school someday. Thanks for sharing it is good to know there are so many possibilities. It is so true that not all kids learn the same. I feel like Codee really struggles with concentration, and staying focused. we were told in 6th grade she had ADD, and they gave us medication, but after praying hard about it we just kept getting the same NO, do not medicate her. I believe it was the right choice, however she struggles with focusing, and completing assignment, and then remembering to turn them in. I think this will actually help her as she gets older, if she does choose to open a school, or even just be in a career working with kids, because she will be more understanding of those situations, and that not all kids learn the same. Thanks So much for sharing.

    Praying for you to continue the Lords work and steward these children well.
    My wife and I have a Autistic child and the public school system in our area just does not have the tools/teachers capable of caring for him. Therefore, we are praying to see if this is a path for our family and it’s coming from the Lord.
    Please pray for us, we are waiting for the Lord to confirm what he put on our hearts.

    Hello, so in order to want to build and run your own private school as in being in the building during school days and make sure things are running smoothing or just having the title as principal, assistant principal, you need a masters degree ?

    • @CindyTheLDCoach
      @CindyTheLDCoach  Pƙed 2 lety

      The person over the instructional program generally needs a Masters degree. I put the word generally because things do change from state to state. In addition, if you do not seek accreditation then in most places there is very little requirements. So you could run a school without this if you don’t get accredited. We have a group on Facebook called teachers interested in starting a school you are welcome to join and ask questions as needed and share your journey.
