Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

have to look into her earlier band Revamp for more .
BTW this was in Wacken,Germany, with 82,000 fans in the audience.

Classical, rock, metal, operatic, folk, growl, recitative. These are just some of the styles she is master of. And she's quite likely to display several of them within a single verse. And this song will do nicely as a show opener - just an appetiser for what is to come.
Metal isn't all about growling, you know - even though Floor does, when needed.

Symphonic metal is too narrow a description for Nightwish. Their diversity is their strength. So if you are looking for a heavy song with growls try “Yours Is An Empty Hope” live from Mexico City. BTW it will Floor doing the growling!

Does she growl? Not on Thursdays, that's when she breaths :) She does growl in Nightwish, but not a lot. In Your's is an empty hope for example. And growling 10.0 during her time in Revamp

Ah, my favorite band. They're definitely active though on a break for a while, working on the 10th album. Too bad it's not your cup of tea but I appreciate an honest reaction instead of an audience pleaser. Will definitively check out some more of your videos.
If you're still interested in looking a little bit deeper:
Nightwish has a lot of diversity in their songs, ranging from folk to ballads, to heavy metal and progressive rock. The keyboardist writes most of the music and he is also in sideprojects called Auri (Folky, soft, atmosperic music) and Darkwoods my bethroted (full on Black metal) which kind of speaks for his broad musical interest.
One cool song with Floor full-on growling is 'Yours is an empty hope', may be worth checking out... She also did an Iron maiden (The evil that men do) cover once with her old band which is not the best quality instrumentally, but her performance and vocal always delivers. Their male vocalist/bassist is also particularly worth checking out, for example with their Pink Floyd cover of High Hopes. He left the band a year or so ago though, unfortunately.
Does she growl? Short answer, yes, but not very often in Nightwish as it's not their thing. She did quite a lot of growling in her previous band ReVamp where she had creative control and was the primary songwriter. Nightwish Army North Texas division reporting for duty. Welcome to the wonderful world of Floor Jansen and Nightwish. Symphonic metal at its best. This band has an incredible catalog of amazing music. It’s definitely a journey worth taking. The band is still together and currently recording their tenth album. Floor is about to give birth to her second child. This was Wacken Open Air festival in Germany, headlining the Saturday night show. They are definitely more popular in parts of Europe and South America, but that sheds more of a negative light on us in the US than anything. This is a great show opener, no doubt, but you really haven’t seen anything yet. You might check out Romanticide from this show or Yours is an Empty Hope from Wembley, which might fit in a little better.

Hello! cool reaction! How about another amazing band in this genre - Epica? Epica is somewhat heavier than Nightwish, they also have a vocalist with a gorgeous voice like a Disney princess and in contrast to her there is an extreme vocalist and together they sound in the so-called “beauty and the beast” style and it sounds very atmospheric and cool. This band, like Nightwish, is incredibly cool in live performances. If you haven't heard them yet, I highly recommend you start getting to know them. You can start with this video:

Not in France, Wacken concert is in Germany. This is the show opener, and the whole concert from 2013 is legendary.
People travel from all over the world to see them wherever they play, so lots of flags in the crowd.
Their virtual concerts in 2021 had 150,000 paid attendees from 108 countries.
They were touring their last 2020 album up to the end of June 2023, with a very pregnant lead singer, Floor, in the last few months.
Sadly, sounds like they are not your thing. Oh well.

Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also studied 2 years at the Conservatory (1 year Music Theatre and 1 year Opera). 'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song from full operatic to death growls in seconds. Here are some examples:

Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor joined Nightwish after this iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp’ also, but it was clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. Welcome to the world of Nightwish and symphonic metal. They really are a unique band; each song is different and beautiful. Floor's beautiful voice reaches your heart and soul. And yes, she growls, she sings pop, she sings opera... she's the complete package. They're still together with some lineup changes but still kicking ass. I hope you continue to explore their music. Nightwish has had three singers and this third singer Floor Jansen is the only one who can growl but virtually none of the nine albums has any growling as the lyrics and music are beyond the need for it. Floor has sung with various metal bands from the age of 16 and the first, After Foreve,r had a couple of male growling vocalists so she didn't need to. Second band, ReVamp, which she formed does feature her growling at various times on different songs particularly Mercy's No Crime but also Wild Card and Disdain. This is the show opener for 82,000 and the first time most of them heard Floor sing with Nightwish as only with them 10 months and mainly outside Europe and this is in Germany.

the symphonic sound is typically European and more successful there than in the US. All big bands are female fronted. Growls are untypical for Nightwish and only their third and current singer can handle them. With one exception, she only uses them selectively.

With great regret, I have to cancel my shows on the 6th and 8th of July. The reason is that my health is not good enough to responsibly perform the shows. I became exhausted after my last show with Nightwish in Finland. So much so that I collapsed and had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance. There, the doctors determined that my baby is healthy and I don't have any serious illnesses. However, I was so fatigued that continuing to work is no longer an option. The show with Nightwish in Oslo had to be canceled as a result of this. That was 3 weeks ago. I had hoped that I would be able to rebuild enough energy to still perform those wonderful solo shows in the Netherlands. But unfortunately, that's not the case. To ensure the health of both myself and my unborn baby, I need to rest and focus entirely on my recovery and the final phase of my pregnancy.
Canceling a show breaks my heart! It's a decision I definitely don't take lightly. But I hope to welcome you back to one of my shows in the near future! In good health. For now, I will temporarily bid farewell to the public stage and promise to take good care of myself and my little one.

This was the opener of this concert. Also Floor had been as lead vocalist only 10months at this point. Floor Jansen originally Dutch, moved to Finland because there the band is from. I'll put it this way - when you walk through a narrow alley all alone in the dark night and hear the growl of Floor ... then, my friend, you run for your life in fear.
Some of there 80's influences like Metallica, Van Halen, Pantera help in there style. Along with classical music. Check the song Your is an empty hope. Best watch is the 2015 Wembley Arena, the crowd is amazing, the quality and sounds pretty good and the camera's zoom in a lot during Floor's growls. If you are up for it, I recommend watching this whole concert (in Wacken, Germany btw) song by song . I would be surprised if you are disappointed. They have just finished their latest tour (I was at Prague and Athens - both amazing). New album due to be released 2024 (?).They may not tour that album - others can explain, but in part Floor will shortly give birth to her second child ❤. And as others are likely to confirm she can definitely ‘growl’, more so in her previous band , After Forever, but also see, Yours Is An Empty Hope (Nightwish). Can Floor Growl? Yours is an Empty Hope. And yes, live. Floor Jansen can sing like and angel, growl like a demon, and sing anything else in between. They were at the Wacken Open Air Festival in Germany. You have a Finnish band with a Dutch singer doing a song in English while in Germany. That's about as European as it gets, my guy. But they are amazing. Ghost River from the same concert might also catch your interest. Floor does growl, but it's easy to miss. Yours is an Empty Hope live at Wembly showcases her growl better. They are on hiatus from touring right now because Floor is having her second child, and the touring with the pregnancy was too much. Understandable.

got distracted and joined a series of bands. However, Floor still gathers souls by her grace, beauty and the sheer power

This was not in France. This was Wacken. Does she growel? 🤣 I guess you will have to explore Nightwish a little bit more....you will be amazed.

They're still together (though on a bit of a live break for the sake of Floor's (the singer's) health (just recovered from cancer, is pregnant and has fainted from exhaustion). She does occasionally growl, but more often than not it doesn't really fit the band's style. This band if one of my teen faves. Still follow them somewhat, and their old songs still get me fired up. Evergreens, some of them, and for me this is one of them.

Actually a Finnish band, with a Dutch singer, and UK multi instrumentalist as well. They were at the Wacken Metal Festival in Germany. People travel from as far as Brazil & North America to see them; and France, lol.
They just finished touring last album and are currently recording a new one. 😊
