  • Tomorrow Lab is a New York City-based invention studio that has developed and launched new physical technology products for clients like Google, P&G, Lyft, CitiBike, NatGeo, and Hasbro. Being a busy studio, they rarely get to work on their own-or their friend’s-potentially genius ideas. That’s about to change!
    In each episode, we watch as the Tomorrow Lab team sprint to make a potentially genius idea into a genius-or potentially genius-thing. Watch the team race against the clock to generate sketches, schematics, and prototypes while leveraging Digi-Key’s massive electronic component selection to inspire and help prototype!
    In this episode of the series, they work with Krystal Persaud, founder of Grouphug Solar, on a new solar-powered household device.

    Design a garden watcher, to scare off the squirrels before they steal fruits, or the rabbits before they steal the leaves.

    My thought is that instead of assuming everyone wants their blinds closed when it's sunny, why not have the solar panel also wirelessly charge a little remote that attaches to it and can control whether they are open or not.

      Great idea! Could definitely work. We opted for creating an automated device because humans are forgetful, busy, lazy, or sometimes just aren’t home to push the button!

      @General_Li_Shin Před 2 lety

      This really wouldn't work since the amount of energy you'd produce from a small solar panels is not gonna survive wireless charging, especially at any notable frequency, since the amount power it could transfer would significantly drop

      No, it’s a factor of the battery size and wattage. You can search for ‘wireless solar power bank’ to see many examples.

      @@theodoreullrich3588 So your saying the at higher frequencies you'd be able to actually transfer enough energy to wirelessly charge a remote anywhere in a room, by that I mean actually wireless and not tethered to a single location, cause you know losses and the fact that power transfer would be in the milliwatts.

    Lol, ideation... what a rediculous word!

    • @theodoreullrich3588
      @theodoreullrich3588 Před 2 lety +1

      Ideation is defined in the Oxford Dictionary as “the process of thinking or of having imagery or ideas.”
      Also, ‘ridiculous’ is spelled with two i’s.

    this is so pointless

      if you added IOT connectivity by just using an ESP32 or something instead, you could easily add the functionality of turning blinds when you leave the house with a bluetooth detection (ie is phone of owner in the house) or something similar when you leave. Or like they mentioned the wifi button which could trigger all the blinds in the house by the exit door. I think AC usage is one of the biggest greenhouse emitters for households, so this isn't as pointless as you think.

      @@gedr7664 yeah its not like all of those components are made in factories running on AC, drawing power from the grid, predominantly powered by thermal. Its pointless cause it serves no purpose, opening and closing blinds should not be some stupid automated process that basically consumes more power for no reason. Now the title was misleading as hell, Solar Powered Household device, to me suggests retrofitting a device at home to work off solar, slightly better than whatever the fuck that was.

    • @General_Li_Shin
      @General_Li_Shin Před 2 lety

      @@gedr7664 I hope people understand that adding a new pointless device to an ecosystem that doesn't need it is not eco friendly, even if it is solar. Similar issues with Wireless Charging, a new device being manufactured when it adds nothing to the space that isn't already there or is being done bette with consuming lesser power. This sort of stupid thinking leads to people like Elon Musk with his nonsensical ideas with no basis in reality or what the actual problem is and what actually has to be solved.

      @@General_Li_Shin thanks for your feedback.
      I wanted to address your argument, which is centered around an opinion of the device’s pointlessness. To be clear, the purpose of the device is to use solar energy to automate a small task that can lead to energy savings in a home or office with window mini blinds. It’s even a universal retrofit design to work with almost any existing mini blinds system. Same concept as turning off lights when not using them or changing your home thermostat a few degrees to reduce use of the HVAC system. In our opinion, giving people small solutions to solve big problems (even just a little) is not pointless.
      Your criticism that factories are big energy consumers is valid. However that isn’t the problem we are trying to tackle in this episode. And it doesn’t mean the output (the device) is pointless or wasteful as well. With the same logic, one could say food is pointless (not true) because the agricultural systems used to grow it are inefficient and wasteful (true).

    • @General_Li_Shin
      @General_Li_Shin Před 2 lety

      @@theodoreullrich3588 couldn't you just use your hands to close the blinds, automating every tiny thing is wasting energy, similarly with turning off lights but at the end of the day, and I say it's pointless cause it can be done with none of this solar nonsense. Now as for the food analogy, it makes no sense since all that food, if not wasted, is being used. the issue is this product does not do things any better. the other point I mention about retro fitting was not about small mundane stuff like a blind or turning off lights but more with retrofitting solar as a source into existing home electrical infra.
