  • On my winter cycling bike I have Schwalbe Marathon Winter tires (tyres). They are 35mm wide and I pair them with 45mm wide fenders (mudguards). I use 60 psi air pressure in these tires (4 bar), but may go less.
My tires are rated from 35 psi to 85 psi (2.5 bar to 5.5 bar), which is a huge range. Lower pressure is better for grip on uneven surfaces and when turning on ice if you got spikes on the sides of your studded tires like I do. Lower pressure is better for comfort too. Higher pressure is better for less rolling resistance (you'll speed up faster). Higher pressure is better for preventing flat tires too.
There is no perfect winter tire... as conditions change on the road or the multi use path, the best tire for that condition changes. Riding conditions can change within hours.
Generally, fat tires are good for snow and studded tires are good for ice. Usually you don't have snow without some ice. Skinny tires can cut through snow but I'm not aware of any available that come in the studded tire variety.
I've read some people ride with a studded tire on the front wheel only, but I don't recommend it because, two are better than one! LOL
    More winter cycling tips:
Studded tires (ice), fenders (water), and disc brakes (reliable).
The main streets should be rideable if at least partially plowed, if not, using a car won't be any easier.
A fat bike can help float over some types of snow.
Go slow and know your limits.
Keep your weight centered and/or on the saddle.
    Ride in straight lines.
Prepare for a longer commute time.
    Wear lots of clothing layers.
Have a phone handy in case you run into trouble.
Always check your brakes and don't use them fast and hard.
Less air in your tires will provide better traction.
Keep your bike clean as best you can. A quick rinse, dry, and lube is good.
Thanks for watching! And please subscribe!

I've got a 22km round trip commute in the High Peaks region of the Adirondacks and LOVE my Schwalbe Marathon Winter tires; 35mm like you. Because of the amount of salt used to treat the roads during winter here I'm having to wash my bike constantly, which is why I ride a pretty cheap Specialized "fitness" bike. But those tires have been a game-changer. You are so right about riding the the snow! It's so peaceful and I'm fortunate to have some back roads where there are hardly ever any cars so the night-time ride back is almost like being in a dream.

Same here. My Schwalbe's made winter so fun. Nice studded tires and I easily outpaced cars. Surprisingly, I only fell a single time all winter and never had as much fun. Can't wait for winter to come back so I can finally go on my daily commute in snow.

You don't need specific tires as long as your city plows and de-ices your streets. Just go slower and try to ride in a straight line if you hit a dangerous patch. Ice is bad and I've fallen multiple times because of it.

Smooth ride! My winter commuting (Norway) has a 90 % success rate, so i added knee protection. Ice is hard, but add some sand on top of it, and you'll feel it. - For two weeks...
Using an e-bike at the moment, which are just plain crazy on ice. Here the ice is not smooth and even, but more shaped like a moon landscape. A few km and there is no feeling my arms. But it is sick fun.

That is the tires I have on my Trek FX6 which I had since last winter. Learning what it's like last winter, same rules applied when snow finally got here. The typical, still got to be careful of ICE, nothing will stick to that, I'm talking the smooth shinny type. Also when the snow gets packed hard the grooves are hard to negotiate..it's best to ride in the street when the snow is as it was today and a couple days ago which is about 3" of frozen slush and powdery snow. I'm a bike riding addict so I enjoyed it, my feet didn't start to get cold until my hour and a half ride was over. Wear the typical winter layers of clothes, coats, gloves, socks and insulated boots. The temperature was very cold both today (5ºF but sunny) and upper (28ºF but with gusting winds) two days ago. The cold weather was not one bit distracting or un-comfortable, what was is the un-melted snow in the streets, the grooves, mix of icy slush and having less pavement to let cars go past. I did try going over paved bike paths, some portions were o.k for a mile or two, none of them had been plowed but mainly it was too difficult so I stayed on the side streets. As for un-paved trails I tried a short 1/4 mile, it was hard to ride thru and this would depend on how much and what type of snow build up you have.

Update: Schwalbe just came out with a new 2019 model, the Marathon Winter PLUS. Instead of kevlar guard they now have smartguard, a thick layer of rubber to prevent punctures.
After 4 winters, I've gotten a lot of flats using the Marathon Winter tires. During warmer weather I switch to Marathon Plus road tires and they almost never get flats. So I'm expecting the same results with the Marathon Winter Plus. :)

    My experience, without studded tires:
-snow is fairly easy, especially "crunchy" snow
-a good, wide front tire is a must (tire ruts, refrozen boot tracks)
-a wide back tire works well; a worn back tire works better on ice
Snow over ice isn't too bad. In all cases, rude easy. Don't accelerate off of an ice patch, don't turn of brake on an ice patch.
Obviously, the studded tire is going to be a ton better; if you're facing patchy ice, though, you can conquer it with patience and care.....but you WILL fall, sooner or later.

Riding on snow and ice is more fun when it's a bit colder (like -10C and below). Much, much better grip and way easier to go fast(er). I pump my tires up about halfway, and then a little bit, between the recommended min. and max pressure. That's because I keep my studded tires on throughout the winter regardless of road condition. The Marathons are also a chore on pavement/asphalt, in my opinion, and that's another reason why I keep the pressure up.

If you haven't tried them, check out the Specialized Expedition tires, no studs but when I was a bike messenger in Toronto during the mid 80's I could stand on my pedal on a slippery road and it grabbed and lurched forward before I hit that half revolution! Amazing tires for winter riding, now I have Vittoria Corsa tires rated 4 season (via Ali Express for much less and no tax) But that expedition tire blew me a way, and i made more money as a result. I still ride my 1986 Miyata, but I drop the pressure to 120-125 psi in the winter from 145psi. @ 700x23mm Cuts right through the snow like the old Wilies Jeeps did in the mud. I used to use 19mm Vittoria's but they don't have those anymore, even a good 20mm is hard to find.

I'd recommend springing for the better 4 row or 240 studs tire though unless they are just for occasional bare minimum snow and ice action. The Marathons profile tends to be a little too rounded for really good grip unless the PSI is relatively low. Get the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 700x40 240 Steel Studs if ya want some serious bite for climbing and also for descending swiftly with confidence. Fatter 26 inch tires have more options but the Hakkapeliitta is a serious performance tire that will fit cross and gravel bikes.

Do you have the double row or quad row of studs? Maybe they don't come quad row in 35mm, but quad rows are far superior since they have at least one stud on each side of the tire in contact at any one time so you won't get nearly as many of those little lateral slips. I've ridden both and it's pretty easy to get used to the little slips because that's all they ever amount to but two rows on each side are extremely confidence-inspiring! As you say, the extra row also helps in cornering but the effect is not as dramatic as having the right air pressure to engage all four rows on straightaways that may be considerably more rutted than what you encountered.

    My journey was 15km in -18 c, feel like -22 C.

Absolutely love this video. I live in Canada as well. First time cycling in my life. Never bought a bike. I went to the store and the lady there said I would need a hybrid bike to use one for both winter and summer . But if Im correct, you're riding a road bike in the snow right ?
Any tips/advice for a first time buyer who's just getting into cycling on what kind of bike to get to use for exercise year round to ride on roads only ? Hybrid or road bike.
    Thanks

Hey, I know it's late but road bikes generally have less tire clearance, meaning you won't be able to fit wider tires which you would need for offroad or winter time. Hybrid bikes have better clearance, you could also look into gravel bikes, they are the best in offroad/winter and onroad.

The light in this video is a Strada MK6 by USE. It has a cutoff, although I still aim it slightly downward to be courteous.

How far do you commute? I go 15.5 miles each way and it usually takes 65-80 minutes each way. I don't bother with eating anything on commutes. I only take food if I know I'll be out riding for 2 hours or more. But otherwise I do usually keep a gel in my trunk bag just in case.

Get some ski goggles man, no issues with fogging even with the balaclava fully on. As for studs they don't have any affect on a 3 inch thick melting ice pack with 33mm tires. The problem there is breaking down into it and getting knocked around (imagine dropping a tire into a train track). My mountain bike with 2.3" knobby tires is far better suited. Our roads are covered with so much snow and ice for so long that I've just never understood the benefit of studs for our conditions. I run about 15-19psi in my mountain bike tires and just take things really easy. We've been on snow and ice all winter here in Idaho and I haven't had an issue. (usually haha). When the weather clears up I'll use the cyclocross bike again but right now the mountain bike just works much better.

I have a vented balaclava and even with a ski mask it still fogs up.

Perhaps you have the wrong goggles? I have a $15 pair of Boelle goggles from Amazon with a vented Columbia balaclava. I have never had any fogging from -5F to 35F so far this winter. The only time there is any fog is when I come inside my house where they temp is about 70.

Dunno, I got a $30 ski mask from Sportsman's Warehouse and also a nice vented balaclava from the same place. But I think the foam around the ski mask still leaves slight openings at the top edge of the balaclava, on either side of my nose.

It's hard to know exactly why but clearly some setups do it and some dont.

+Chris Babb This the advantage of having at least a fatter tire up front - to plow away the snow.

That's the way to go! Studdes tires are must in those conditions. Some people still ride without them, even here in Finland! I would not.

Hi Bike Blogger, live in Finland now and cold weather is ahead. I have a 26" wheel Scott YZ v brake and a 28" Crescent hybrid disc brake. Which would you suggest is better for icy roads? The biggest issue here is tyre tramlining with the sidewall hitting hard edges left on the road by road traffic. Would it in your view be better to opt for the biggest volume tyre possible and go low with pressure? Also what is recommended stud-count? Thanks & keep safe!

    • @BikeBlogger
      @BikeBlogger  Před 6 lety

Hi Alex Lintern. The best bike tires depend on the snow consistency, which changes often as it melts and freezes and cars change the landscape. Studs are good for ice not snow but if the snow depth is quite shallow they should be able to bite through to the ice. Carbide studs last longer than steel type. I like to use tires with many studs like 200, but stud placement is more important - you want some closer to the sides of the tire for better control on turns. Lower tire pressures is always a good idea for dangerous conditions like wet roads, so I would get the larger tires your bike frame can handle so you can run lower pressures. Winter cycling in icy or snowy conditions isn't a race but it is a rewarding achievement.

    • @AndrewMalcolmson
      @AndrewMalcolmson Před 6 lety

To get out of icy ruts you want a tire with studs along the edge as well as in the centre.
