I've started adding links to the tools and supplies I use and can locate into the description of all my videos. Full disclosure, purchasing anything through those links helps earn this channel a bit of money as I try and make this more and more of my focus.
Your channel is the first I've found that doesn't do Western flower designs. Your work is more my speed. Great stuff and great advice.
Keep it up and thanks!
Glad you enjoy it. More videos when film work calms down.
Weaver Leather Supply has the best prices on Angelus paints, $4.50 a 1 oz bottle (some basic colors are $3.90) and the Matte Acrylic Finisher is $5.50 for a 4 oz bottle.
I use the Tandy Eco Sheen for a resist and it works for the Pro Dye and the Kiwi shoe products I use instead of antique when l paint on leather.
When I first started with leather, I used Kiwi shoe products and I still use three kinds for small projects like sheaths for my knives, which is why I started leather work in the first place. The liquid shoe shine was the strongest and worked like dye except it was shiny. and I don't use it anymore, l use the Fiebings Pro dye, but the Kiwi Shine and Nourish Cream does the same thing as antique does. Then I will seal a sheath with the Kiwi brown shoe wax in the flat can and melt it in with a small torch and buff off with a rag and shine brush. It doesn't rub off and waterproofs the surface. If I want the belt or sheath to really shine I use Kiwi's Color Shine which comes in Black, Brown and Neutral. l used to live nowhere near any leather supply, but l could buy the Kiwi products at any shoe store or even Walmart. I've found through experimenting that some of Kiwi's products are just as useful as the "professional" finishes.
Your recommendation for the dye pens in a previous video was a huge help. It's amazing how much control they afford. Thanks!
Glad I was able to help out.
Keep them coming man Iâm just getting into LW myself and your videos are great!
Love your videos! They are cool to watch and the product recommendations have been a huge help!
That's awesome to hear. I'm still kind of finding my way on CZcams, trying to see what people would find the most useful.
Love your tutorials. Very informative.
Man you explain way better than any others keep doing what you're doing man I really love these videos
This was impressive. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for the video.
The howling in the background freaked me out!! Haha we live in wolf country and I was like shit... is there a wolf or coyote in my yard again?
Sir, I just discovered your channel, and have been binge watching your videos. I have learned so much about leather carving. I used to make belts a long time ago, and have been thinking of doing some again. Thank you for sharing your craftsmanship and expertise.
Glad you're enjoying them. :)
Looks great! I just never caught in the video what your alternative Resist is. I see Eco Sheen in the comments. How about Super Sheen or Block Out by Tandy?
I just found your channel while looking for inspiration to rebuild my kit after 15 wars and a house fire. Iâm really digging it. I love the artwork on this piece, but I canât seem to find it in your Etsy store. Is it available anywhere?
Hi just curious what colour and brand dye have you used on the main part of the leather. It's a lovely colour
I know there's more than a few leatherworkers out there that can chime in on this topic. Give us your favorite resists and why.
What sprayer do you use? Your work is amazing!
It varies but I generally try and find a small metal paint sprayer at my local hardware store.
Love your videos! Do you use oil or alcohol based dyes? Your designs are amazing!
Thanks! So Fiebings Pro Dye, formerly Fiebings Oil Dye, is still an alcohol based dye, but it contains a bit of oil. So you can thin it in a similair fashion to the regular alcohol dyes. I find that the Pro Dye has a more even color, but I've started using an air brush and paint gun a fair bit recently so I can obtain a fairly even color with either type.
That said, it's been mostly Pro Dye of late.
The difference between the regular dye and the Pro dye is the regular uses a powdered pigment and the Pro uses an oil pigment and both use an alcohol base. I only ever use the black regular dye and I thin it out.
What color of the antique did you use? I was looking at the eco Flo gel antique and there's multiple colors that are offered. Was wondering which one would be best not to desaturate the acrylic colors when you wipe it over the carving. I'm just worried I'll have everything looking good then go to antique and then the antique color I choose makes everything look muddy or the colors too brown.
I usually use a medium or dark brown. Apply a couple of layers of resist and let it dry completely. I usually rush it and antique it too early.
Thanks for the reply!! I'm making leather journal covers for my friends D&D notebooks so I'm looking for all the help I can get.
Hey! I broke out my grandpa's leather kit and a bit of the leather, and I cant seem to get deeper designs and smooth slants using smooth stamp thing. Im not very well versed in leather but I have always wanted to do it. I wet the leather and let it soak in. Used the swivel knife to do the cuts, but I cant deep get slants. Ive watched a few of your videos and they've inspired me to start but I'm feeling a little defeated.
Any tips that anyone can give are greatly appreciated!
Are you doing the carving on vegetan leather? How old is the leather? And how long do you let it sit after wetting it thoroughly?
Its about 2 months old and it is vegetan leather. I only have scrap pieces that I got from the leather store. I let it soak for about 2-3 minutes but by that point I noticed it started to lighten a bunch and it wasn't soaked. I have 2 thicknesses of leather and one is about 2-3 mm thick and the other is slightly thinner.
Take a sponge and put some water on it, then leave it for 10m and try to stamp it or carve it again. Don't sooooak it. Then try it again once it dries more, experiment a bit.
Okay cool thanks! Ill have to get a sponge because I have been spooning it on with my hand haha
Or a paper towel or cloth.
I have a Question : how many ozs should the leather be to start carving it, and what would be the hardest to carve? Thanks, I enjoy your videos.
You can carve any oz but heavier is easier and allows for more depth. 8oz is a great start.
@@DarkHorseWorkshop thank you so much đ
Call me dense but what does the resist actually do considering you cover the whole project with it?
I'm curious how the paint holds up over time?
Acrylic paint formulated for leather has no problem holding up over time. It can fleck away like any paint, but it's not going to disappoint.
Pretty much this.
