a story about why hot caramel exploded in my face. We shot this video for 5 days. And one day I left the caramel pot in the refrigerator. the next day I set the caramel to heat up to the maximum power of the stove. from below, the caramel began to burn and smoke, and on top there was still a cold hard layer of caramel. it began to crack and as soon as I turned to see what was cracking there, it exploded. whole.

Hot caramelized sugar isn’t like boiling water. It doesn’t cool down instantly. It acts a lot like a chemical weapon and it will keep burning the skin once it’s on it. While a speck or droplet is common, a whole explosion would definitely warrant a hospital visit. But if this guy doesn’t have scars or visible burn marks on his face after he recovers I’d be genuinely surprised. An accident like that and somehow getting past it without scarring is a miraculous feat.
